Off THEIR Mind: Comic Creators On Who the Next Bat-Villain Should Be

Even the pros are fans and like to speculate over who they'd like to see on the big screen.

As we all wait for any bit of information on the next Batman film, one of the biggest questions we all have is who should the next villain be? Rather than get our thoughts on this, Comic Vine thought, why not ask a few comic book professionals (who are also comic book fans) who they want to see as the next big screen Bat-villain? We contacted a few pros to give us their top picks.

No Caption Provided
Keep in mind this is in no way any official confirmation or endorsement for the next Batman movie. This is just the thoughts of some really cool people who just happen to work in the comic book industry.
 == TEASER ==
Mark Waid (Editor-in-Chief BOOM! Studios, writer: Irredeemable, Incorruptible, Amazing Spider-Man, Kingdom Come):

I'd love to see Catwoman in the next Batman movie. Given where the character was left-- a true vigilante, a wanted man skirting the law--it'd be fascinating to cast Catwoman as his opposite number in that world, a bad girl tempted to do good.

Jeph Loeb (Executive Vice President, Marvel Television, writer: Ultimate X, Hulk, Superman/Batman, Batman: Hush):

Batman has sooo many...  Catwoman revised through Nolan's eyes would be my first choice.
Solomon Grundy would rock.  And it'd be awesome to see Hush!

Mike Allred (Artist/Creator: Madman, I Zombie,  Wednesday Comics, X-Statix, Catwoman):

The best have been done. More than once too. I think Man-Bat would be very interesting, or Clayface.

Mel Caylo (Marketing Manager Archaia Entertainment):

I think Christopher Nolan has done a stupendous job with reinvigorating the Batman movie franchise, and his interpretations of Ra’s al Ghul, the Scarecrow, Two-Face and the Joker in the first two movies have renewed my excitement for the Dark Knight on film. I know the Riddler is rumored to appear in the third installment, but the villain I would most like to see show up is Catwoman, and not because I’d like to see a beautiful actress suit up in shiny patent leather—well, ok, maybe a little. Rather, I’d most like to see Nolan’s interpretation of Catwoman/Selina Kyle because he is so good at transforming these outlandish, flamboyant and over-the-top comic book characters into a real person with depth—an individual with an agenda with a reason for their madness. With all due respect to Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, I think audiences have been waiting for a better cinematic portrayal of the feline seductress, and I, for one, hope the filmmakers heed my request!

Jim McCann (writer: Hawkeye & Mockingbird, Dazzler, Return of the Dapper Men):

I think Bane would be pretty cool, but he'd have to be funded by someone, maybe Hush?  Harley Quinn is pretty great too, but without the Joker may be tough to intro to a film audience...

Jimmy Palmiotti (writer: Jonah Hex, Random Acts of Violence, Time Bomb, Countdown to Final Crisis, Catwoman, Power Girl):

No more supervillians...the latest movies established as close as we should get to costumed villains. I think the next film should be about Batman having to deal with there being no reason for Batman to exist because the police have become so efficient...so Batman haunts a new town in South America that thinks he is a demon where he takes down drug lords.

What do you think about their ideas? Have their thoughts changed your opinion? When do you think we'll find out who the next villain will be?

I think it should be Hush for the simple reason that he can torture bruce on various levels and match him in intellect and some what hand to hand combat.

I would love to see the Riddler in Batman 3, but I think  that the Nolans and David Goyer should use a new villian never seen before in the films. Black Mask or Hush would make an excellent new main villian, both have a history with Bruce Wayne as childhood friends, I think they should bring in Catwoman to have some sort of relationship with Bruce/Batman. Bane and Manbat could be good for minor villians, Bane could be hired from Black Mask or Hush to kill Bruce Wayne but instead fights off against Batman, or ManBat could try and frame Batman as he terrorizes Gotham.

Catwoman- A must
Black Mask or Hush- Main villian
Bane or Manbat- Minor villian
Riddler- My favorite villian after the Joker, but idk to obvious, he could make a cameo apperance or something.

If they did poison ivy i think they should make her like a beautiful, plant loving, sweet girl and also a sexy, violent, destructive girl kinda like two-face in some sense. Instead of what they did in Batman and Robin or whatever movie she was in; she should make like huge gigantic plants to kill and destroy; they should be as tall as the buildings of Gotham. And her appearence (im not just saying this because i am a guy) but she should have like dark hair with a green tint with dark lips and not red, and she should be naked wrapped in vines unlike the green suit thing Uma Thurman wore

Catwoman or Bane. Why is everbody saying Bane should work for someone? He didn't work for anybody in Knightfall and he did "break" the bat. It would be a perfect match for the third movie. Although I probably wouldn't like it since I didn't care for the first of Nolan's 2 movies.

Clayface and Bane

Clayface is a former actor who has the power to shapeshift... It would definately make things difficult for the world's greatest detective..especially if he becomes you.

Bane is the man who broke the bat...need I say more

Personally, I think Nolan is going in a great direction so far with the series, I believe that Hush would be a great villain to have, Nolan stated he wanted to do villains that have never been done on film, and since Hush is relatively new, he would make a great villain, with Batman on the run and his reputation ruined, this would be the perfect time for Hush to strike and push Batman farther than the Joker ever did, and intro Jason Todd and then kill him in the first two minutes. That would be great. And I really love   Jimmy Palmiott's idea to move him to South America, I think that would be a great post-Nolan Batman franchise  OR just have Batman fight a Predator, I'd watch that.

I would like to see Harley Quinn as the main villain. It would have to be the next movie though, with her as an obsessed Joker fan angry that he was put away.  I've always thought Harley has the potential to be a solo villain.

I hope that they include Catwoman but as a morally grey character.  Im not sure really who i want as the villain of the film to be though id like to see a good version of poison ivy and in a "nolanverse" film i think she could be really dark but the more logical villain would be Harley but not like the cartoons id want her to be more like the Arkham game.

I think it would be interesting to see a villain topping Batman with technology and equipment. Beat him at his own game. Killer Moth would be a good choice. Inspired by Batman to be his evil equivalent, bringing balance to Gotham. Another one I would love to see is Mr. Zsasz but as a 'side-villain'. They won't do that though because you can't do Zsasz with a PG13.

Zsasz Was in the First Film If any one else was paying attention, So using him would be a great tie in since he was just a brief gimps.

The following link if for those who would choose to argue that he was in the film :

http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0000270/

Tim Booth was Zsasz

The thing that is kind of funny is that about 80-85% of people seem to only see Batman movies for the bat-villain/s & the other 15-20% actually just care if the movie is just good & don't care who is chosen for the bat-villain role. I read Jonathan Nolan finished the script over at another forum though anyway, so I guess not much of a point debating anymore. Now it's just a test of patience.

I think Riddler is a great choice for the next movie
since we'll be dealing with the fallout from Batman's exiled status after the last movie, it would make sense to have a villain who is all about tricking the Bat into following his clues and baiting him out into the open.
also, he's another great, cerebral villain
and like Joker and Scarecrow before him, we know how well that seems to work in the Nolanverse
I also think Pengiun should be in it, more as an arms dealer or as a shifty club owner, not so much a "supervillain" per se
but I think he should be in and would help to round out the cast pretty well

Catwoman is 100% necessary but not as a villain.

It's not her swagger or her costumes or her vaguely S&M relationship with Batman that's the reason, it's because she turns the mirror on Bruce beautifully with the dynamic they share. I vote for a gritty, street Catwoman, her more recent arcs have established she was orphaned and sent through the system living in juvenile hall while being the subject of abuse and anguish all the while.

So no courtesan Selina or casual temptress Selina, Catwoman was primarily brought in to the comics in the first place to be a reflection of Batman. Except unlike Bruce she's streetwise and had to rise in the ranks by being more resourceful, the result could come out QUITE cool if played out right. She needs the humor, the wit, and the toughness though along with finesse, finesse, finesse.

my first choice is to do a big screen adaptation of "knightfall" so bane..but since all the villains that are shown in the comic haven't been established yet in the nolan-verse it might not work, so my nest choice is the riddler (played by johnny depp of course) or black mask

@Midnight Monk: I agree with having a big bad like Hush or Black Mask with a "minor" character like Catwoman (similar to Batman Begins with Ras and Scarecrow). However, I'm against the Riddler being in the film. It's too obvious in my opinion.

As far as Mr.  Palmiotti's comment is concerned, I think it's a good one. Since the last Batman movie ended with Batman an outlaw, then maybe the police are his "villain"? And like the BTAS "Over the Edge," maybe the police hire assassins to get rid of Bats? It'd be a good way to wrap the series up.

I would love to see the CLASSIC ANARKY as a "villain". The one fighting the reasons of crime and against the law and the other one fighting crime and for the law. Plus Joker or some other real insane character with a lot of henchmen forcing the two to fight together and batman philosophing about his useness.

I think people have forgotten that Victor Zsasz was a minor role in Batman Begins...so he could logically be brought in.

The most logical places to go would be bringing Two-Face back in (because Harvey Dent is dead, not Two-Face), Catwoman (since the Falcone family is in there and it would work into Jeph Loeb's stuff), or The Riddler (which would feel too much like a second-hand Joker on-screen).

Personally...I still want Mr. Freeze circa Heart of Ice storyline.  I know they've already said it won't happen, but I think Nolan could work a really interesting angle with that.

The only other villain I really want to see, even as a wink-and-nod thing, would be Solomon Grundy.

Catwoman.

Forget the S&M camp we've been pelted with thus far with Miller and such but rather Brubanker's Catwoman who was put through the system in juvenile halls, orphaned and disregarded time and time again throughout her youth. Sharp as a whip, full of finesse but not too extravagant, clever and with humility but not enough to be self-effacing...it's the only dynamic that could possibly compete with Batman's and the Joker's.

lol Jimmy Palmiotti thats is really crazy but lol its cool i think the next villian would of course have to line up with the sequence of event in the bats lifeso he would have to go against one of his old veteran enemies like riddler not the pinguin though i dont think many people like him but catwoman and a really good riddler portrayal anyone agree?

Jimmy Palmiotti don't be stupid!  - A Batman movie without a villain is like .... I can't even think of  an anology for this because it's too damn ridiculous.
