Are gay/ gay couples being downplayed?

I was just thinking about Midnighter and Apollo and how I've never seen them makeout. Then I thought about Wiccan and Hulkling and how they never even show affection toward each other really. So it it that the homosexuals (excluding lesbians) are being downplayed in comics. I mean I'm not homosexual myself, but one day I'd like to see what a kiss between Midnighter and Apollo would look like. And a kiss between Wiccan and Hulkling.

Exactly. Most of the top 10 comics are being written by heterosexual males. They try and do a gay storyline and have a difficult time doing it. A few will hint at it. Some will even make a remark in the book about another character, but for the most part, they ignore them.

I don't think gay couples are being downplayed in comics at all 'cause I've seen a number of them show affection in both comics and (especially)manga. Gay couples (well, mostly males) are being downplayed in most of TV, but I could be wrong.

I think over the years it's become more and more comfortable.  I don't keep up on Midnighter and Apollo, but I know about Northstar, Hulkling, and most surprisingly to me, Daken, although I suppose he's more bi, but I have noticed he's quite the flirt with some guys, including Hawkeye.  There's a lot of homosexual taboo in the comic series The Boys.

The majority of the country is against gay marriage. Therefore it's no surprise that most comic book readers don't want to see 'gay couples' kissing. But if you really want to see 'gay' stuff THAT bad then simply watch tv shows and movies Hollywood puts out. It's all over the place.

It ALWAYS was. Religious people are the ones making us think there is ANYTHING wrong with ANY kind of sexual preference. I DARE anyone to make an argument against this without bringing up religion or some vague moral code(sure as hell can't use logic). But yeah, I think gay scenes aren't going to be shown often in comics because America simply thinks that being gay is a taboo, which is quite silly. Things seem to be changing as more and more awareness in being brought to this issue. Maybe one day.

Yes I do think gay characters are being downplayed but mainly from Marvels side. I can't think of a significant lgbt character at Marvel beside maybe Mystique. Northstar may had been the first to come out but Mystique is much more well known. She has appeared on every X-men cartoon and in movies. What has Northstar been in? I can name plenty of DC gay characters but at Marvel they're few and far between. And to put this in perspective I'm gay.

Haven't read thread, am worried about arguing with someone from 6 months ago who isn't here or something lol

Downplayed? Ah, I wouldn't say so. This is comics, most writers write horrible straight couples as well, so there is a line, between a downplayed relationship, and a relationship done right. Shatterstar and Rictor are doing pretty well. Probably the most interesting relationship in Marvel comics right now. Wiccan and Hulking have progressed but i have some criticism of that, not to strongly mind you, nor exclusive to their relationship or characters either. I miss Moondragon and Phyla Vell.

No thanks. Keep the fu**ed up world in the fu**ed up world, not in comics. Next the characters will all have a reverse revelation and all become atheists. Or they'll be a love triangle between batman, superman, and a goat. Keep it under the rug if at all please...

Interesting, Carol's Danver's rape by a time traveling prince who was her actual offspring back when comics were even more comics, than comics now, sounds so wholesome really? I agree with Batman and Superman and a Goat. I cringed when then that happened back in Loeb's run.

Right, so it's not f--ked up to have The Joker or Frank Castle running around (both with body counts well in the quadrouple digits).... but the second someone comes out of the closet...

Its okay though, since Batman, Superman and the Goat are all straight. No problem. It would only be a problem if they were gay you see? At least for some people.

Screwed up things happening in comics involving straight people? = Okay. 'Screwed up' things happening in comics involving straight people, gay people, and probably women, and people from other countries, with different skin color? = Not the kind of things "we" want in comics, put your hands over your children's eyes.

@Umbra- I'm saying I don't like to read about it.
@ venom- To tell you the truth I prefer golden/silver age comics. None of the worldly stuff really, simple goodfellas. A few good men. None of this new age stuff. All opinion, but still.

My opinion (for what it's worth) could be summed up as follows.

Scenes of homosexual intimacy may not be as up-played as those heterosexual intimacy, but I can't say that homosexual relationships are being downplayed. With greater social acceptance of the the LGBT community in our everyday, various forms of media are becoming more comfortable with depictions or homosexuality. Unfortunately, the mass media is still relatively new to this acceptance. Unless I'm mistaken, (and I may be) it's still been less than ten years since we've seen our first homosexual kiss on prime-time network television. Social change is frequently a gradual thing, but with recent civil recognition (same sex marriage movement/repeal of DADT) of that which was formerly referred to as an "alternate" or "deviant" lifestyle, we're bound to see more and more recognition in the comics.

What concerns me even moreso is the "fad-like" treatment of LGBT relationships in the comics. The determinations by authors to retcon straight characters as gay or to have characters "come out" are being used like an issue-selling marketing-ploy. The subject is being regarded as little more than a novelty. Was Kathy Kane brought into the contemporary continuity as a lesbian because it was a logical character choice, or because they thought the 18-35 male majority of comic readers might think it was or "hot?"

Comics are a driving force in our world's pop-culture... and with the recent aforementioned civil recognition being so prevalent in our pop-culture, it stands to reason that it would prevail in the comics as well. The real question is, "Will the writers, artists and editors use the power of this 'driving force' responsibly?" I, for one, certainly hope that they will.
