Every week, we take a look at some of the most bizarre, exciting, and downright unique things to happen in comics. Check out our choices of the strange and wacky things that shouldn't be overlooked from this week's releases.
There may be some tiny spoilers ahead.
All Star Batman #1
Strangest Thing You'll See Batman Do
It's not often, but every once in a while, Batman will do the unthinkable--smile. In the first issue of the new series, Batman is thrown into a packed diner. The customers are startled, but he looks at them and tells them everything will be alright while smile and winking. That just might be scarier than whoever Batman is fighting.
Best New Bat-Gadget That Won't Fit in the Utility Belt
Batman has a lot of things in his utility belt. Just recently we saw the group known as the Colony trying to take an inventory of everything inside.
In this issue, Batman makes use of a chainsaw. We think the image of him with it is pretty cool, but it'd be pretty hard to keep one in one of the pouches on his belt.
All-New, All-Different Avengers Annual #1
Strangest Example of Avengers Fan-Fiction
Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) was a huge fan of the Avengers before she gained powers and became part of the team. One of her pastimes was writing Avengers fan-fiction. Much to her dismay, she discovers others have been writing their own and are expressing their own desires for the heroes' behavior.
Best Advice Everyone Should Take Once in a While
While reading things being written about her, Kamala tells herself she should get off the internet. That's something we all should do every once in a while. The real world should be experienced as well.
Action Comics #961
Best Kiss
Superman is fighting Doomsday once again. He knows there's the possibility of the fight ending with his death once again, but he needs Wonder Woman to get Lois and their son, Jon, to safety. Before he heads after Doomsday, he gives Lois a super-kiss. Don't worry, he's not making her forget everything like he somehow was able to in Superman II.
All-New X-Men #12
Messiest Kiss
Wolverine and Angel just finished fighting a bunch of goblins. You can see they're covered in goblin guts and blood. That doesn't stop them from admitting to each how much they understand and care for each other once the fight is over.
Detective Comics #938
Best Ending to a Fight
Batwoman and the others went after Batman after he was grabbed by the Colony. As they're making their way through the base, they send in the muscle to clear a path for them. The soldiers aren't too impressed to see Cassandra Cain on her own. She quickly teaches them why they should have been impressed and concerned.
Deadpool and the Mercs for Money #2
Best Inappropriate Comment
Deadpool and the Mercs are on a mission in Vietnam and their contact is a guy that now looks like a gorilla (Gorilla-Man). When they arrive at a temple, Deadpool explains they're not tomb raiders but soldiers of fortune. He wonders if he they should refer to themselves as guerrillas, but Gorilla-Man doesn't think that's a good idea.
Superwoman #1
Best Way to Protect a Secret Identity
It's often questioned how Clark Kent could protect his secret identity with just a pair of glasses. In the 80s, Superman would vibrate or move his face at super-speed so it would appear blurred in pictures or videos. The new Superwoman does the same thing.
Spider-Man/Deadpool #8
Best Suggested Phrases to Use When Busting in on an Enemy
Spider-Man and Deadpool have tracked down a rotten and evil guy. As they bust into his secret base, which is a giant glass house, Deadpool suggests some opening lines for the battle to Spider-Man.
Is "Heeeeeeeee's Johnny" really too old to use?
New Super-Man #1
Worst First Impression With Potential Teammates
The new Super-Man of China is a bit of a jerk. In his defense, he is just seventeen. Just after gaining powers, he's introduced to Wonder-Woman and Bat-Man. He doesn't have nice things to say to them.
Old Man Logan #10
Best 2-Page Spread With 32 Panels
Old Man Logan is doing what he does best. He's trying to escape a well while a big jerk is shooting arrows at him. Check out the two-page spread showcasing the scene.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns #2
Best Light-Construct to Take Out an Enemy
With their power rings, Green Lanterns can make pretty much whatever they can think of. When Hal Jordan is facing off against a couple of Sinestro Corps members, he makes a giant semi to knock one of them down.
The Amazing Spider-Man #16
Best Classic Spider-Man Homage
1966's The Amazing Spider-Man #33 features one of the most iconic Spider-Man moments. Spider-Man was trapped in an underwater base that was taking in water. Aunt May was dying in the hospital, and he retrieved a serum that could save her. Just when he was about to give up, he found the strength needed to overcome incredible odds to free himself. This week's Amazing Spider-Man features a show of strength very similar.
The Flintstones #2
Best Stone Age Appliances
With stores like Bone Depot and Tarpit, the folks in Bedrock are starting to buy things they don't really need. We see a few new appliances Fred and Wilma pick up for the home.
