The first Insect Queen was Lana Lang, Superman's romantic interest from his youth on Smallville. The second Insect Queen was also Lana Lang, but the one from the parallel universe of Earth-2. Edit
Origin
The first Insect Queen was Lana Lang, Superman's romantic interest from his youth on Smallville. In (Superboy #124 Oct. 1965), Lana rescues an insect-like alien trapped under a tree.
At first Lana just used it for help, like when she was at school by getting insect antenna to write down her homework she forgot at home by reading her mothers mind. After school her teacher told her she mispelled a word and had to write it down 100 times. When her teacher left she used the ring to turn into a centipede which had many arms to help her finish her task. When the teacher came back he was shocked she finished so fast saying only superboy could do something like this. After hearing that Lana got the idea, and decided to become a superheroine. she hurried home and made a costume out of stretchy material to fit her insect forms and beacme the Insect Queen.
Lana doned her Insect Queen outfit again (in Superboy 127) when her father Lewis Lang went to Africa. She met his friend Dr. Pelham who told them about an ancient pyramid hidden somewhere in Africa. They then went to look for a pyramid with her father, and Dr. Pelham's son Kim. She used her powers to help pass the traps laid out by the villagers to stop them from reaching the pyramid. When they reached the pyramid her father asked her to turn into an ant lion but she told him she could never repeat a form. Although she did not how the ring worked the alien came back, and told her that she could not repeat a form until another 24 hours. Lana then continued what her father asked until they were attacked by tribesman who guarder the pyramid. Kim was injured by a spear wound. She then hurried Kim back to his father. His wound was fatal so his father gave him a experimental serum from bee extract. It tunred him into a half bee human. He was horrified and upset and flew away, Lana then tried to show him being the way was not as bad, but he started to fall in love with her. She tunred him down only to make him angry. Lana then contacted Superboy for help. Kim then got into trouble this time with the tribesman thinking he is some demon. She comes to save him by scaring them away as a moth, and butterfly. After their ordeal she felt sorry for him and pretended she had amnesia to make him happy. Superboy arrived and believed she really did have amnesia and tried to help. But she finally revealed she was faking and Kim overhead them and vowed to kill Superboy. But he gave up, and Superboy told him he will help to find a cure for his mutation. Lana and her father then left with superboy back to Smallville .
Joining the Legion
Lana did not pursue her hero career for long, though she did try to join the Legion of Superheroes (In Adventure comics Issue 355) when she went to the fututre with Superboy. After touring the city she saw a plane on fire. She then hurried to put out the fire by turning into foam bug. After pulling off the rescue Dream Girl came out of the plane to thank her. She also said to her she pulled off that resuce expertly. So after hearing this Lana decided to join the Legion, but they did not allow her to join because her powers came from a device. She was upset at what happened that after the meeting she thought that if she could save a member they would let her join. So she asked Dream Girl to see in the future as a favor to saving her. She told Lana to not turn into a Moth. She then hitched a ride with Superboy to Antarctica to help him and the others deal with a villain named Oggar-Kan. After saving shrinking violet from his monster plants, she then rushed over to help superboy who had been exposed to kryptonite dust. She thought to turn into a moth to blow the the dust off, but she remebered what Dream Girl said about turning into a moth. But she did it anyway and accidentally blew off her bio-ring. Superboy then tried to look for it but he couldn't find hearing this she started to cry thinking she will be stuck as a moth forever. After the other members of the legion stopped Oggar-Kan they all helped to find her bio-ring. Light Lass then used her powers to make thinks lift into the air. Her ring was found in Superboy's cape pocket. Because of her rescuing, and helping the members of the Legion on their misson, they let her join the Legion Reserve.
In Superboy 125 it was Lana's birthday feeling depressed Superboy came and visited here and took her to the future due to the legion asking him to bring Lana. When they arrived the members were acting strange. Later they found out one of their members Ultra Boy was locked up because he went insane and attacked the Legion members. Eventually Superboy and Lana knew something was wrong. But once Superboy left the Legion then capture Lana and tied her and Ultra Boy to post where they were sentenced to death at a firing squad. As they fired the Legion members believed they were dead but Superboy came back took the shots for them. Ultra Boy then told them have been acting weird lately. Lana then donned her Insect Queen costume and went to help him. They found out the Legion members minds were being controlled by someone called the Master. He was using a mind control helmet to control the Legion members. Lana was then affected by his powers and was ordered to kill Ultra Boy. She then turned into a Wasp and supposedly stung him, but she was faking and turned into non lethal wasp. Superboy then was about to be controlled until Ultra Boy came up from behind an took off his mind control helmet. Because Lane saved the legion members she became an Honorary member.
When some of the Legion members were going after The Molecular Master, (who the Time Trapper sent to lure them into a trap) they were sent back in time to Smallvile. They tried to stay low but some of the members were captured by the local army. Shadow Lass, Dawnstar, and Superboy escaped but couldn't help them. Later Lana saw what happened and went to help get out of jail. She asked the army to talk to the Legion members the army captured. But they refused her entry. So Lana put on her Insect Queen outfit and tried to bust them out. Eventually the army captured her but Ultra Boy arrived to save her.
Lois Lane Insect Queen
In Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane Issue no. 69 Lois Lane became Insect Queen while Superman and Lana were away on business. She was Insect Queen for about a few days until a woman named Velvet O' Mara found out were she was staying (from her article she wrote about her new superhero identity and were she was staying) and stole the Bio-Ring from her. She teamed up with a gang to Kill superman by turning into a Kryptonian insect. But Lois & Lana found her in time before finishing her plan. They caught by making her turn into a Horned Repller of Kryton and insect that repels any metal. By baiting her with Kryptonite she beacme the Honred Repeller and the ring went flying off. Lois then used the ring to free superman and Lana battled Velvet O' Mara, Lana tunred into a Chemi Ant which made her turn into a harmless Krpytonian Glow Moth. She then was caught in the web she used on superman while getting away.It is currently unknown what happened to her after this.
Earth 2 Insect Queen
The second Insect Queen was also Lana Lang, but the one from the parallel universe of Earth-2. In Superman Family #213 (1981), she as an adult receives a scarab found by her archeologist father in an Egyptian tomb, not realizing that it was magical. Possessed by it, Lana became a supervillainess called Insect Queen, with the ability to control and enlarge insects. She briefly worked with the Ultra-Humanite, while the latter's mind was housed within a gigantic ant, until she was saved by the Earth-2 Superman and his wife, the original Lois Lane. Later, she became an occasional superhero, aiding Superman on at least one occasion. Note that in the reality changed by the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Lana never became either Insect Queen.
30th Century Insect Queen
This Insect Queen was named Lonna Leing (Obviously a nod to Lana Lang) she was from the planet Xanthu in the 30th Century, and was a member of the Uncanny Amazers. She wore a costume similar to the original Insect Queen and had the same powers just did not use a Bio-RIng.
Anti-Matter Insect Queen
The Fourth Insect Queen is a member of the Justice Underground, a team of heores who oppose the Crime Syndicate of America in DC Anti Matter Universe. The Justice Underground is seen in JLA Secret Files 2004. This insect Queen was basically a alternate version of Queen Bee. She could control insects and fly. They really did not explain or show too much of her.
New Earth Insect Queen
In the new continuity created by the events chronicled in Infinite Crisis, a new Insect Queen is being introduced. She first appears in Superman #671-673 (2008). In a nod towards the Silver Age continuity this alien Insect Queen has remade herself in the image of Lana Lang.
Powers
Each of the different Insect Queen had different powers only Lana Lang, and Lonna Leing had similar powers while the others had different abilities. Here is a list detailing each one of them.
Earth 1 Insect Queen
Lana can turn into any insects, arachnids, and crustaceans of Earth or any other world as long as she knows the name of the creature, but she can only use one that creatures form per day. If her Bio-Ring is removed from her while in insect form she will remain in that form until it is returned. She also displayed the ability to read others minds if she grew insect antennae. She also can ask for certain parts of an Insect like when she accidently turned her legs into grasshopper legs.
Earth 2 Insect Queen
The Earth 2 Insect Queen obtained her powers from a scarab from an ancient tomb, this gave her the power to control and enlarge insects. The scarab also made her evil and eventually superman had to stop her.
30th Century Insect Queen
Insect Queen can assume a wide variety of insectoid forms at will, either completely or more commonly partially, often retaining a normal humanoid upper body. Typically, these insectoid forms are human-sized or larger (during the war with Robotica, she assumed a giant caterpillar-like form to create an escape tunnel for a group of fighters although the combined effort of maintaining the form and tunnelling left her dangerously weakened.) Other examples of her power use include wings for flight, and strands of knotted silk extruded from her wrists.
Users of the Bio-Ring
Lana Lang: First received it in Superboy Issue 124.
Lois Lane: Used it in Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane issue 69 due to no one patrolling the city although non canon.
Velvet O' Mara: Stole it from Lois in Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane Issue 69.
