While Aquaman and Aqualad were both Atlanteans, previous stories had established them as outcasts not actually allowed to enter the realm. Here the Atlanteans have been conquered by "amphibious aliens from another dimension". The two exlles are the only chance Atlantis has to regain its freedom.
The victory at the end has Aquaman declared a Hero of Atlantis. He and Aqualad may enter and leave the undersea kingdom at will. This issue is also considered the first appearance of the silver-age Aquaman and origin issue.
