Best New Comic Book Battles: 04/05/13

This week we feature fights from the pages of GREEN ARROW, VENOM and DETECTIVE COMICS!

It's Friday and that can only mean one thing on Comic Vine -- pictures and recaps of this week's best fights in new comics... or at least the ones I like the most! This week was legitimately tough to pick a top three... primarily because Andy Diggle and Tony S. Daniel provided a really spectacular but short fight between Supes and huge vehicles. It was a difficult choice, but I ended up tossing that one in the honorable mentions. Why, you ask? Because Bane busted his way back into The New 52, and there's absolutely no way I'd miss a chance to highlight that one.

Green Arrow vs. Komodo (GREEN ARROW #19)

Creative panel layout, vivid artwork and an over the top fight made Green Arrow vs. Komodo and his daughter and obvious choice this week. The fight began with Ollie falling to his death, but as expected, he didn't plummet to his doom. Instead, he grabbed onto the ledge directly in front of Komodo and promptly stabbed the dude's foot with an arrow. What happens next is this awesome and chaotic freefall.

Anti-riot arrow... or Ecto Cooler arrow?
Anti-riot arrow... or Ecto Cooler arrow?

Komodo has proven one step ahead of Ollie and that once again holds true. He tags the Emerald Archer with a ricochet shot and follows up with a vicious volley of arrows and, just to be safe, a fist to the face (see below to feel our hero's pain). Ollie isn't exactly Wolverine, so taking this amount of damage isn't something he can exactly walk off. Despite the extensive damage, he manages to pull off an epic action roll and takes down the villain with one well placed shot.

Brutal violence has never looked so beautiful.

Before Ollie can discover who's behind the mask, the villain's daughter, Emiko Lacroix, enters the fray. Ollie makes the mistake of underestimating the wee lad because she's apparently sporting some degree of superhuman speed. The little girl is firing arrows way faster than him and, after taking yet another arrow, Ollie realizes it's time to bolt. So, like a true hero, he dives out through the construction waste tube. Slide your way to a glorious retreat!

I know I shouldn't love Komodo, but I totally do.

Do yourself a favor and start reading this book.

Toxin vs "Slayback's brother" (VENOM #33)

As you can tell by the title, I have no idea what this experiment's name is. In fact, I don't think one has even been provided in the pages. But you know what? That doesn't matter when Declan Shalvey is illustrating him and Cullen Bunn is putting him through insane fights. In this issue, the crazy monster faces off against an equally horrendous and frightening character: Toxin. Oh yes, the time has come to see Eddie Brock kick some ass.

All he wanted was a kiss, Toxin.
All he wanted was a kiss, Toxin.

While this dude's physicals stats aren't clearly defined, we all know Toxin is quite a powerhouse. Under Rick Remender he was a huge brute and prior to that he could take on Venom and Carnage at once. Clearly, that still holds true because, despite taking a few slashes here and there, he dictates the majority of this fight and it's not long before there's a dismemberment.

Toxin's only winning because his enemy's shoelace is untied. CHEATER!

From here, Toxin tries to "Bane" his foe... except instead of breaking him over his knee, he's trying to accomplish the feat with his raw strength. But there's a wildcard here. You notice those huge tanks and all that on the villain? He's the result of an experiment and these seemingly sentient synthetics jump into action and give Toxin two painful pokes to the chest.

It's like the scene in Alien... but... way more messed up.

Seeing as the symbiote has an accelerated healing factor, Toxin recovers and the enemy is able to flee. That said, who here thinks they planted something in Toxin before bolting? DUN DUN DUNNNN!

Bane vs. Talons (DETECTIVE COMICS #900)

Excuse me while I let my inner fanboy take over... BANE IS BACK OH MY GOD YES! Sorry, couldn't help it. Bane's without question my favorite DC villain, so I'm thrilled to see him return after a not-so epic initial debut in The New 52. In the hands of James Tynion IV, I'm happy to see Bane once again seems to be a nice balance of brains and brawn.

COME AT BANE, BROS.
COME AT BANE, BROS.

Okay, it's clear his grace and hand-to-hand technique technique will remain in the past, but seeing as he's bigger and stronger than before, I'm fine with him letting his more brutish style take over -- you know, as long as he's not a buffoon. As you can see, these Talons are completely screwed. A healing factor doesn't mean squat if your head is squished by his freakishly large hands.

You know that kid who keeps spamming cheap attacks in video games? Yeah, that's Bane.

Bane wouldn't truly be back without breaking a back, I suppose. As we saw in the pages of NIGHTWING, a broken spine is only a minor inconvenience for a Talon. Unfortunately for them, Bane's got no problem dishing out even more violent measures to keep 'em down for the count. Who else heard "FATALITY!" in their head when they read the following scene?

Oh, my...
Oh, my...

TALON #7 needs to be here right now. Give me more Bane!
