    Young Justice

Team » Young Justice appears in 268 issues.

Young Justice started as another legacy team consisting of a generation of sidekicks younger than the original Teen Titans lineup. Like the Teen Titans, they would eventually increase membership beyond sidekicks and make a name for themselves beyond their mentors.

    Short summary describing this team.

    Origin

    Young Justice's Founding Members

Superboy and Robin first teamed up in an investigation that pitted them against Poison Ivy and Metallo. They were not Young Justice at this point, but the two did get a better understanding from each other that led them to feel that they could get a lot from each other by talking about the problems they have being a hero with someone who would have an idea what it was like.

Later Robin, Superboy and Impulse interceded on behalf of a D.E.O. "cleaner" team transporting a gaseous entity known as Secret to the Wabe Facility for disposal. Working together, the teens were able to rescue "Secret" from her D.E.O. captors. This did not sit well with their adult counterparts and they were investigated for their involvement in the case by the adult heroes.

They decided to stick together, squatting in the old Happy Harbor Justice League headquarters.

    Creation

The Young Justice was created by writer Todd Dezago and artist Todd Nauck and first appeared in Young Justice: Secret #1. Most of their ongoing series was written by Peter David. Young Justice was created when the Teen Titans had become the Titans, so there was no current teen team.

    Team Evolution

    Expanded lineup
    Expanded lineup

The team was founded by three legacy characters: Robin/Tim Drake (sidekick of Batman), Superboy (sidekick of Superman), and Impulse (sidekick of The Flash and Max Mercury). They were described by Red Tornado as the representatives of the Freudian archetypes: Id, Ego, and Superego. When they set up the Justice League’s old mountain base as their new HQ, Red Tornado would volunteer as adult supervision, believing he had much to learn from them about the human condition.

Soon after, some girl power was added when Wonder Girl, Arrowette and Secret joined the team. Arrowette left the team after a traumatic adventure while other members would join, including the mysterious Empress, the incorrigible Slobo, and the Ray. Red Tornado was also eventually replaced with civilian, Snapper Carr.

There was also a reservist Young Justice roster that was called into action when the team went missing. Members included: Batgirl (Cassie Cain), Captain Marvel Jr., Lagoon Boy, Flamebird, and Beast Boy. And when the team decided to mount a mission into Zandia, they needed all hands on deck. They recruited over 30 new heroes to temporarily join them.

Shortly afterward, a conglomerate known as Optitron offered to sponsor the Titans and Young Justice after summoning them to San Francisco. Before any decisions could be made, a mysterious cybernetic girl known as Indigo emerged resulting in the apparent deaths of Troia and Omen. At Troia's funeral, Nightwing disbanded the Titans. Despite this, Wonder Girl, Robin, Impulse, and Superboy decided to form a new group of Teen Titans, under the guidance of the more experienced former Titans: Cyborg, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Raven

Young Justice returned in 2019 in DC Comics' Wonder Comics imprint created by Brian Michael Bendis. The team consists the original four members of Young Justice: Robin, Superboy, Impulse, and Wonder Girl, who had already been active as Teen Titans. Soon they were joined by three new members: Amethyst, Jinny Hex, and Teen Lantern. The memories of their previous adventures together were presented as foggy and complicated by changes to the multiverse over the course of multiple editorial changes (New 52 and Rebirth, specifically). This was included as a meta-element during Dark Crisis, when a 5th-dimensional imp took advantage of the multiverse damage to manipulate the team to fit his false nostalgia of their earlier adventures.

    Super-Cycle
    Super-Cycle

The team later went camping at the old Justice League of America's cave headquarters. They were goofing around and Impulse wrote graffiti all over they place with blue paint. He even wrote Hanson bite across the chest of what he thought was a statue of Red Tornado. Then Red Tornado became so annoyed that he reactivated surprising the teen heroes. Red Tornado would later become the guardian of the team. At this time however everything was interrupted when everyone heard a loud noise.

When they went to investigate they found that a strange thing had happened at an archeology site. By the time they got there police and reporters were already there. Also there were Agents Fite and Maad. Fite and Maad were agents of A.P.E.S. (All-Purpose Enforcement Squad). The two would later become long term adversaries for the the team. At the archeology dig one of the reporters by the name of Ace Atchinson asked the team is they were the Teen Titans. Superboy said no. Then Ace said oh you are the young Justice League of America. Then Impulse said "no,.. we're young but Just us" Oh said Ace, Young Justice and the name stuck. This is when they officially become Young Justice.

The group finds one of the archeologists has become the villain Mighty Endowed. She would also have a career against the team but because of her new features she was unable to get her balance and fell forward. Also freed from the dig is Super-Cycle. Super-Cycle is a sentient motor bike who will also become a member of the Young Justice.

    No Man’s Land

    No Man's Land

Gotham City has suffered a magnitude 7.6 earthquake, which has caused the U.S. Government to write it off as a “No Man’s Land.” Robin has been banned from the city by Batman because it is too dangerous. Upon hearing this, Kon and Bart, who were not specifically banned, headed toward the city to represent Robin.

Angered, Robin heads to Gotham to make sure they don’t make matters worse by being so impulsive. On his way in through the bay, he rescues a curious Lagoon Boy, who wandered on to land and was attacked by a gang. Lagoon Boy helped Robin retrieve Superboy and Impulse from Poison Ivy, only to be caught and chastised by Batman for being in the city limits.

On their way out, Lagoon Boy tells them of a Kobra Kommando submarine he saw off the coast. Together, they took on the Kobras and sank their sub, earning an ally they can call in the future.

    Supergirl vs Young Justice
    Supergirl vs Young Justice

After defending Red Tornado from cops when the courts didn’t approve of his guardianship of his adopted daughter, the team needed to make a quick getaway. The Super-Cycle, always acting with a mind of its own, took them underground to a place where it believed they were needed. They uncovered a scam from Dante, the son of a gangster and religious scholar, who has plotted with winged demons and their master, Dis, to recreate a physical version of Hell. He would drag criminals to it, who would be convinced they had died and gotten eternal judgment. Dante would then put them to work for free labor. Young Justice wouldn't stand for it, but they overwhelmed by the demons and taken prisoner

Eventually, Supergirl would chase another demon into the underworld only to come face to face with the now possessed team. Supergirl couldn’t figure out how to remove the demons without hurting the team, so she turned her attention to Dante. Young Justice decided if they couldn’t fight her, they would start trouble in the town she has been patrolling. Luckily, the Super-Cycle was able to find the right energy spectrum to shoot at the demons and free the team.

Once freed, the team with Supergirl to rescue Dante’s prisoners and destroy Dis.

    Sins of Youth

    Adult Justice
    Adult Justice

After Wonder Girl made a big stink in the news about their level of responsibility despite their age, she announced a rally for justice and guilted the Justice League, Justice Society, and a few others to show up and support them. Klarion, working with The Agenda, used this as an opportunity for some magic chaos. He casts a spell that reverses the ages of the heroes, making Young Justice the adults and the JLA and JSA into kids needing supervision.

The regressed Leaguers struck out on their own, forcing Young Justice to split up and keep them from being too impulsive. Secret lacked a compatible Leaguer so she teamed with Deadman (now Deadboy) and captured Teekl, Klarion’s familiar. Once they had corralled all the youngsters, they were able to use Teekl to flush out and pressure Klarion into fixing them.

Klarion obliged, however, Lobo was left regressed and joined the team until he could be fixed.

    Raid on Zandia

    All hands on deck
    All hands on deck

Empress learns that her father, Agent Fite, and his partner, Agent Maad, have gone missing while on mission in Zandia. The only clue was a cameo necklace that was falsely attributed to Fite. Empress knew it was her mother’s. She conducts a voodoo ritual to find the source of the necklace. Once she had the location, the team mounted up a rescue mission. They were able to save Maad, but unfortunately, they were too late to save Fite.

The responsible party was Baron Agua Sin Gaaz, Empress’ grandfather who was previously responsible for the death of her mother. He was operating out of Zandia, a supervillain nation with no extradition. Fite’s agency, A.P.E.S., did not have jurisdiction. Thus, the team agreed to go but not without backup. They called in favors from a number of peers including: The Point Men, The Ravers, The Relative Heroes, the Supermen of America, and the Wonder Twins (among others).

Lady Zand, ruler of the country, was ready for them. She had assembled nearly every villain in the DC universe to stand at the ready and protect their shores from the incoming heroes. Using the battle as a distraction, Empress was able to teleport herself and Agent Maad to Sin Gaaz’s side. They weren’t enough to defeat him, but Miss Arrowette (who was posing as her daughter) was able to kill him.

Afterward, Empress found the experiment that Sin Gaaz had been working on: infant clones of her parents, which she decided to take guardianship of.

    Secret Spoiled

    Secret gone bad
    Secret gone bad

Secret reveals that Harm, a mysterious and deadly villain they faced in the first days of their cooperation, was her brother, and her father was on death row for killing him before he could kill anyone else. She believed it to be unfair, however, almost every one of her teammates refused to help her. Only Slobo would. When she returned with her father, she did not realize he was possessed by Harm and psychically manipulating her emotions. She got so angry when the team confronted her that Darkseid could feel it from across the universe.

Darkseid boom-tubed to her location and made her an offer she couldn’t refuse for her and her “father” to come to Apokolips. Slobo also makes off with the Super-Cycle just in time for the cops and the Justice League to chew them out. They were cleared of any wrong-doing having not helped Secret but were saddled with a PR nightmare.

Secret did not stay hidden though. She attacked the DEO and Spoiler. She warned the team that this was only the beginning. They started to regroup and come to grips with fighting their old friend, when Secret showed up full of rage. They were no match for her until Robin showed up in his civilian identity, Tim Drake. He had long resisted sharing it with the team. He was able to talk Secret out of attacking, which angered Darkseid. He used his omega beams on Secret transforming her into a mortal girl and left.

    Graduation Day

    Young Justice joins Teen Titans
    Young Justice joins Teen Titans

Red Tornado, Snapper Carr, and The Ray had moved on. Arrowette officially retired to get away from the danger. Secret was de-powered. Young Justice was on the verge of ending when they received an offer from Optitron, Inc. They wanted to sponsor a superhero team, and the team was invited if the Titans rejected the proposal.

Before any of them could properly accept their offer, Cyborg is attacked by Indigo, a cyborg from the future that was hunting cybernetics in the present. After hurting Cyborg, Argent, and Empress, the two teams banded together to stop her. However, she had already activated a Superman robot. It went berserk killing Omen and Donna Troy.

At Donna’s funeral, Nightwing disbanded the Titans, but the members of Young Justice (Wonder Girl, Superboy, Robin, and Impulse) disagreed. They made a deal with the non-sidekick members of the Titans (Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy) to continue working as the Teen Titans.

You can read more about this team here: Teen Titans

    Rebirth

In the New 52 reboot of the DC universe, the four main members of Young Justice were part of the Teen Titans. Their history together and the history of the previous Titans was foggy, the nature of which was chalked up to the chaos surrounding the rebooting of the universe.

As that chaos began to take shape, old memories came back and old histories became more clear. According to Impulse, there was a former Young Justice. The memories were still not quite in reach, but the team was reunited due to them.

Later, they find out that it was due to STAR labs experiments with dimensional travel.

    Gemworld

    No Caption Provided

Robin, Cassie, and Bart just happen to be in Metropolis for their own reasons when a Gemworld invasion occurs. They are joined by Jinny Hex and Teen Lantern and are able to push back the forces. They give chase through the rift to Gemworld while Bart yells about Young Justice being back. There, they team up with Amethyst, recently deposed ruler of Gemworld, and Superboy, who had previously gotten accidentally trapped in Gemworld, to confront Dark Lord Opal, Amethyst’s rival.

As they fight Opal, Opal’s powers prove corrupted and spill out of him, causing massive feedback and tremors. He was causing reality to shift, but was blaming the resetting of the universe on Earth-Prime. The team is able to defeat him, but they offend the ruling class. They agree to send Young Justice home, and Amethyst agrees to go with them.

However, secretly the council banishes them for good and secretly sends them into the multiverse rather than directly home.

    Lost in the Multiverse

    Lost in the Multiverse
    Lost in the Multiverse

The team quickly bounced around different Earths before landing on Earth-3, home of the Crime Syndicate of Amerika, where they are confronted by the villainous versions of themselves. Robin and Impulse are saved by Batwoman (Stephanie Brown), who has received a copy of the Multiverse Map from her world’s Dr. Fate. They intend to use it to get home but are first put a stop their evil counterparts for the good of this Earth

Now that they had the map, it was pretty easy to get home. They ended up in Naomi’s home town in Oregon due to a fresh dimensional rip that was already there. As was the STAR labs project that got Superboy stuck in Gemworld in the first place. Superboy tried confronting them on his own, but they trapped him, sending him back into the multiverse.

This also caused dimensional overcharge which got the attention of the Wonder Twins and H-Dial Keepers, Miguel and Summer. They traced it to STAR labs and continued recruiting more heroes to take them on. After fighting through multiple portals and the monsters spilling through them, they catch up with Dr. Glory and pull Superboy from the multiverse.

    Dark Crisis

    Bart's quantum entanglement trap
    Bart's quantum entanglement trap

After the Justice League was killed by the Dark Army, Young Justice had a reunion at the memorial service at the Hall of Justice. When Wonder Girl wasn't looking, Superboy, Robin, and Impulse disappeared. They were transported to one of their first adventures as Young Justice when they fought The Mighty Endowed. While Wonder Girl is determined to find them in the present, the team is joined by a younger version of Wonder Girl in the fight against the Mighty Endowed.

This world the boys find themselves in is familiar to their old adventures but also not. In some ways, it feels like an idealized world, one where their adventures could be fun again, and their mentors had a much more favorable opinion of them, especially Wally to Bart. However, it was also weirdly traditional with casual bigotry that convinced them to look into it deeper. They were eventually confronted by Mickey Mxyzptlk, the son of Mister Mxyzptlk, a self-proclaimed Young Justice superfan, who wants the team to return to a misinterpreted better time to satisfy his own nostalgia.

Rejecting Mickey's world, Impulse uses his connection to the Speed Force to find Cassie's unique frequency. She had been looking for her friends with Red Tornado and Arrowette. Once Bart has a lock on them, he is able to bridge the gap and bring the team back to reality. Unfortunately, Mickey follows. He continues to torment them until Impulse creates a "quantum entanglement trap" that he needs the help of the whole team keeping together. With Mickey trapped, they could join a fight at the Hall of Justice against the Dark Army.

In the 853rd Century, there was a version of Young Justice.

The old Young Justice headquarters has been turned into a museum of the fallen called the Hall of Heroes.

Among the statues of the fallen heroes was Slobo, who was conscious inside his own statue after being struck by Darkseid's omega beams.

Superboy was the millionth clone of the original and an OMAC.

Robin the Toy Wonder was a robot sidekick programmed by the current Batman.

Impulse was theorized to be a collection of scattered memories from speedsters absorbed by the Speed Force.

    Earth-3

Earth-3 is the home of the Crime Syndicate of Amerika, villainous versions of the Justice League. Thus, Young Justice’s counterpart is also villainous, and since the Crime Syndicate had traveled to Earth-Prime, Earth-3 Young Justice was left to their own devices.

    Early history

    Young Justice Animated Series
    Young Justice Animated Series

Prior to the formation of The Team, Robin was the first junior protégé to begin his crime fighting career, starting in 2006, at the age of nine. A year later, Green Arrow introduced Speedy as his partner.

Inspired by his Justice League colleagues, Aquaman offered both Garth and Kaldur'ahm a position to become his protégé after they saved him from Ocean-Master. Kaldur became Aqualad.Flash was not fond of the idea of the responsibility of a sidekick, but his nephew Wally differed. He recreated the accident that gave his uncle his super speed power. Partly out of guilt, Flash let him become his protégé, naming him Kid Flash.

Before the Cadmus incident, the four sidekicks knew each other; and Robin entrusted Kid Flash with his secret identity. However, the four of them had never been together all at the same time. Last to take a protégé was Martian Manhunter. Miss Martian claimed she had won the right to become her uncle's sidekick after winning a competition on Mars, though this may not entirely be accurate, as Martain Manhunter has claimed he found M'gann stowed aboard his ship, and claimed to be his niece.

    Present

The Justice League arrived at the scene of the destroyed Cadmus facility, and Batman was not happy. He did not, however, expect the young heroes to rebel against the League. They insisted they did good work, and wanted to work together more. Batman asked for three days to plan things.

Batman gathered the four in the old Justice League hideout inside Mount Justice. They would become a team, on Justice League's terms, handling covert ops missions. They were introduced to the fifth member of the Team, Miss Martian.

Kid Flash was eager to let Speedy join, but he declined, claiming their "junior Justice League was a joke". He was not interested in fighting on the Justice League's terms, and claimed he was tired of them telling him what to do.

After several missions, Batman and Green Arrow noticed Artemis had been following the Team in the fight against Amazo, and offered her membership.

Artemis was introduced to the Team the next day, and got off to a rocky start with Kid Flash, who still wanted Speedy on the Team.

Zatanna moved into the Cave with the Team, after her father was taken as a permanent host by Nabu.
