Supergirl

Supergirl is a comic book character that first appeared in Action Comics #252

Among the many incarnations of Supergirl, the most prominent and current "Girl of Steel" is Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin and last survivor of Kryptons' Argo City.

Supergirl Origins

DC Comics tested three different female versions of Superman prior to Kara-Zor-El's debut as the official Supergirl .

Lois Lane (Action Comics  #60)

A hospitalized Lois Lane dreams she has gained superpowers while Superman gives her a blood transfusion to save her life. She begins her own career as "Superwoman"

Claire Kent (Superboy #8)

Superboy (Clark Kent) saves the life of Shar-La, an alien woman who turns Superboy into a girl in retaliation for his thoughts about women drivers which she picked up telepathically.

Supergirl (Superman #123)

Jimmy Olsen wishes upon a magic totem for a "Supergirl" to be Superman's sidekick.

Kara Zor-El (Silver Age)

When Krypton exploded a large chunk of the planet was hurled away from the planet, shielded from the explosion and space under a dome. There were several hundred survivors of Krypton, one of these was names Zor-El, Jor-El’s brother. Unfortunately due to the explosion that destroyed krypton, the large chunk of the planet they were living on was slowly turning into Kryptonite. With help from fellow scientists, Zor-El constructed sheets of lead to cover the ground until such time as they could evacuate the planet. Several years passed while the survivors and descendants of Krypton lived in peace, life settled down for them. The survivors moved on with their lives, becoming scientists, explorers, but none actually left the city or its protective dome. Some years later Zor-El fell in love, he married and eventually had a child, Kara. When Kara was in her early teens disaster struck again. A meteor shower bombarded the survivors of krypton, destroying the dome and puncturing the lead shielding that was protecting them from Kryptonite poisoning.

Desperately, Zor-El raced against time to construct a rocket in his lab, a rocket to send his only daughter to safety. While Zor-el worked on the rocket his wife started looking for a suitable planet to send young Kara to. Eventually they found a planet where there was a man with amazing powers, Superman. Using their Super-Space Telescope and Space Radio they learned about superman’s history and that he was a survivor of Krypton as well. Deciding they had found a safe place to send their daughter, Zor-El finished the rocket while his Wife made a copy of Superman’s suit out of their native ‘indestructible Super-Cloth’. Barely in time Kara was placed in the rocket and launched towards earth, her mother and father, her entire race now dead, aside from Kal-El, Superman. Arriving on Earth, Kara told her tale to Superman who explained to her that he was launched into space by his father too; Jor-El. Hearing the name Kara announced that her father was Zor-El, Jor-El’s brother. As Kara's newly found cousin, Superman promised to take care of her like a big brother. Kara immediately asked if she could come and live with him, a problem for Superman as he had adopted a secret identity of earth, one Supergirl might jeopardize, even unintentionally. Testing her powers for the first time Superman and the newly christened Supergirl. Agreeing to keep her presence on earth a secret for the time, Kara lived as Linda Lee Danvers living at the Midvale orphanage while attending Stanhope Collage where she majored in astrology. At night, Linda operated in secret as Supergirl, often using her powers to help others. On her first night out, she fought invading "Rancors" who kidnapped the worlds greatest scientists.

Death of Supergirl

Supergirl is dead on the famous cover of Crisis on Infinite Earths #7
Supergirl is dead on the famous cover of Crisis on Infinite Earths #7
Despite Supergirl’s continued popularity and status as a central member of the "Superman Family", it was determined by the editors at DC Comics and the creators of the maxi-series that Supergirl would die during the Crisis. As Superman was about to be killed, Kara stepped in and sacrificed herself for her cousin. It would later be revealed that Supergirl was "warned" ahead of time about her death. The universe was rebooted, time had been altered and Kara was erased from existence.

Paul Levitz who was writing the 'Legion of Superheroes' title at the time made a last attempt to save Kara Zor-El with his 'Who is Sensor Girl?' story arc. The reader as well as some characters believed her to be Supergirl. In fact she was Supergirl until DC denied Levitz the character. Sensor Girl became Projectra and the Supergirl clues became a red herring.

However this did not stop characters claiming to be Kara returning. In Christmas with the Superheroes Kara returned to stop Deadman from stealing people's holidays. She reminded him that they do not become heroes for glory but because it must be done even if no one remembers that you even exist. The story was dedicated to Otto Binder and Jim Mooney with the words 'We still remember'.

A character claiming to be Kara also appeared in the Linda Danvers run of the Supergirl title. She appeared to be a  spirit of fire but while calling herself Kara it was not conclusive that it was Kara Zor-El. Kara did undeniably appear in the volume in 'Many Happy Returns'.

Supergirl (1987-2003)

Following Kara Zor-El's death, several characters unrelated to Superman soon took on the Supergirl persona.

Supergirl Returns
In an effort to revitalize the Supergirl series (starring Linda), Kara Zor-El returned in the "Many Happy Returns" graphic novel in 2003. In this story Kara's ship crash lands on the wrong earth and Linda must take care of the teenage Kara. Kara's personality is that of how she was written in her early appearances in the 1950's. This arc was a success in that the readers wanted Kara to return more than ever. This leads to her debut in Superman/Batman #8 and the relaunch of the Supergirl series in 2004.

Modern Age Kara Zor-El

Like the pre-Crisis version, this Kara claims to be the daughter of Superman's uncle Zor-El and his wife Alura. The new Kara is actually older than Superman; she was a teenager when he was a baby. When Krypton exploded, she was sent in a rocket (in suspended animation) to find and look after Superman. However, her rocket got caught in a huge chunk of the planet and she arrived on Earth years after her cousin did. Meanwhile, she was put in suspended animation, so while chronologically born before Kal-El, she is still the age of a teenager. Her arrival is discovered by Batman, who initially doubted that she was really Kryptonian, thinking that it was too much of a coincidence. Not to mention he couldn't understand a thing that she said because she only spoke in Kryptonion. Kara is scared being on a unfamiliar world, and unable to understand English, not knowing about the powers she gets from being on earth does some damage. Batman subdues her using kryptonite and brings her to the batcave to conduct more research on her but she soon awakens attempts to fly off  but is prevented from doing so by Superman.  Discovered by her cousin she spends a long time at the Fortress of Solitude catching up on all the time she has missed and learning about earth and its past. She is astonishingly able to learn all of earths languages in just three months. During her stay at the fotress Kara does not get along with Krypto, Supermans dog which makes Batman suspicios of her.
She become restless and pleads to go out into the world, and Superman finally allows her to as long as she stays under his supervision (no pun intended). He takes her to the Kent Farm were she spends a short time learning to control and hide her powers to appear more human. The Amazons learn of her existence and Wonder Women comes to take Kara back to their island to be properly trained in combat by Wonder Woman and Artemis. Superman is reluctant to let her go, but grudgingly concedes, seeing it would benefit her and she would be safe. Unfortunately she doesn't stay safe. She is captured by Darkseid, and after being brainwashed, attacked her own cousin.

Superman defeats her and returns her to Earth, where he fakes her death so Darkseid will not come looking for her. She then assumes the role of Supergirl. But she feels out of place, not sure where she really belongs. At the start of Kara's career as Supergirl she joins the Justice Society in a fight with Grundy but actually just watches from a distance as she talks to Star Girl who assures her they can handle it. During the battle Power Girl arrives to help the Justice Society but finds herself loosing Kara to him much to her surprise which leads Kara to save her. Kara is unable to associate closely with Power Girl because their powers go out of control when they touch each other. Kara has also been feeling out of place because she does not know where she should belong. Because of this she finds most solace with the Amazons on Themyscira. She finds kindred spirits in her other "cousin" Superboy, Wonder Girl, and Starfire.

Supergirl is invited by Starfire to join the Outsiders in which she accepts and develops a heavy crush on Nightwing.
The Evil Kara is revealed
The Evil Kara is revealed
Her self-discovery is interrupted when Lex Luthor attacks her and after severely beating her using his newly developed armour uses a black kryptonite to split her into a good Kara and an evil Kara. The evil Kara states that she was sent to Earth by Zor-El for the sole purpose of killing the infant Kal-El. Zor-El had devised a special crystal that would influence her personality as she traveled to Earth, making her "innocent", thus creating the good side of Kara's personality. However, the good side became dominant. Upon the release of the evil Kara , Lex attempts to persuade her to join him but she refuses and begins to severely beat him causing Lex to flee with the evil Kara in persuit. The good Kara is awaken later by Starfire and quickly chases after her evil self who she finds is at the Justice League Watch tower. Supergirl prevents her evil form from snapping the Martian Manhunters neck and gives the rest of the League time to pull together. This leads to the evil Kara to fly back to earth and Supergirl reveals her location through Jónn who she hoped read her mind. Supergirl faces off her against her evil self in Gotham City and during the battle their clothes are switches leaving Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman unable to tell who the real Kara is. At the climax of the struggle between the two Karas and the Justice League, the good Kara urges Wonder Woman to use her golden lasso of truth to bind the two together and ask: "Who is Kara Zor-El?" The two Karas fuse back into a single good Kara, who decides her past is not important and acknowledges Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman as her foster parents.

Supergirl in Infinite Crisis

During the Infinite Crisis, Supergirl joins the heroes that Donna Troy has recruited to operate in deep space during the crisis. However, Kara's return from deep space is disrupted by the zeta-beam malfunction which hits Donna's space team. While some incur grievous physical injuries and deformities ( Adam Strange loses his eyes; Hawkgirl grows to enormous size), Supergirl simply disappeared. It was revealed that prior to the crisis, it was because of Superman Prime's reality-altering ripple effect, which brought Kara Zor-El back to existence. Kara finds herself in the 31st century and she eventually thought that the 31st century was a dream she had created.

Saturn Girl scans her mind to find out what has happened to her and sees glimpse of the zeta-beam. The Legion hypothesized that due to her suspended animation and all the trauma she has gone through that she has made herself believe that the 31st century is a dream. Another complicated matter is that whenever Kara wants something, she automatically gets it. For example, she could not be an official member of the Legion of Superheroes but when she said she wanted a flight ring, Brainiac 5 sends a ring to her.

Her supposed dream world was shattered and in shambles when the very same Brainiac, concerned about the effects of a super powered being like her slipping in madness, exposed her to green Kryptonite, sedated her and left in care of Kandorian scientists in the enlarged Rokin / New Krypton Kandor City to be "re-educated" on the uses of the last Kryptonians (with even language changed in a thousand years, Kara couldn't even be an effective member of Rokin society, thus making her an outcast again), and her "romance" with Cosmic Boy was dismissed as the side-effect of the residual zeta-beam radiation affecting the young boy's body chemistry.

One Year Later

One Year after Infinite Crisis, Supergirl returns to the 21st century, and assumes the identity of Flamebird to fight crime in Kandor with Power Girl as Nightwing. They opposed a religious cult based around warped versions of Superman's earlier

appearances in Kandor. Kara also believes the key to Argo City, her home town, lies somewhere in the city. Kara and Power Girl find themselves battling the Saturn Queen and Ultraman (posing as Superman), villains who have established themselves in Kandor. At the climax of the struggle, Supergirl unexpectedly leaves (with her comrade in tow). Since she did not consult with Power Girl about the timing of their exit, the two part on somewhat strained terms. Kara re-establishes herself on Earth, attaining financial independence after selling an item of Kryptonian technology that would completely "heal" anybody who uses it to Batman for his own personal use, at the price of one million dollars. With this money Kara has purchased her own apartment.

Back on Earth, Kara visits the Kents to mourn the lost of Conner with them. There, Kara decided to take one of Conner's "S" black shirt. She would later give the shirt to Cassie, who was still mourning for Conner. Cassie and Kara begins to develop a close friendship. Kara also befriended Captain Boomerang, who obviously wants to date Kara, but she only thinks of him as a brother. Kara was also tired of the "hero" thing and living in Superman's shadow, she tries to begin a normal life.

She enrolls in a high school under the alias Claire Conners. Kara used a wig and glasses to hide her identity and attempts to make friends. However, she was considered an outsider and girls would eventually play pranks on her. Kara would drop out after a week when some girls humiliated her in front of a crowd. With the help of Captain Boomerang, he got the Outsiders to let Supergirl try out for the team again. On their first mission, the Outsiders got irritated at her for using lethal force on the criminals. Eventually Kara would also get irritated and decided not to join the Outsiders.
Batgirl vs Supergirl

She later began dating Power Boy who had saved her, and also begun having nightmares about her father doing some kind of experiment on her. Meanwhile an unknown person has hired the League of Assasins to eliminate Kara and leading the League during the time was former Batgirl Cassandra Cain who is sure she can get the job done.  When Supergirl fought against Batgirl, Kara is led into a trap being exposed to red light radiation and kryptonite dust that stings her eyes giving Batgirl the advantage and after being cut and stabbed by a run sun sword, something her father did healed all her wounds causes crystals to sprout from her body and ends up seriously wounding Batgirl. Kara later accompanied Green Lantern Hal Jordan on a mission to another planet. During the mission, Kara flirts with Hal multiple times, forcing him to remind himself that she is only 17 years old. Back on Earth, Kara begins spending more time with Power Boy. However, when Kara decided to blow off one of their dates to visit Owen Mercer at the hospital, it irritated Power Boy. After she begins to leave, Power Boy stops her and forces her into a fight. He knocks her out and when she awakens Power Boy reveals he has a huge obsession with Supergirl since first seeing her at Darkseids side back on Apocolypse.

Supergirl breaks up with Power Boy
Supergirl breaks up with Power Boy
The two fight and eventually Supergirl knocks him out of where she is being held. Power Boy pleads with Kara not to get angry as he does not want to hurt her but Kara crushes him using a huge rock. Power Boy teleports away from the battle using his father box. Kara cathes up with him using her super speed and kness him in the groin. To prevent him from teleporting again Kara crushes his Fatherbox which upon being broken begins to make a sound as if its about detonate.
Kara attempts to throw the Fatherbox into the sun but was not fast and a huge explosion happens resulting in a bright light.  Later, Kara begins having more visions of her father. Eventually, her father would reveal that the Phantom Zone had possessing demons that escapes when it is used. Zor-El also discovered a way to destroy it by implanting a sun stone in it. He implanted one in Kara to make her immune to them. Zor-El then shows her that they were sentenced to exile in the Phantom Zone by the Kryptonian Council. Kara then sees a memory when her Kryptonian classmates were possessed and attacking them at their home. Shortly after, Krypton's destruction occurred.

Kara then wakes up and flies back to Earth to discover the Phantom demons possessing people. Kara was attacked by Wonder Girl who forced her to reveal her dark secrets and released her when she was disgusted with her. She soon goes to the Batcave in an attempt to get help from Batman, but found him possessed and he had sealed himself in the cave. She is soon confronted by Robin who forces her to stab him with a sun stone, but instead of killing him it released the Phantom from his body.

Robin had been keeping track of Superman who has been using a batsuit that Batman gave him since the sun became red and he lost his powers. With Robin's help she was able to locate Superman and found that Phantoms were coming
from his body. Kara admits everything to her cousin, however Clark was driven mad by the Phantoms and he wanted Kara to kill him and save Earth. However the pre-crisis Supergirl showed up taunting her and calling her imperfect and inadequate. However it was revealed that everything that had happened including Batgirl's attack was all an illusion created by Dark Angel who was acting as the pre-crisis Supergirl. Dark Angel had become obsessed with the idea that Supergirl was a threat to the Multiverse. However a Monitor appears informing Kara that she is this universes Supergirl and he was sorry for all that Dark Angel had done. Supergirl is left in deep space where she meets Pariah who tells her about a "Great Disaster" that will be caused by her and she goes to Earth to patch up all the mistakes she made on Earth recently.

Kara first apoligizes too Captain Boomerang for leading him on to which he replies that she has nothing to apologize for and clearly forgives her. Kara then apoligizes to Grace for letting her get seriously wounded in battle because Kara had failed to act.  Grace agrees on the condition that she gets one free punch to which Kara allows only for Grace to end up hurting her hand again. Kara locates Power Girl who is still angry with her for being selfish and abandoning the citizens of Kandor for her own personal needs. Realizing that Karen needs more time Super girl finally apologizes to Superman to which they go off together to have a friendly race.

Amazons Attack

All the women who had any connection to the Amazons were being contained in internment camps. Wonder Girl and Supergirl attack the camp in an attempt to free their friends and family, but Robin informs that it would be better to use negotiation. The two then travel to talk to Queen Hippolyta. Hippolyta tells them that they need to bring the President to her to talk. The girls block Air Force One's path and convinced the President to go with the, but the plane is brought down by two Amazons. The two realize their foolishness and are helped by Superman who helps them with the Amazons.

Teen Titans

After the Amazons retreat, Supergirl is given membership into the Teen Titans. During her time on the team she attends Bart Allen funeral and is also present during the private wake held at Titans Tower. Kara helps to reveal using her x-ray vison  to Robin and Wondergirl that the arrival of Kid Flash in the tower is actually Miss Martian who unfamliar with human customs tries to cheer them up. On one of her first missions with the Titans she helps them battle Lobo. She also battles against a clone of Superman(who at that time, was a clone of Kon-El/Conner Kent/Superboy)from the Titans Tomorrow storyline. The Titans of tomorrow have once again returned to help the prsent day titans battle Starro as if the outcome of the battle with Starro will heavily effect the future. Kara is left to tag with Wondergirl in fighting a mind controlled Brimstone while the the future Connor and Cassie supersive them much to their dismay.
Kara leaves the Teen Titans because of Wonder Girl.
Kara leaves the Teen Titans because of Wonder Girl.
During the battle Kara is blasted by Brimstone and is sent away from the battle field. She lands in the woods only to be confronted by an enemy also possesd by Starro who uses magic against her and leaves her tied up in vines. She overcomes this problem with the help of the future Connor who tells her to leave Cassie alone. Kara flies back just in time to help Cassie defeat Brimstone.  Kara leaves the Titans shortly after she and Wonder Girl get into a fight. Wonder Girl claims she wanted Kara's friendship because she reminded her of her former boyfriend Kon-El with the intention of getting Kara to leave the team. The desicion was made by Cassie without consulting the rest of the team but Supergirl flies away hurt at her supposed best friends actions.

Kal-El tries to help earth and Krypton get used to one another but, the Kryptonians don't like the idea, including Zor-el and Alura, Kara's parents. The president of the United States and a Delegate from Krypton, agreed to meet at a televised event however it was interrupted by doomsday,Zor El and Alura, formed a group to find all enemies of Superman, who would cause a threat to Krypton, and toss them into the Phantom Zone. This failed because it ended the lives of Human Police officers, when Zor-El and Alura refused to hand over Parasite. Brainaic unleashes his army onto Kandor, all the while Metallo and Reactron  enter the city containing Kryptonite, and kill Zor-el.

This enraged Alura whom denouces all humanity, her scientist have found away to pick up Kandor and grow a new planet underneath it, they moved towards the other side of the sun, shut off from earth. She tells Superman he is not welcomed on "New Krypton" and she releases General Zod to lead her people. Kara is trying to find out the mystery of this mysterious "Superwoman". When the two first met it was on rather good terms, however after the death of Zor-El Kara headed for earth and was halted by Superwoman. She claimed she was trying to help Kara but when Kara insisted on going she punched her.

Kara faked going with Superwoman and punched her back, afterwards a battle ensued, which saw Kara plummeting into a ocean. Kara returned to earth and was found by Reactron, his mission was to kill her, he stole her power with his Gold Kryptonite, but Kara remembered her training with Batman, she used her resources to beat him. After putting two and two togather, Kara found Super-woman and attacked her, upon on masking her she found out that she was Major Lane, Lois Lane's younger sister, the fight that follows between them shows Kara ripping Lane's uniform and her body apparently contorting and exploding, apparently killing her. Later on, she tells Lois Lane about everything that happened with Superwoman and Lois doesn't like what she hears and tells Kara to leave. She later talks to Lana Lang about Lucy Lane and feels better about herself after all the bad things that had been happening and tells Lana she can call her Linda. She then leaves to New Krypton happily deciding she'll tell her mother everything about Superwoman and also to tell her she's a big girl and can take care of herself now.

Supergirl's Powers

The modern age Kara Zor-El's power is extremely powerful. Many others, including Kara, believe that she is stronger then Superman himself. However, Superman explained that he holds back his powers so he does not hurt people, while Kara has no experience and does not care about the collateral damages as much. While Kara was in suspended animation, her rocket ship had a yellow sun inside, which she was exposed to throughout her journey to Earth. Also, her father Zor-El had implanted Kryptonian sun stones in her. The sun stones would activate when she is not exposed to yellow sunlight, and it would feed her yellow sunlight. This means she would still retain her powers under red sunlight. Kara was also trained by the Amazons and is now a well trained fighter.

Superman: The Animated Series (1996)

Supergirl first appeared in the DC Animated Universe's Superman: The Animated Series in the season 2 two-part episode entitled "Little Lost Girl." This incarnation of Supergirl was not Superman's cousin, and not even Kryptonian. She was from Krypton's sister planet "Argo," which was destroyed after Krypton exploded. Kara In-Ze was a teenage girl who was put in suspended animation with her parents just before Argo was destroyed, in hopes that they would survive. Superman was searching around Krypton, looking to find anything from his home planet. There, he finds a heat signature at a nearby planet, which was Argo. Superman would find Kara, the only survivor in suspended animation. Due to Argo becoming a cold wasteland, Kara developed cheimatophobia, which is the fear of cold. Superman takes Kara back to Earth and arranges her to live with the Kents while she adjusts to Earth life.
Supergirl teams up with Jimmy Olsen

Kara quickly develops her ability to fly, and eventually the rest of Superman's powers. Kara would visit Clark in Metropolis while wearing glasses and a brunette wig (a homage to the Silver Age Kara). Kara also made a costume similar to the one Linda Danvers wore, white top, blue skirt, and red cape. While in Metropolis, Kara would decide to help Jimmy Olsen investigate Intergang. The two would get into deep trouble when they discover Granny Goodness from Apokolips to be in cahoots with Intergang. Kara would change into Supergirl and battle against the Female Furies, Stompa, Mad Harriet, and Lashina. Superman would eventually arrive to help Supergirl, however the Female Furies were able to knock Superman unconscious and took him back to Apokalips. Supergirl would follow them to Apokalips and free Superman from Darkseid. They returned to Earth to stop two comets that Darkseid planned to hit Earth. Superman pushed one comet away and Supergirl injured herself destroying one that was too close to Metropolis. She eventually recovers.

Justice League Unlimited

Animated Supergirl
Animated Supergirl
Supergirl was one of the elected heroes who were invited to the Initiation of the Justice League Unlimited. She wore the Linda Danvers costume and went on a few missions with the Justice League. On one mission, Supergirl, the Question, and Green Arrow helped investigate her recurring dreams. They discovered that Cadmus had created a clone of Supergirl while she was recovering at S.T.A.R. Labs after her battle against Darkseid in the Superman Animated Series. The clone was named Galatea and was designed after Power Girl (Short blonde hair, white tights, with a hole in the middle of her clevage). Galatea was created to fight the Justice League if they went rogue.

However, she also began killing people and since she was a clone of Supergirl, Supergirl could see all the killings happening. Supergirl would battle against her and ebat her badly the first time. Professor Hamilton would take her back to the lab for her to recover, while also making upgrades. Amanda Waller would order Galatea to lead an army to fight the Justice League. Supergirl would battle Galatea again and defeated her when she pushed her into an electrical cable in the Justice League Watchtower. Green Arrow also begins developing somewhat of a father / daughter relationship with Supergirl, and talks to Superman about her well being many times.

He also told Superman that he and Black Canary were going to take her out for her birthday. In the second season of Justice League Unlimited, Supergirl changes her outfit to the modern age blue top, red skirt and cape. Green Arrow and Superman were talking about how she wanted her costume to look more like Superman's. In the episode entitled "Far From Home," Supergirl, Green Lantern ( John Stewart), and Green Arrow were brought to the 31st century where they met the Legion Of Super-Heroes. They asked the three of them to help them defeat the Fatal Five, and just before the mission, Braniac 5 reveals to Green Lantern and Green Arrow that Supergirl never returned from this mission. Supergirl would learn of her fate and decide to go through with it anyways. She was injured badly during the fight, but did not die. Kara began developing a relationship with Braniac 5, she reveals that the reason she never returned from the mission is probably because she wants to stay there. Kara stays in the 31st century while Green Lantern and Green Arrow went home. Green Arrow told the news to Superman, who was sad but happy that she found a place to fit in.
