Are gay/ gay couples being downplayed?

I was just thinking about Midnighter and Apollo and how I've never seen them makeout. Then I thought about Wiccan and Hulkling and how they never even show affection toward each other really. So it it that the homosexuals (excluding lesbians) are being downplayed in comics. I mean I'm not homosexual myself, but one day I'd like to see what a kiss between Midnighter and Apollo would look like. And a kiss between Wiccan and Hulkling.

Agreed, which is weird since the writer of Young Avengers is gay right?

A few gay couples I know do the same... But my cousin refers to her wife as her wife, guess it just comes down to preference

Midnighter and Apollo aren't very popular regardless.Their sexuality doesn't have anything to do with how little you've seen them interact. You just don't read enough.

LOL @ this thread!.........To answer the main question, YES. Gay relationships are focused on considerably less as opposed to hetero ones. But that isn't really that shocking. While gays are more visible and accepted in today's society (and comics), we still have a long way to go before we can truely say the gay community is equally represented and treated the same.

Why would the gay community EVER be equally represented when there isn't an equal amount of homosexual relationships to hetero ones? It's only accurate that they would be represented less..right?

Right, but I wasn't necessarily talkin bout the actual amount of gay characters/ couples, but more so how writers/artists portray them. They don't focus much on the intimacy between gay couples and it's definetly not as in-your-face as it is with straight couples or as often. You hardly ever see gay characters in romantic or suggestive situations as you do with straight characters. Yes, gay charaters may have A kiss, but that's about it. Don't even get me started on all the sexual innuendos with straight characters! lol

I don't count Karolina Dean, she is an alien who is dating a male alien. I realize that he is a shape-shifter who can turn into a woman, but that is still a guy.

The reasons allot of gay characters get "downplayed" is because they are unpopular and most people don't know who they are and don't care. It has nothing to do with their sexuality only their character

True, but most gay characters didn't "come out" or weren't created until recently because its not as big of a deal anymore. Some characters are pretty boring and writers use the gay card to try to spice them up, but most also haven't been able to build as huge of a fan base like classic characters have because they haven't had as much time to develop. There simply aren't many "classic" gay characters to choose from.

It's like Marvel was trying to make the most extreme in your face relationship they could. It's inter-racial, inter-species, gay, bi relationship.  It's even worse than the people who have  relationship with robots.

Then maybe it IS simply because they are gay. jk That or writers are affraid to make awsome gay characters! lol P.S. I know a lot of people who do find new gay characters like Wiccan or even Anole very appealing (I don't follow DC as much). To each their own I guess. But just imagine (even though it would never happen) if they made Spiderman, Superman, or some other big name gay or bi! Don't you think at least some people would be turned off by that! Not everyone is as gay friendly, so yeah, a character's sexual orientation does play some role in their popularity in certain people's eyes just like race or religion would. (Even though these are fictional characters!) Ridiculous, yet silly at the same time. lol

@riri4life:  It would be the same though if they took a character like Midnighter and went, "You know this character would be more popular if he was  straight." I would be turned off by that too. There is not reason to change a character that dramatically when they haven't shown any signs that they could be.

Yeah,  but you couldn't really turn an established gay character straight, but rather bi, or in denial, or if they had their mind wipped maybe. lol As far as there being "signs" a character might be gay, the writers could really do anything to make that happen as well because these aren't real people or real situations. lol I get what you're saying though.

I just noticed that whenever a homosexual relationship (in Marvel) is drawn up or something, it's always in the Avengers titles. Runaways ran into the Avengers and Young Avengers before so I'm not tryna hear thatb whole they aren't Avengers thing. They are an Avengers team without the title. Northstar, given isn't an Avenger, but when was the last time anyone saw that dude. Hell, maybe if Marvel wasn't bein so uptight about their content, they might gain an even bigger audience. Just have one issue where Hulking and Wiccan make out and/or come close to having sex (if they already haven't) and see how the public responds. Not the homophobs or uptights, the true comic fans. We don't care about how graphic things get, as long as it's good. Hell, make a issue of X-men revealing some homosexual fling that Logan may have had in his World War I days or something and I'm pretty sure people would express a great interest in this topic. Oh, and by the way, DC you suck ass for not showing more action, sex, vulgar language, etc. Bastards.

How is a thread about people's sexual preference and how that's being displayed in comics offensive? Also, it's probably not a good idea to agree with somebody who's been banned for trolling from two different accounts within a 24 hour period.

Or it was just, originally, a political marriage.  It wouldn't have been the first time in history (that is, if Karolina and Xavin had been real people) that people get married for political reasons, but really swung in the other direction.  Karolina was just lucky her partner could shapeshift.

Its a touchy subject. They  want to be more contemporary but not offend their readers. I think in time we will see more gay relationships (kissing, ect.)

Maybe the people who write comics don't know how to write for gay people..not being gay themselves. They can't write for black people either.

Now there's a concept.

I get what you're saying. They only seem to do it when they're trying to make an impact. (Also, it might be nice to see Karma have a relationship, as well. The only thing she ever came close to was an unrequented crush on Kitty)
