Ahhh! You beat me to it with this thread. There are a few things I would retcon. All of Bendis run in Uncanny along with the O5 and the Kitty Starlord relationship and Iceman being gay. I'd retcon Schism, AVX and House of M as well as some of Grant Morrison's run - the Fantomex stuff and Xorn. Austen's run too.
Besides that there are other stories I would tweek or change around. Like with Hope Summers. The Jean Grey-Phoenix retcon whatever. Cassandra Nova origin. Cable and Rachel Greys origins. Monet and Psylockes origins and developments. I'd even tweek the Krakoa story in which we got Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus. I think I would retcon things about Wolverines origin also or at least make it so it was still unrevealed or a mystery to him. There are few deaths I'd change too.
Promoting the Inhumans is fine. They are interesting. But trying to put them in the Xmens place or corner of the Marvel universe is the problem. Sure they've been around a long time and should get development but do they really need to be on earth and playing the hated and feared thing. I hope they don't go in that direction. In fact I liked what Fraction was supposed to be doing with them playing up a Game of Thrones type theme
@oldnightcrawler: I have a different viewpoint on it obviously. The New Mutants in my opinion were the next generation. There's just no way anyone can tell me that adding Dani or Cannonball or Karma to a team would be a detriment. In fact Magik was one of the few bright spots in Bendis' recent butchery.
In theory I would agree with you about the Avengers. However Marvel went and made it Avengers vs Xmen, so for me this is partly where the divide is. The Avengers are a group of individuals that come together to form a team to face threats that yada yada yada. Like the Justice League. The Xmen were always a team and family. I will agree that the Unity squad concept was not horrible neither the Illuminati/New Avengers. However I've always preferred them separate. Rogue not being with the xmen but with the Avengers is a problem. Kitty in GOTG is just ridiculous.
Its all a matter of preference and opinion though, so there's really no right or wrong here. Some live the direction and think its all great while others don't. I happen to be one of those who doesn't care for it.
@cattlebattle: that may be true. But the writers have failed miserably. The can't plot a story or get existing characters right, so how can they make the redundant and boring new ones interesting?
@oldnightcrawler: Yea. i wish I didnt really care that Xmen characters are being shunted off to other groups like Avengers and Inhumans and Guardians, but I do. Its a problem for me. So while some are enjoying what they might see as a comic book heyday, I see it differently. Maybe Im a CompleXer or whatever, but I feel like Xmen characters should be in Xmen books, bottom line. I dont see whats so bad about them being in Xmen books really. So yea to me its a big deal, because when i see xmen characters getting development in other books while we get the same old rehashed plots or teams put together that would really never be only in the interest of creating infighting and drama.... I feel some kinda way.
I hope Fantomex doesnt survive the experience. Lol. Hopefully we get Emma and Scott though Im sure many dont want that and it probably wont happen. So I can see Polaris, Frenzy, Gambit, Cable, Domino, or Bishop filling the other 2 spots. And if Fantomex does indeed bite the bullet then 3 of those that I mentioned.
Maybe thats why some of those characters can be used to deal with the infected since they dont have regular bodies. But at one point they did, so its probably something related to that. Either way i think its too smart a question for the current Marvel brain-trust to answer or even get into. And i really cant think of any writer who would be able to explain this, so i would just choose to be dumb and entertained by the glitz and glamour as opposed to actually thinking about it since thats the type of fans they want these days. Marvel says: Logic and reason is stuuuppiiddd!! Lol
@oldnightcrawler: yea. I think we'll just have to disagree on the stupid creations because in my opinion the New Mutants are far superior to any of the latest stuff we've gotten. I get your point and agree with you but I don't think there's any justification for the latest creations. I'm not a fan of them at all. In fact the best New Mutants in my opinion were always Dani, Sunspot, Karma and Magma. Cannonball and Rahne were always meh to me as far as their power sets. Cypher and Warlock were hust stupid in my opinion. I happen to think there is a place for all them among the Xmen though, just like people always put Jubilee on a team and others with redundant and weird powers. I'm happy Magik is getting some focus but so should others. Its really kind of ridiculous that Cannonball and Sunspot are getting more development in Avengers books as opposed to what they got in Xmen. But I guess we all have to drink the koolaid Marvel is pissing out right.
