He has an adversarial relationship with his handlers. The only reason he works for them is because if he doesn't do it willingly, they'll just shut off his brain and use him through the spine.

And how so?

• Oddly enough, he's the only one out of all of the batches to inherit their father's crimson eyes.
• Whereas a majority of Dogs have a 'collar', Nathaniel has a 'spine'. This signifies a higher importance over the regular Dogs.
• He appears fascinated with observing humans, especially what makes them tick.
• Chaotic. If he didn't have the spine implanted, his handlers would have an absolute disaster on their hands.
• He's yet to experiment with sexuality, and thus has no idea what being attracted to someone is like.

The Loners employees are so used to their violent customers that when someone walks in coated in blood, they don't even bat an eyelash. The long-time employees even make a game out of how quickly it takes for new employees to freak out.

Nate dropped himself down onto a seat at the bar. The front of his gray shirt was coated in blood. Some of it his.. and some of it not his. Most of it was fresh. Oddly enough, the bartender didn't freak out. "Beer. Now." He demanded, forking over cash upfront.
