Origin

Johnny Blaze

Johnny Blaze was the son of a motorcycle stunt rider named Barton Blaze. Working for a man by the name of Crash Simpson, Barton Blaze and his son Johnny became accustomed to the life of a carnival. When Barton Blaze suddenly died, Johnny's world was turned upside down as he lost the last of his family. Not long after the stunt accident that killed his father, Johnny Blaze was adopted by Crash Simpson. Upon his adoption, Johnny lived with Crash, his wife Mona, and his daughter Roxanne.

Johnny Blaze

Johnny and Roxanne became very attached to one another. One day, while Johnny and Roxanne were practicing a motorcycle stunt, the motorcycle caught on fire and was about to explode. Roxanne jumped off the motorcycle; but Johnny continued to ride it in an attempt to prevent the tent they were practicing in from burning to the ground. Mona immediately ran over to see if Johnny was alright. However, as she approached Johnny the motorcycle exploded - putting Mona into the hospital. From her hospital bed, Mona Simpson had one request for Johnny Blaze: that he would never ride in the motorcycle shows ever again. After those words, she passed away - making them the last words she would ever speak in this life.

Keeping his promise to Mona, Johnny never rode in a motorcycle show. However he continued to practice and improve his riding, despite the promise he had made. He kept his riding a secret. One day as Johnny was practicing, Roxanne stumbled into the tent where he was. Upon doing so, she discovered that Johnny knew how to ride. While practicing continuously, the Crash Simpson stunt show continued and prospered. Not long after the Crash Simpson Stunt Show had gained in popularity, Crash Simpson discovered that he had cancer and was going to die soon. Johnny felt as though he would not be able to bear the loss of another fatherly figure in his life. Therefore, he decided the he would do whatever was needed to save Crash Simpson's life - no matter the cost.

Making a pact with the devil , Johnny Blaze sold his soul in order to save Crash Simpson from the disease that was killing him. The Devil, who was later revealed to be the arch-demon Mephisto, agreed to make the pact. However, there was one condition: One day he would return to collect his fee for curing Crash. Life continued on and nobody knew of the pact Johnny had made. Crash Simpson, on the other hand, felt as if he had nothing to lose. He didn't know of the pact that Johnny had made in order to save his life. Therefore, he decided to make an attempt to perform a breath-taking stunt: a giant jump over twenty-two cars. However, Crash did not make it. Instead, he and his vehicle crashed upon the ground and he died.

Johnny Blaze becoming the Ghost Rider

After Johnny Blaze saw Crash die, his world had crumbled down, he did not think that life could get any worse. Just as he thought that the Devil appeared. Johnny began yelling at the Devil and telling him that he double crossed him, but the Devil stated that he had cured Crash Simpson’s disease and that he wanted to claim his reward. With that statement heard he declared that Johnny Blaze would become his Emissary in the dark hours and in the light he would join him in Hades. The pact was made, by day Johnny Blaze would walk among the living, but by night he became the Ghost Rider. During the day Johnny Blaze performed in his traveling stunt show along with Roxanne Simpson after the death of Crash.

During this time Johnny would perform his stunts as the Ghost Rider with the audience all believing it to be some great special effects. However they were not effects but it was the curse of Mephisto, and his evil demons were constantly sent to ambush the Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze and his loved ones. Coming to the decision that he had put Roxanne through too much torment and suffering Johnny left to allow Roxanne to live a normal life.

Creation

Ghost Rider made his first appearance in Marvel Spotlight #5, 1972 by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, and Mike Ploog. Then was re-introduced in Ghost Rider volume 2.#1, 1990 by Howard Mackie and Javier Salters.

Concept Evolution

Zarathos

During this time Johnny Blaze became the stunt man for his friend The Stunt Master on his TV show in Los Angeles. At this time he discovered that he could not only turn into Ghost Rider at night but whenever there was evil around. Whilst in Los Angeles, Ghost Rider also joined forces with The Champions of Los Angeles to battle the evil forces in the city. However after a few months of fighting alongside The Champions he discovered he was too much of a loner to battle with them, so he left The Champions forever.

Soon after, the demonic half of Ghost Rider was exerting more and more control over his actions and personality and Johnny found dealing with his normal life harder and harder. He later joined the Quentin Carnival to perform his motorcycle stunts with fellow rider Red Fowler. Whilst traveling with the carnival Ghost Rider battled Centurious who managed to stir the memories that Johnny had wanted to forget. It was later revealed by the demon Nightmare that the demon who'd bonded with the soul of Johnny Blaze was called Zarathos.

Johnny and Zarathos battled for dominance within Johnny and eventually Roxanne Simpson returned to request the help of the Ghost Rider to battle Centurious once again. In doing this Johnny was able to imprison Centurious and Zarathos within the Crystal of Souls and no longer would Johnny Blaze become the Ghost Rider, as he was free at last of Mephisto's curse. He eventually married Roxanne and together they had children, Craig and Emma.

Enter Danny Ketch

The ancient being known as Caretaker approached Naomi and told her that both her eldest son Johnny and her youngest son Danny would both become a Ghost Rider. Caretaker offered to help safeguard Naomi’s children, which she agreed to, and faked her own death, going into hiding while she sought out a way to lift the family curse of the Ghost Rider. Naomi allowed the Caretaker to place Dan and Barbara in the care of a widow named Francis Ketch who lived in Cypress Hills. Naomi would watch over her children for some time until in a battle with Mephisto she lost her life.

The spirit of vengeance

Dan and Barbara were too young to remember that Barton and Naomi were their real parents. Dan had a normal childhood, expressing an interest in motorbikes at an early age. Dan’s best friend and eventual object of his affections, was Stacy Dolan. Danny’s bond with his sister was especially deep -- the two were fairly inseparable well into their late teens. One Halloween night, Danny and Barbara took a shortcut through a graveyard...Barb had convinced Dan to take her (in hopes of seeing Harry Houdini's grave). Reluctantly, Danny agreed and they went on.

On their way through, the two saw a man called Deathwatch killing a man and taking his briefcase. Barbara screamed at the sight of the man dead on the floor and the screams attracted the attention of Deathwatch and his men. The two tried to escape but one of Deathwatch’s men managed to shoot Barbara in the chest with a crossbow causing extreme injuries. Dan carried Barbara off to hide in a nearby junkyard.

While hiding, Dan noticed an unusual motorcycle. Looking brand new and out of place among the wreckage, the motorcycle seemed to call out to Danny. Danny, his fingertips dripping with Barbara’s blood, reached out and touched the motorcycle. The contact between the bike and innocent blood spilled activated the piece of the medallion of power within Dan and transformed him into the living spirit of vengeance, the Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider easily defeated Deathwatch and his men, and took Barbara to the hospital. Unfortunately, her injuries were too severe, and she fell into a coma.

Early Days

Ghost Rider's primary target in the early days was Deathwatch who was competing with Kingpin to find a group of canisters. He also came across various gangs in the Cypress Hills area. One of Deathwatch’s employees, Blackout, a mutant who believed himself a powerful vampire, would fight Ghost Rider many times; in one of these fights Ghost Rider would badly burn and disfigure Blackout's face. Since then Blackout has had a strong grudge against Ghost Rider.

Later, Blackout would find out Ghost Rider’s secret identity and take revenge on him by killing Barbara in her hospital bed. After Barbara’s death, Dan became more withdrawn from the people who loved him and started to take his mission of vengeance more seriously. Dan started fighting more powerful foes such as Zodiak, Scarecrow, NIghtmare, Snowblind, and the anti-hero Suicide. He would fight the Brood alongside with the X-Men. Later on he would finally defeat Deathwatch stabbing him in the heart causing a major explosion at his headquarters.

Major Story Arcs

Rise of the Midnight Sons

All the media attention surrounding the new Ghost Rider caught the attention of Johnny Blaze, the previous Ghost Rider. Blaze tracked down Dan, believing that Zarathos was free again. Johnny shot Dan at point-blank range with a shotgun, but instead of shooting bullets the gun began producing hellfire. This surprised Blaze, who thought he had lost his Ghost Rider powers when Zarathos was captured in the soul crystal.

Dan was badly injured by this and barley survived the encounter. Dan convinced Johnny that he was not Zarathos. Together he and Johnny defeat Blackout who was killing the Morlocks. Johnny would stay with Dan in order to watch over him and help teach him about his powers. The two would team up helping Spider-Man defeat Hobgoblin, Venom, Demogoblin, and Hag and Troll who tried to bring Deathwatch back from the dead. Blaze was worried about his younger brother's welfare and was happy with the spirit Noble Kale that was bound with Dan.

During sometime, Blackout became under the rule of the FIRM and was hired to capture Ghost Rider. He met up with Dan and he bit Dan in the neck, draining him of all his blood and killing him. However while Dan was dead, the Ghost Rider spirit took over. During this time, the Spirit of Dan would talk to the Ghost Rider through the spirit world. At one point he warns Ghost Rider of the rise of a powerful demon known as Lilith, the mother of demons, who appear to take over the world with her demon children the Lilin. Around this time, the Caretaker re-emerged. Together Ghost Rider and Blaze would search different areas to find the members of the Midnight Sons, the earths only defence against the occult which was seen in the vision. During the battle of the Midnight Sons and the Lilin, Lilith creates a demon version of Dan and sets it out to attack the Midnight Sons but the demon is easily stopped. Together they defeat Lilith and her children and ally of the Midnight sons Doctor Strange brings Dan back from the dead.

Return of Johnny Blaze

Vicious Cycle

After weeks in hell, Johnny continues to try to escape but to no effect. Tormenting Ghost Rider became Lucifer’s favourite pastime. Lucifer taunts Ghost Rider by letting him have a free run at the exit from Hell while being chased by demons. For weeks Ghost Rider would race towards the gates of hell only for Lucifer to snatch it away from him at the last second.

It was one time too many for Ghost Rider who proceeded to pound the ground in anger. Hidden under the ground was a small, short sighted demon called Greexix. Ghost Rider is about to kill the demon but Greexix tells him there is a way out of hell but before anything else could be said Lucifer’s men capture Greexix and take him to their master. Ghost Rider decides to rescue Greexix for him to show him the way out but Ghost Rider planned on leaving Greexix behind because frankly he hates demons.

Ghost Rider finds Greexix being escorted back to the pits. Ghost Rider saves Greexix and makes a break for the pit. Ghost Rider out runs the demons and then does the impossible: he jumps the pit of hell and lands on the other side safely. Greexix leads Ghost Rider to a cave but this cave has water in it [water in hell] this was the way out of hell, Johnny has planned leave Greexix in Hell but just as we was about to leave Lucifer appeared and grabbed Johnny just as he was escaping.

Johnny rides again

Johnny plummets towards earth with Lucifer clinging onto the back of his motor bike (Ghost Rider is unaware of this). As Ghost Rider plummets to earth on his bike, Lucifer breaks up into 666 different pieces, known as Shards. The shards then find hosts that have been dead for a small amount of time. By doing this, the shards gain some of Lucifer’s powers like super strength, stamina, and some fire control. As the shards are destroyed, the power possessed by that shard is transferred to the remaining shards until there is one left. It does not matter which shard is left, because no matter what it will be, Lucifer at his full power. Ghost Rider lands on earth and for the first time in months, he transforms into his human form. Due to his stint in Hell, Johnny’s bike had no fuel and is forced to walk the long high ways while towing his bike along with him.

Luckily for him a trucker woman named Dixie spotted him and tried to help him, but Johnny thought that she was Lucifer in disguise and started to attack her. When he did not transform into Ghost Rider automatically, he realized he was wrong. However, before he can retreat Dixie pulls a gun on him and kicks him in the balls. She feels that she can’t just leave him in the middle of nowhere so she says she will give him a lift to the nearest gas station, however, Johnny can’t bring his bike because there is no room, so he's forced to leave his bike.

At the gas station Ghost Rider comes face to face with his first shard of Lucifer(Ghost Rider does not yet know about the shards). The shard had possessed a recently dead grandfather, who had kidnapped his family and planned to blow them up. Johnny sensed his presence and transformed into Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider takes advantage of Lucifer’s weakened state and beats him. Unbeknownst to Ghost Rider, Lucifer had poured gasoline all over the van and had planned to blow it up but the woman inside the van tries to start up the van, which causes the van to explode, killing the family and the shard of Lucifer. Before Ghost Rider could react he is teleported to a grave yard.

Sorry Doc

It was revealed that Doctor Strange had teleported Ghost Rider so that he could tell Ghost Rider to stop his path of vengeance against Lucifer. Ghost Rider thinks that it’s Lucifer in disguise and the two begin to fight. Ghost Rider quickly gains the upper hand with his powerful attacks, but out of anger Doctor Strange unleashes one of his most powerful spells on Ghost Rider seemingly killing him. Unknown to everyone, including Johnny himself, Ghost Rider had obtained some new abilities and had become extremely powerful. Doctor Strange thought he killed Ghost Rider but he wasn't aware that Ghost Rider couldn’t die. Ghost Rider rose up out of the crater, and with chains coming out of his chest caught Doctor Strange and pulled Ghost Rider closer. He unleashed his brother’s (Danny Ketch) signature and the most powerful of all the Ghost Rider’s attacks, the Penance Stare.

Ghost Rider soon realized that he had the wrong man, but before he could stop the Penance Stare, he had killed Doctor Strange. Ghost Rider tried to bring Doctor Strange back to life, but he was unable to. Luckily for Ghost Rider and Strange, the angel known as Numecet, was watching the fight. She was also Doctor Strange’s friend and managed to bring him back to life. She also told Ghost Rider of Lucifer’s plan and that he had used Ghost Rider to get to Earth because he’s the only being in existence who can travel between Earth and Hell. She also told him that Lucifer clung on to the back of Ghost Rider’s bike and when they entered our dimension, Lucifer split into 666 shards of himself and fell to earth. Now he wants to be complete again and Ghost Rider must stop him.

Ghost Rider calls his motorcycle and begins to hunt the remaining shards down. Ghost Rider catches up with four shards of Lucifer riding motorbikes, causing trouble with the police. Ghost Rider be-heads three of them with his chain but the last one says it has something to show him. Ghost Rider follows the shard. The shard leads Johnny to where Johnny was born and raised, the Quentin Carnival. Johnny has mixed feelings about this and is lead to his trailer where he and Roxanne lived with their children, Craig and Emma, all those years ago. The Shard wants to talk to Ghost Rider but Ghost Rider refuses and unleashes a massive hell fire blast destroying the Shard and the Carnival, only leaving an old bible which belonged to Roxanne. Ghost Rider then leaves in search for more Shards.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Johnny finds himself in Sleepy Hollow tracking a powerful shard of Lucifer, who was on a killing spree of decapitated children. It turned out that the murderer is Jack O'Lantern, who was killed by Punisher before while he was attacking Spider-Man during the Civil War story arc, but now was possessed by one of the Lucifer Shards. The local sheriff had thought that Ghost Rider was responsible for the killings but later realized that it was the demon-possessed super villain. The two fought Jack O'Lantern together. Jack O’Lantern was no match for Ghost Rider, and Ghost Rider was able to rip out the essence of Lucifer out of his heart and smashes his pumpkin head to kill him.

Ghost Rider Vs the Hulk

Ghost Rider takes on Hulk

Ghost Rider continues his pursuit of the shards of Lucifer, which leads him to an airport where Lucifer has possessed a pilot and planned to crash the plane. Luckily, he was stopped by Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider rips the front of the plane off which causes a massive fire. The shard of Lucifer gives Ghost Rider a dilemma, kill him or save all the innocent people on the burning plane. Ghost Rider wanted vengeance to be served but Johnny wanted to save the innocents, but in the end they didn’t do either and had to flee.

Johnny wakes up on the highway the next day. On the embankment of the high way, Johnny and The Ghost Rider start talking about how Johnny should not interfere. Ghost Rider and Johnny disagree. While talking, Johnny notices a lot of cars coming out of New York, and goes to a nearby café so he find out why. While there, he sees the Hulk and his Warbound. Johnny wants to go and stop the Hulk, but Ghost Rider says it’s not their affair. Johnny wants to help and forces the Ghost Rider to transform. Since Johnny was in control and not the Ghost Rider, they have limited power.

Johnny arrives in New York and confronts the Hulk, but doesn’t have the skill or full knowledge of their power to defeat the Hulk. Ghost Rider offers to take over so they can have access to all of the power and destroy the Hulk. However, Johnny wants to prove himself and declines the offer. The Hulk jumps off a skyscraper, aiming for Ghost Rider. He lands on Johnny making a massive crater, with Johnny at the bottom.

Here We Go

Overlooking the battle was Doctor Strange and Mr Fantastic. Reed asks if Ghost Rider can beat the Hulk, and Doctor Strange replies that Ghost Rider is a wonder of mystic design and that Ghost Rider’s powers are boundless and Godlike. Because Johnny is fighting the Hulk, not the Ghost Rider, the Ghost Rider’s powers are limited (while when the Ghost Rider is in control, the power is boundless and Godlike). At this point, Johnny is kind of a safety switch, and when he senses that the Ghost Rider has taken control he yells “The safety is off Reed. Johnny Blaze controls the Ghost Rider no more!!!”. As the Hulk looks down the crater, the Ghost Rider takes control and unleashes a massive hellfire explosion. The Hulk is in the middle of this blast and is in a great deal of pain. Ghost Rider comes up out of the crater on his bike but he does not fight the Hulk. When he rides away, this comes as a surprise to everyone watching except Doctor Strange who says: “The Ghost Rider avenges the innocent , which we, all of us are not (referring to the Illuminati)”.

Revelations and Johnny’s revenge

Johnny has an idea that fools the Devil himself. He discovers shocking revelations about Ghost Rider’s origin and the nature of his Godlike powers. First he gets it on with Dixie. Ghost Rider cranks up the heat on his mission to destroy every shard of Lucifer he could find, he also comes up with a plan to reduce the devil’s power for their final battle. Every time Ghost Rider destroys a shard of Lucifer, the power that shard possessed was passed on to the remaining shards. His idea was to find an avatar that was brain dead, but alive. Since it's brain dead the other avatars can’t sense it and since it's alive, it still possesses its power and will still gain power when other avatars are killed. Johnny found the perfect scapegoat for his plan when he had a collision with an avatar and the avatar is impaled through the brain by the gear stick. Ghost Rider took the avatar back to the motel that he and Dixie where staying in, and placed it in the back of her truck. The plan relied on Dixie killing the avatar around the same time Ghost Rider killed the other last remaining avatar.

While this is happening, the avatar that escaped the plane crash [see above “Ghost Rider Vs the Hulk], some how became the owner of an American Football team that was going by the name of Jack Daniels. Outside Heaven, two brothers, who were angels, where planning to get back into heaven as well as on God's good side by destroying the rest of the shards of Lucifer. They wanted to do it themselves but needed the help of the Ghost Rider. The two angels, called Emmael and Vraniel, needed a woman to bring them into the world as their mother, so they picked a woman called Darlene. They came to her in a dream, telling her that she had been chosen for a great privilege. Jack [the avatar] reveals his plan to blow up a full stadium of people and asks if there is any way around the legal drinking age so that even the children go to Hell. Ghost Rider finds the avatar and starts beating him up. Before he can destroy him, the avatar tells him about another shard that has possession of a baseball coach that has his team held hostage in a barn house.

Ghost Rider makes the decision to go and save the innocent children first. By now, Darlene has given birth to the angels and they are nearly fully grown and are now near Ghost Rider. They say good bye to Darlene and go to find Ghost Rider. They find Ghost Rider fighting two more shards of Lucifer disguised as an old couple. The angels watch on as Ghost Rider destroys one of them with a hellfire blast and the other shard tries to make a deal with Ghost Rider. If he allows it to be the last shard to remain alive (the shard did not know about the brain dead shard Dixie was keeping), it would tell him where the children are. Ghost Rider agrees and learns where the children are. However, instead of letting it roam around freely, Ghost Rider ties it up to a bridge in hopes that it will still be there after he’s finished with the other shards.

Emmael and Vraniel, hoping to get on Ghost Rider’s good side, try to beat Ghost Rider to the barn where the children are being held. Unfortunately for them, Ghost Rider is already there fighting the shard of Lucifer. Ghost Rider accidentally sets the barn on fire with the children still inside. Ghost Rider has the shard of Lucifer tied down and states that he's never run out of chains. The shard points out the burning barn to Ghost Rider, but before any thing can be done the angels reveal themselves and say they have saved the children. The shard recognizes the angels and before he can say anything one of the angels throws an energy spire and destroys the shard. Ghost Rider is uneasy about the angels joining him.

Ghost Rider travels back to the Football ground to destroy Jack Daniels. Jack is about to blow up the stadium, but the plan is foiled, because the stadium is evacuated due to a fire alarm set off by Ghost Rider when he entered the building. Ghost Rider finds Jack after a brief walk. The shard threatens to blow up the building but Ghost Rider points out that if he blows up the building that he would kill himself then he would go to back to hell, which would end all of his plans. Ghost Rider gets the bomb remote and is about to blow up the stadium himself [the explosion would not effect GR] but the angels arrive and try to fight Jack but then one of them collapses.

The Shard offers to tell Ghost Rider a secret but the angel tries to stop him. Ghost Rider gets frustrated and ties them both up in his chain. Ghost Rider uses his Penance Stare on the Angel and discovers a revealing secret. Ghost Rider is not a demon but in fact an Angel, a piece of God’s wrath. The Shard also tells Ghost Rider that he could never have kept Ghost Rider in Hell for long, but he used him to get out of Hell. He also tells Johnny that it was not him who was bound to the Ghost Rider, it was a renegade angel Zadkiel. Ghost Rider kills the Angels and the Shard.

Now there are only two Shards of Lucifer left and one of them was laying brain dead in Dixie’s motel room. Everything was working according to plan, but there was a problem. The owner had called the police, who arrived and were outside her door waiting to storm the room. Meanwhile Johnny is traveling to face the other Shard he left tied under a bridge. The Shard, who is now more powerful, broke free. As Ghost Rider and the shard begin to fight, Johnny reveals that the Shard is only half as powerful as it thinks it is because the other Shard is still alive. Johnny finishes the fight with a massive hell fire ball, and at the same time the police have stormed the room and are about arrest Dixie. The Shard quickly wakes up and the police start shooting at it. They eventually kill the Shard, but they also hit and kill Dixie. Ghost Rider takes it in his stride and starts his hunt for Zadkiel.

Eventually, Blaze and Ketch reunite, reaching Heaven to fight Zadkiel. Aided by the combined forces of the past Spirits of Vengeance, the two brothers defeat and crush the renegade Archangel, with God Himself condemning the traitor to the pits of Hell to burn for eternity.

Powers and Abilities

Ghost Rider is the supernatural combination between human host and experienced motorcyclist Johnny Blaze and the demonic Zarathos. As the Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze possesses a variety of supernatural powers.

Demonic Transformation: Johnny Blaze possesses the supernatural ability to transform into the Ghost Rider at will. Originally, he would automatically transform at night or in the presence of evil. Recently, however, he has gained control over his transformations and can transform through an act of will or when innocent blood is spilled. It has recently been stated that Johnny Blaze and the Spirit that was supposedly the Ghost Rider, is in fact an agent of heaven. The power of the Ghost Rider depends on who is on control over the Ghost Rider (Effectively Johnny's body. Johnny and the spirit inhabit the same body, and while transformed Johnny is in control for the majority of the time, but if he losses focus or control the power of the Ghost Rider and the Spirit regaining control is likely to occur. While the Ghost Rider is in control, Johnny Blaze only influences it's decisions to an extent as he takes the "back seat" to the spirit as describe). As said by Dr. Strange, Johny Blaze is simply a mortal and acts as a built in safety, that severely limits the power of the Ghost Rider. Dr. Strange also stated, that when Zarathos takes possession of the Ghost Rider, the Ghost Rider's powers are, for most intents and purposes, boundless and "God Like". Johnny Blaze is one of the strongest and most powerful being on planet, while the Ghost Rider, is for all intent's and purposes described as boundless in power to the extent where the Ghost Rider was able to defeat Dr. Strange in battle; the Ghost Rider is one of the most powerful beings in the Universe.

  • Superhuman Strength: The Ghost Rider possesses superhuman strength sufficient to lift up to 25 tons.
  • Superhuman Stamina: The mystical energy that empowers Ghost Rider prevents his muscles from producing fatigue toxins during physical activities, granting him limitless superhuman stamina.
  • Superhuman Durability: Johny Blaze is highly resistant to the point of being basically immune to all types of earthly physical damage as he has taken blows from beings such as an enraged World War Hulk with no sign of pain or discomfort, had his entire skull destroyed and regenerated instantly without any discomfort, and only supernatural or divine attacks or weapons can cause discomfort or harm to the Ghost Rider. The Ghost Rider is capable of withstanding great impact forces, temperature and pressure extremes, powerful energy blasts, and falls from great heights without sustaining injury. As his bodily tissues have been transformed, leaving only a skeleton, most projectiles such as bullets simply pass through him or bounce off his bones. Ghost Rider's body is for all intents immune to physical injury, as he is evidently not able to feel pain and is able to survive with no apparent discomfort no matter how severe the injury (Unless a weapon forged from Heaven itself is used against him).
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Despite his invulnerability to conventional forms of injury, objects such as weapons forged in heaven by the arch angel Zadkiel, can actually harm the Ghost Rider to a certain extent. However, if his being is damaged, the magical energies imbuing him allows the Ghost Rider or Johnny Blaze to instantly regenerate any and all damage done, even to the point of fully regenerating lost limbs in moments, and regenerating his skull after it was destroyed in seconds without any discomfort or any evident pain.
He can control and project hellfire in limitless amounts
  • Hellfire Manipulation: Ghost Rider possesses the ability to generate, control, and project mystical fire, or "hellfire" at will. Hellfire is an emphyreal and supernatural flame that burns the soul of a person and can be used to burn their physical body. He can utilize this fire in various ways, including projecting it from his eyes, hands, mouth, or even channel it from his body into his weapons like his shotgun, form walls of hellfire, and even create structures such as a motorcycle completely out of hellfire and brimstone. He can also unleash the hellfire in omni-directional attacks that are incredibly powerful.
  • Mystical Chain Projection: Ghost Rider wields a mystical chain that is capable of growing in length, cutting through almost anything, and transforming into other weapons. He can also spew and project chains from his mouth or chest at will.
  • Penance Stare: Ghost Rider possesses the supernatural ability to cause any individual who stares into his eyes to see and feel every single bit of physical or emotional pain they have ever inflicted on anyone in their entire lifetime.
  • Miscellaneous: Ghost Rider, particularly Zarathos, has randomly demonstrated other powers from time to time, some of these include crossing planes of existence, telekinesis, healing, elemental manipulation, and even creating a hellish lightning storm that rained fire, etc.

Danny Ketch

Daniel Ketch was attacked by gangsters whilst with his sister, Barbara. He ran away, finding a motorcycle. Upon touching it, he was transformed in to Ghost Rider. Although Daniel then beat the gangsters, they beat Barbara in to a coma. Blackout, one of the leaders of the gangsters eventually killed Barbara in the hospital because of what Daniel had done to them. Daniel scarred Blackout's face with hellfire as an act of revenge.

Enter Daniel Ketch

Danny was killed twice. First, when he was with the Midnight Sons, he was killed by Blade who was possessed by the The Darkhold, but was later resurrected by the Darkhold Redeemers, along with others that were killed by Blade. And lastly, when he fought Zarathos, but was again revived.

It was later revealed that Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze are brothers and are inheritors of the curse of the Spirit of Vengeance. Eventually, Danny seemed to die, but the Spirit of Vengeance within him lives on. But in another issue, Danny is shown to be alive and is bonded with the Noble Kale Ghost Rider.

His last adventure would draw him into Hell and confront its ruler, Blackheart to make a deal. Danny would marry two demonesses of Blackheart's choosing and Blackheart will break the curse in Danny's family bloodline. When one of the succubus tried to kill Danny with a bone knife made from Zarathos, but failed. Blackheart appeared and explain to Danny that he planned this all along to rid himself of the Noble Kale bloodline and also destroy his soul. Danny would later fight and kill Blackheart and he would eventually become the King of Hell. [for more info see Danny Ketch page]

Return

Danny was now an addict and has recently returned in the pages of Ghost Rider. Danny is currently working for the renegade angel, Zadkiel, and is hunting down the Spirits of Vengeance around the world so that he can steal their powers. He believes he is doing this for the good of the world, but also becomes addicted to the power which grows with each spirit he absorbs. Johnny and a few other Ghost Riders from around the globe band together to stop Danny. Johnny helps Danny beat his addiction and see through Zadkiel's manipulation. They then set off together as the spirits of vengeance.

Powers and Abilities

Dan is one of the most powerful beings on earth and is probably the most powerful Ghost Rider next to his elder brother Johnny. Dan’s soul is bound with his ancestor Noble Kale, who was the first ever Ghost Rider. Noble Kale is Marvel's incarnation of the Angel of Death/Judgment. He had a compassionate side and while there were times that he seemed tempted to simply take over completely, he refused to do so. Kale and Ketch, like Blaze and Zarathos, could sometimes communicate through dreams, and in at least one issue, communicated via messages written on a mirror in lipstick.

When Dan transforms into Ghost Rider he has immense powers. One of these is the Penance Stare, which is arguably his most powerful attack. The Penance Stare makes his victim feel the pain and suffering they ever inflicted on other people. Dan can choose the intensity of the power of the Stare from killing them to giving them never ending nightmares. However to use the Penance Stare, Ghost Rider must lock eyes with his victim. The Penance Stare can get through most things protecting the victims eyes [glasses, helmets, ect], however, it could not get through Venom's symbiote because it acted like an second pair of eyes. Also for the Stare to work the victim must have a soul.

Ghost Rider has the ability generate Hellfire (the fire that engulfs Ghost Rider’s body and surrounds his head). He can generate and project Hellfire in unlimited amounts causing massive Hellfire explosions. He often just throws it in hellfire balls at his opponent which has destructive effects. Dan can also choose what effect the Hellfire have as it can just burn the flesh or the soul or do both. Dan has great control over Hellfire even redirecting Zarathos' Hellfire blast back at him. Hellfire can burn through almost anything and is the product of God’s rage.

Dan possesses a magical chain that can take the shape of almost any weapon he can think of such as a spear or just a normal chain. The chain can also grow to any length and hellfire can be channeled through it.

In the recent issue’s of the current Ghost Rider series, Dan is one of the more powerful Ghost Riders and now he can leech the power of weaker Ghost Rider’s adding to his own power. This process also gives Dan all the victims' memories.

Medallion of Power

Ghost Rider

The Medallion of Power existed on Earth before the fall of Atlantis. During a time, when man relied on the supernatural for protection and power, the Medallion was coveted by Zarathos. He sought to use the mystic power of the Medallion to take over earth. The ancient group opposed Zarathos, who's purpose was to protect the Medallion of Power, called Blood, allied themselves with the old spirit of vengeance. They fought and the spirit of vengeance managed to capture Zarathos in the medallion, but at a cost. The spirit of vengeance was also captured in the Medallion. The high member of the Blood, called Caretaker, decided the Medallion was now too powerful for one person to possess alone. He decided to break it into pieces and placed them in the souls of the descendant of two human families, the Kale family and the Badilino family. The pieces can be activated by powerful supernatural beings such as Doctor Strange and Mephisto. The pieces are actually pieces of Zarathos and the spirit of vengeance that when activated transform the descendants into the living spirit of vengeance, Ghost Rider. When a piece holder dies, their piece is bound to not the next in line but the person after that, i.e. Naomi Kale's [mother of the true and current Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze] piece has been bound to Johnny's son, Craig Blaze.
