After being shipwrecked and stranded on an island for five years, Oliver soon discovered he wasn't alone on The Island. Instead, the remote location was being used by drug smugglers, run by Warren Zytle. Oliver was trained by a local rebel Malcolm Merlyn to become a highly advanced fighter and master archer, and learned to not just fight for himself but for the people you can't fight for themselves. Unfortunately, Malcolm and Ollie's relationship turned sour after Queen found evidence that Malcolm had staged the storm to kill his father, with orders from his mother Moira. The two had a heated confrontation ending with Oliver leaving Merlyn to die and escaping back to Star City on a smuggling boat.
Oliver would return secretly to his hometown as "Ollie Dearden", he now had a new mission, bring down Q-Corp as revenge for his father. Ollie needed a place to start his crusade, so he started looking until he found a queer club called The Quiver with cheap rooms above, due to all the noise from punk band "The Birds of Prey" who often use it as a venue.
