Current Events

After the events of Murder World (Avengers Arena), a confused and seemingly amnesic X-23 was found by Kitty Pryde in Florida just before being attacked by the Purifiers. After the altercation, X-23 was brought to the New Charles Xavier School for Mutants where she recovered quickly and has since joined the group of X-Men being led by Cyclops.

Origin

The twenty-third attempt to recreate Wolverine, X-23 was conditioned to be the perfect weapon with her skills as an assassin to be sold to the highest bidder by her creators the Facility.

Creation

X-23 was created by writers Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost and first appeared in the television series X-Men: Evolution, in season 3 episode 10, which first aired August 2nd, 2003. She appeared again in one more episode and grew in popularity and ended up becoming a canon immigrant to comics, not unlike Harley Quinn. Her first appearance in comics was in NYX #3 in December 2003, written by Joe Quesada. Her move to print saw the introduction of darker and psychological elements thus making her character darker and more complex.

Innocence Lost

First breath

The organization known only as the Facility is attempting to recreate Weapon X. With all their attempts ending up failures they turn to hiring renowned geneticist Sarah Kinney who says she can give them what they want through cloning. However Sarah's attempts hit a wall when she realizes the genome they recovered from Wolverine is heavily damaged, making a pure clone little more than a pipe dream. Sarah then decides to cut corners by duplicating the X chromosome, but the Facility denies her request, stating that changing the gender of Weapon X may change the abilities of the weapon itself. In an act of defiance Sarah goes behind their backs and ends up creating a viable specimen on the twenty third attempt. While her employers are outraged, Sarah has put them in a difficult position and they reluctantly concede. However Zander Rice, who hates Wolverine for murdering his father in Weapon X, forces Sarah to carry X-23 to term. Nine months later X-23 is born. At the age of seven, X-23 is being trained in martial arts, conditioned to the Trigger Scent, and exposed to all sort of abuse in order to strip of her of any humanity and sense of self. Sarah is under orders not to treat her like a child, though she reads Pinocchio to X in secret. In an attempt to activate her mutation, Rice suggests using radiation. It works but also nearly kills X-23 and from there they go on to lace her claws with adamantium which Rice performs without anesthesia. X-23's skills are sold to the highest bidder and she becomes one of the world's most sought after assassins by the age of 11.

During one mission Rice goes with X-23 only to leave for her for dead, though she survives. Sometime later Sarah's niece Megan is kidnapped by a child molester, and she uses X-23 to rescue her but it earns her the ire of her employers. In an attempt to seize control of the Facility, Rice has X-23 murder his employer Martin Sutter and his family. X kills Sutter and his wife but spares his son Henry. When Sarah goes to see X-23 after Sutter's death, X-23 shows Sarah a photograph of Sutter and his family she smuggled and Sarah realizes what Rice has done. Sarah then decides to free X-23, but before she does Rice shows her X-24 through X-50 and Sarah is horrified at the sight. Sarah then gives X-23 orders to destroy the clones and the Facility, which X-23 succeeds in doing but Sarah is killed by X-23 in the escape. Rice had laced her with the Trigger Scent as one more attempt to torment X-23. As Sarah lays dying she gives X-23 the name Laura, tells her she's her mother, and that she loves her. Laura lies with her mother in the snow begging her not to leave her.

Target X

Sometime after the events of Innocence Lost, Laura is captured by Captain America and is interrogated by him along with Matt Murdock. They are looking for answers as to who she is. Laura begins by recounting what happened after her mother's death. Laura tries to get further away from the Facility but gets cut off by her handler Kimura. Using an avalanche Laura manages to escape and finds her way to San Francisco where she meets Debbie and Megan Kinney, her aunt and cousin on her mother's side. She introduces herself as Sarah's daughter and moves in with them. However her time with them is short lived as Debbie's boyfriend, Desmond Alexander, turns out to be a Facility agent. After accidentally getting some trigger scent on himself, Laura kills him but it's also on Megan and Debbie though they manage to get it off and Laura doesn't kill them. But things go from bad to worse when Kimura shows up to kill Debbie and Megan and take Laura back. She snaps Laura's neck, handcuffs her to herself, and takes her to watch her kill Megan and Debbie.

Using some quick thinking, Laura cuts her hand off and cuffs Kimura to a water pipe. She then cuts a gas pipe open and ignites it with a broken light bulb, though this does not kill Kimura. Laura later learns from Debbie that Sarah had told her about Laura before her death, but what struck Debbie was that Sarah showed a side of herself that she was sure their father had stolen from her. Debbie then recounts that for the longest time Sarah never loved anyone, not even herself, but Laura managed to bring that back and save Sarah. After making fake IDs Laura tearfully parts ways with Megan and Debbie but not before leaving with a locket with her mother's picture in it given to her by Megan. Laura then tracks down Wolverine to confront and kill him and herself. Laura manages to beat Logan but he talks her out of killing herself. Logan tells her he knows what happened to Laura, thanks to a copy of Sarah's letter he received from Sarah.

Logan then offers to help Laura start over, but she is captured by Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. After Laura finishes telling her story Matt tells Steve that she should be sent back to Wolverine, though Steve says she must face justice. Matt goes on to say that Laura is as much a victim as the people she's killed and that if Steve turns her over to S.H.I.E.L.D. they'll just use her like a weapon like the Facility did. In the end Steve lets Laura go and tells her to go to Logan.

NYX

In NYX Laura is a fourteen year old prostitute that specializes in cutting masochistic patrons in the employ of the pimp Zebra Daddy. She is found by Kiden Nixon and her teacher Cameron at the scene of her client having committed suicide. When Zebra Daddy learns of the clients death he assumes that Laura killed him and puts out a hit on her. After adding Tatiana Caban and Bobby Soul to the group, Zebra Daddy and his thugs manage to track them down. When Zebra attempts to kill her friends Laura kills him, and they escape.

The Uncanny X-Men

Adrift again, X-23 finds work in a nightclub in Mutant Town, and soon establishes a friendship with Jade Parisi, the daughter of a mob boss. She defends her new friend when she is being harassed by a group of thugs, ultimately killing them. This draws the attention of the X-Men, as the similarity of her powers to Wolverine's makes the murders appear to be his doing. They locate and confront her, and she reacts violently to the presence of Wolverine, physically attacking him. She is eventually calmed, and aids the X-Men in locating Parisi, who was in hiding, as well as in defeating one of Don Parisi's enforcers. She flees, but later returns to aid the X-Men in rescuing victims of a car accident, and is soon enrolled at the Xavier Institute. There, she develops extremely protective feelings towards Wolverine. During this period she briefly teams up with Spider-Man, as well as traveling to the Savage Land, where she helps defeat the Hauk'ka.

Captain Universe

X-23 briefly becomes the host to the Uni-Power. In aid of the Uni-Power, she and a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Scorpion, learn of a plot by AIM to use the Uni-Power for their own ends. The pair travels to an AIM base and learn more about their plans for the Power, before Scorpion is ordered to capture X-23. She disobeys the order, allowing X-23 to escape. Shortly after escaping the base, the Uni-Power leaves X-23.

New X-Men

Childhood's End

Following the events of House of M, Laura still retains her powers, one of the 200 to do so. She leaves the Mansion and goes back to San Francisco. While sitting alone at the Fisherman's Wharf, she receives a call from Logan, who tell her she needs to return to the Mansion. Laura is at first hesitant to do so, but concedes, much to Emma Frost's chagrin. She is roomed with Dust, though Emma tries to convince her to leave by sending her a telepathic vision of her mother to torment her. After Icarus appears bloodied and beaten on the doorstep of the institute, Emma has the powered students compete in a free-for-all brawl, with those deemed to be the best performers assigned to a new team of trainee X-Men. Despite Frost's attempts to omit her, Laura is among those students who excel during the exercise, and also receives unexpected aid from Hellion, whom Frost has instructed to take out Laura from the battle first. She is placed on the team with Rockslide, Elixir, Dust, Hellion, Mercury, and team leader Surge by Cyclops, who thwarts Frost's attempts to keep her off the team by pulling rank.

Crusade

As the depowered students and staff are leaving the school, their bus is bombed by anti-mutant religious zealot William Stryker. Laura overhears Dust talking to Icarus who had fled the Mansion. Dust intends to meet Jay, but Laura warns her that it's a trap, and takes Dust's place. Donning Dust's abayat and niqab, Laura is shot upon arriving at Stryker's compound. Laura returns to the Mansion and single handedly kills three Purifiers who have incapacitated Surge, Hellion, and Emma Frost.

Nimrod

X-23 and Hellion

When Surge receives a distress call from Forge, Laura accompanies the New X-Men. Although the team disables the Nimrod unit, Laura is grievously wounded and is unable to heal herself. In order to save X-23, Hellion convinces Emma Frost to unlock his telekinetic potential, increasing his powers (and thus, his speed) to a level thought impossible by a O.N.E. sentinel guard. This allows them to fly back to the mansion in time for Laura to be healed by Elixir.

Mercury Falling

While Laura is bonding over coffee with Cessily, who has picked up on Laura's growing crush towards Hellion, the cafe is attacked by Kimura and her minions, who in turn capture Cessily. After Laura returns to the school, she and Hellion go off to locate the Facility's whereabouts, Hellion forcibly inserts himself into Laura's mission. X-23 interrogates a man at gun point, and upon securing the information, shoots him in the head. Hellion informs her that killing will no longer be a part of their interrogation technique. X-23 and Hellion infiltrate the Facility and after an encounter with Kimura, the two soon find Cessily in liquid form, barely able to compose herself. They are attacked by Predator X who has absorbed Cessily's liquid mercury skin; X-23 and Hellion decide to fall back, but are pursued by the Predators. The group is once again ambushed, only to be rescued by the Astonishing X-Men and New X-Men. The two teams turn the tables on the attackers, and defeat the remaining facility troops. During the scuffle, the remaining Predator X escapes. Sometime later, Emma Frost finds Kimura trying to assassinate Laura and confronts her, erasing the one happy moment in Kimura's life from her memory, and psychically suggesting that Kimura's assignment now is to hunt down the remaining members of the Facility and kill them.

Quest for Magik

Searching for Magik, the demon lord Belasco brings the students to Limbo. X-23 is one of the students that are trapped there; she is seen trying to fight off her restraints. Her enhanced sight enables her to see the Institute and she tells Trance to use her astral projection powers to go to the Institute. She tells Elixir that Belasco plans to kill Prodigy, Dust, and Mercury. Afterwards, she urges Mercury and Dust to fight Belasco. The demon lord is not impressed by her attacks, and, as he declares her soul not worth taking, reduces X-23 to nothing but bones and adamantium claws with an energy blast. He later uses his magic to resurrect her, but then proceeds to torture X-23, claiming he will kill and resurrect as many of the students as he desires until Magik is brought to him. She is then revived by Elixir and at David's instructions, frees the Stepford Cuckoos before slowing Belasco's stride.

World War Hulk

X-23 goes up against the Hulk. With several other students, she pins him down, but is knocked away when he regains his strength. Attacking him a second time, she manages to blind him with the claw in her foot. However, the Hulk recovers, grabs X-23, and hurls her into the mansion, stating in what may have been a grimly sarcastic manner that he hopes she heals like Wolverine.

Children of the X-Men

X-23 and Rockslide were trying to convince Anole to cut off his other arm so it would grow back stronger. After Anole tells them no, she is later seen being interviewed by Surge about what happened to Prodigy in Limbo.

Later, the students of the Xavier Institute are trying to find out which one of them is the youngest mutant on the planet. During the meeting, Surge kisses Hellion, which upsets X-23 and she runs away. Mercury finds her in the girl’s restroom, having cut herself and trashed the restroom in a fit of rage. She wonders what is happening and does not understand what she is feeling. Mercury hugs her and tries to reassure her that she isn’t alone anymore. In the end, she is seen lying on the floor laughing and relaxing with Mercury and Dust.

Messiah Complex

Some of the New X-Men decide to launch a preemptive strike against the Purifiers. While spying on the Purifiers, X-23 manages to impress Armor with her senses. They are ambushed by the Reavers, whose leader, Lady Deathstrike mortally wounds Hellion and after a brief fight, Pixie manages to teleport the team out and are spread between Washington and the Institute.

After Iceman picks up the New X-Men, the mansion is attacked by Sentinels. He and X-23 take them out. Cyclops, realizing he has to up the stakes and get the child no matter what, decides it is time to assemble the X-Force which features X-23, Wolverine, Wolfsbane, Caliban, Warpath, and Hepzibah.

While in pursuit of Cable and the mutant newborn, X-Force battles Lady Deathstrike and her new Reavers. Wolverine sets X-23 against Deathstrike; X-23 wants revenge for Yuriko nearly killing Hellion, and seemingly kills her after crippling her cybernetic systems and her healing factor. Later, she travels with X-Force to Eagle Plaza in Dallas and then to Muir Island, the Marauders' new base. During the heavy battle between the X-Men and the Marauders, X-23 saves Wolverine's life, killing Scrambler just before he scrambled Wolverine's healing factor.

X-Force

Angels and Demons

X-23 in X-Force

After the events of Messiah Complex, Cyclops assigns Laura to X-Force which is now being relaunched as a mutant Black Ops unit that will seek out threats to mutants and eliminate them before they have the chance to act. It is led by Wolverine, and the initial line up includes Warpath and Wolfsbane. Their first mission is tracking down the remaining Purifiers and killing them with Laura's orders being to kill Matthew Risman. Before their mission begins Logan tells Laura this is her last chance to walk away, that if she does this she will go back to being X-23. Laura does not listen and Logan simply replies with, "Fine, your life." Their mission ends up getting botched due to Wolfsbane getting captured. X-Force manages to rescue Wolfsbane but she has been overdosed with heroin. Laura later says Wolfsbane should have known better which Logan gets furious at. He tells her Wolfsbane is who they die for and their lives mean nothing in comparison. When Wolfsbane, under the effects of Reverend Craig's brainwashing, attacks Angel and Elixir, Laura goes to investigate. She almost attacks but remembers what Logan said to her, she sheathes her claws and lets Wolfsbane attack her and escape. After Angel transforms back into Archangel and goes after his wings, X-Force follows behind him. They come across the Purifiers and attack. Laura manages to kill Risman but also encounters Eli Bard who has become infected with the Techno-Organic Virus and nearly kills her. In the aftermath, X-Force learns that the Purifiers have reactivated Bastion who has in turn resurrected several of the X-Men's greatest enemies including William Stryker, Graydon Creed, Stephen Lang, Cameron Hodge, and Bolivar Trask.

Old Ghosts

Following these events, X-Force learn that the humans that Bastion resurrected have been placed in key positions. While they at first are set to take them out, Cyclops instead sends them to track down the Vanisher because he has stolen the Legacy Virus from one of Sinister's labs. Archangel and Elixir are then added to the team and they go after the Vanisher in Tokyo. After also adding Domino and coercing the Vanisher into the team, they head back to the lab he stole the virus from. They manage to recover the virus but due to Cameron Hodge's soldiers attacking, Laura gets infected. She runs off to kill herself in a vat of molten metal, but Elixir tries to talk her out of it. Earlier, Archangel had remarked that the clones in Sinister's labs weren't real and this combined with her life's experiences made Laura not value her own life. Josh manages to convince her that she is real and that her life is worth living and purges the Legacy Virus out of her system.

Suicide Leper

When X-Force hears word of a mutant called Beautiful Dreamer, having killed humans whilst infected with the Legacy Virus at a rally for Graydon Creed, they are deployed to potential spots for more attacks. X-23 and Archangel get attacked at theirs when Fever Pitch explodes. Later on Hellion, Surge, and Boom-Boom get kidnapped by the Leper Queen's soldiers and infected save Tabitha. X-Force rushes into save them, but end up getting pulled into the future to hunt down Cable.

Messiah War

X-23 later moves with the X-Men to San Francisco, where they are accepted as heroes by the mayor, having rejected the Fifty State Initiative. X-23 was roomed with Armor and Pixie. Laura left behind a towel covered with blood, which the latter brought to Emma Frost. Frost stated that it wasn't Laura's blood and later brought this matter to the Cabal.

X-23 is finally reunited with Kiden Nixon, who herself makes her first appearance outside the NYX series. Sadly this future version of Kiden is hooked up to several machines and is used as a generator in order to create a temporal anomaly that disrupts time travel technology, essentially trapping X-Force (which is lethal for them if they don't return within 33.5 hours), Cable and Hope in this era. While X-23 agonizes over killing Kiden or not (Kiden herself asks for death) the matter is taken out of her hands when Domino shoots and kills her.

X-23, Domino, and Proudstar are dispatched back in order to save Boom Boom, however both Domino and Proudstar fall ill due to the time travel. Feeling grateful for saving her friend and ending her suffering, X-23 disables the time travel devices on the other two and goes back in time in order to save Boom Boom herself.

Not Forgotten

X-23 arrives just in time to stop the Leper Queen before she could kill Boom Boom out of spite for X-Force not killing her. She then collapses in exhaustion. H.A.M.M.E.R. agents then storm the building, giving medical care, while they take X-23 in for questioning. However it turns out the agents take her back to the Facility (from whom they are actually employed, as they are not really H.A.M.M.E.R. agents), much to the surprise of Agent Morales. There Laura is reunited with Kimura, who saws off her left arm. Agent Morales arrives and helps Laura to escape. Kimura is trapped under a blast door while Laura and Agent Morales find themselves in a room containing large tanks filled with the Trigger Scent. While inside the room, Laura cuts the claws out of her severed arm and gives them to Morales for safekeeping.

She lights a Molotov cocktail of sorts which sets the sprinkler system off. The Facility soldiers finish cutting through to Laura just as Kimura realizes the sprinklers are spraying the Trigger Scent everywhere. X-23 goes feral and kills all the soldiers in her way. She gets to the Facility head's office just as the sprinklers start spraying water, washing away the scent. Kimura manages to club Laura from behind and then kills the Facility head, planning on framing Laura for it. Agent Morales arrives and sets Kimura on fire to distract her while she and Laura make her escape. Morales reveals she rigged the place to explode and they get out in time. The rest of X-Force arrives and takes Laura and her severed claws home, leading into the events of Necrosha.

Necrosha

Along with the other members of X-Force, X-23 is caught in the crossfire of the events of Necrosha. She aids in the care of an injured Wolfsbane. She later joins the team in an assault on Selene's palace, killing Senyaka alongside Wolverine.

Second Coming

X-23 is shown to be part of Cyclops' "Alpha Roster" in the course of Second Coming. Laura, along with most of X-Force, accompanies Cable and Cypher to the future in an attempt to shut down the Nimrod invasion. Following Cypher successfully over-riding the programming, Laura attempts to return through the temporal portal, only to sustain horrific injuries. The portal prevents any organic matter traveling through it. This leads Cable to sacrifice himself, allowing his techno-organic virus to overwhelm him, forcing the portal open and making it possible for the team to return to Utopia.

In the fall-out of the Second Coming, Wolverine cuts X-23 from the team, citing she's been following orders all her life, from the Facility, Weapon Plus and the X-Men. He tells her it's time she made her own choices and follow her own path.

X-23

Liu's One Shot

After the events of Second Coming, Laura and Logan assist Jubilee in some missing mutant cases. Laura expresses jealousy at the difference in how he treats her and Jubilee. She then picks up the scent of her friends from the NYX gang and reunites with them. They are all glad to see her off the street but have been worried since she left without saying goodbye. At the same time Laura begins having a psychic conversation with the Gamesmaster who has taken up residence in her mind due to his attraction to the pain and the "cleanliness of her mind". He asks her what she wants, Laura says she want to be free, but the Gamesmaster says that is not what she truly wants, but what she truly wants he can give to her though Laura refuses. The Gamesmaster says he will leave her alone for now, but he will remain in her mind. After that Laura attempts suicide off a building but survives due to her healing factor. She then parts ways with the NYX gang, returns to Logan, and decides to change herself.

The Killing Dream

X-23

X-23 begins having apocalyptic nightmares involving a demonic Wolverine asking her to be his "right hand in hell." Due to this, she sleeps outside so as not to cause any alarm among her roommates. However, this creates a rift between her and her former teammates, who are now wary of Laura due to her having been a part of X-Force. The only ones who side with her are Dust and Hellion, the latter of whom she tells that she has missed, making Hellion pleasantly surprised as the two share a brief moment. However, Surge's antagonizing of Laura forces Cyclops to intervene. He then tells her to visit a halfway house in San Francisco for former mutants who are trying to live normal lives, however, as she steps into the building, she suddenly experiences a vision similar to her dreams with the building on fire and her surrounded by dismembered corpses.

A flashback opening the second chapter of "The Killing Dream" shows Wolverine and X-23 at a theme park. While they are preparing for the roller coaster to launch, Wolverine states he's adopting her as his daughter. When brought back to the present, the fire was implied to be started by the devil possessing Wolverine. He meets X-23 in the hospital and seemingly "kills" Hellion before diving into her mind. He tries to convince her to join him as his queen in Hell. X-23 finds her inner "light" and banishes him from her mind. She awakes to find that there is blood everywhere but she and Hellion are fine. She also notices a symbol on her hand (part of a long mystery). The X-Men are perplexed about her situation and want her to stay so that they can "fix" her, but Gambit convinces them otherwise. X-23 silently visits Hellion's room (unaware that he knows she's there) before she leaves Utopia.

Songs of the Orphan Child

X-23 begins her journey towards self-discovery. X-23, flanked by Gambit, encounters a young girl named Alice and witnesses her murder, though the next day Alice appears to them somehow alive. Encouraging them to follow her to a peculiar desert laboratory, Alice introduces them to her employer/owner/adoptive mother: Claudine. Revealing herself openly to X-23, Claudine explains that Alice is also a clone, fourth of a series of five created by Essex as another experiment alongside several other children that live in the complex. She then expands upon her own origins, stating that the process of becoming what she is left her with vague, but invasive memories of Essex's life and that as a malignant presence within her mind, he is slowly killing her as a means of self-resurrection.

He even manages to manifest briefly before being re-absorbed back into her. Claudine then incapacitates Gambit and straps X-23 to a peculiar chair, stating her aim to switch their bodies - thus inheriting Laura's healing factor, something she'd wanted after her stabbing, and thereby freeing herself of Essex. The plan backfires when Essex in fact controls Laura's body and uses her to mortally wound Claudine again. Laura manages to overcome Essex's presence in her mind, expelling it through force of will. Laura, Alice and Gambit manage to escape the laboratory as it collapses and arrange for the children to be given new homes before setting off on their journey again. However in the wreckage left behind, Claudine is still alive, although just barely and is being watched over by the fifth Alice Clone - the new host of Essex.

Collision

X-23 and Gambit arrive in Madripoor in pursuit of Malcolm Colcord, a man that wants to revive the Weapon X program that created Wolverine. After letting Daken go to save a street kid from thugs, Gambit suggests they go to Tyger Tiger for assistance. With Tyger's help they manage to get in touch with Daken. Daken is at first in disbelief that Laura is a clone of Wolverine. Laura reveals her claws to Daken and the two fight. Daken berates her for coming to Madripoor and remarks that they are nothing alike. The two square off until Daken decides to offer his assistance, which Laura rejects. When Daken confronts Colcord about his plans to restart Weapon X, he reveals his subterfuge to leading X-23 and Gambit to Colcord though this turns out be a ruse as well, as he incapacitates Gambit and helps Colcord capture Laura.

Daken learns about Laura's past from Colcord and assists in her escaping from her cell. He remarks that Laura is a construct to which Laura retorts that he is just like her. Just like the Facility made Laura into a weapon, so did Romulus to Daken, to which responds that he owns his own fate. The two then enter a brief mutual alliance to destroy Colcord's new project. Before they part ways Daken asks Laura why she does not seek power when she could easily have it. Laura remarks that what she has to prove has nothing to do with power and then asks Daken why he seeks more power when he already has it. Daken remarks that power is all he has. Laura's encounter with Daken makes her realize that she owns her fate and can do with it what she wants.

Touching Darkness

X-23 and Gambit travel to Paris after the events in Madripoor, in pursuit of the person that has bought the Trigger Scent that sends her into a berserk rage, and the genetic DNA of X-23 and Daken. Gambit has discovered that X-23 still causes bodily harm to herself. His paternal instincts cause him to call Wolverine to Paris to help console X-23.

Wolverine arrives at X-23 and Gambit's hotel room, with Jubilee as company, whom X-23 nearly attacks because of the scent of a vampire on her. Wolverine and X-23 converse on top of the hotel roof about her mental state and Logan gives her advice about filling her heart with better memories. Gambit states that she maybe bent, but not broken as many others have suggested. Gambit also questions Wolverine about why he never treated X-23 with the same compassion as Jubilee. Wolverine admits that he didn't make the right decisions with X-23 and is going to make attempts to rectify it for both X-23 and Jubilee.

X-23 and Jubilee are walking on the streets of Paris, and are harassed by a group of men. Jubilee manages to get the group to leave them alone. X-23 then slits her own neck, thereby arousing Jubilee's vampire instincts and attempts to gorge her fangs into her. Jubilee tastes X-23's blood with her tongue and witnesses the violent visions of Laura's memories. This causes Jubilee to fight her temptation and overcome the blood lust.

Jubilee questions X-23 if offering her blood was a twisted joke and attempts to hit her in anger, but the punch is stopped due to X-23's reflexes. Jubilee explains that despite being a predator, she wants to keep the remaining shards of her humanity intact. She decided to leave Utopia because the people she once considered friends are now afraid of her, to the point of wanting to kill her. X-23 empathizes with her because she was born and raised to be a killer, and murder is the only way she knows she's alive. X-23 left because she couldn't just become someone new that easily, especially with the others watching and judging. Jubilee questions why X-23 offered her blood, and her reply was to see if Jubilee would give in to her predatory impulses, but there was a hidden agenda in her answer, presumably suicide.

Gambit receives a call from a Paris criminal underworld contact about an arms auction in Paris that is selling a trigger scent. Later in the night, X-23, Gambit, Jubilee and Wolverine infiltrate the weapons auction. They are unable to find the woman in charge of the auction. X-23 picks up a scent and runs towards an elevator, and shuts it before Jubilee can get in. A mysterious voice that X-23 recognizes and is a person on her kill list is speaking to her via intercom. The voice says to her that the scent has been upgraded and now anyone can be affected by it, but X-23's rages are special. X-23 becomes affected by the scent as the elevator arrives at a subway. Before X-23 starts a killing spree on the civilians, Jubilee crashes in, attempting to subdue her, but to no avail, as X-23 tries to kill her. Jubilee pushes X-23 onto the train tracks just as a subway car is coming towards both of them at full speed.

At the last second, Jubilee leaps and tackles X-23 from the speeding train. X-23's leg is run over, but she bends back in position and attempts to continue her assault on Jubilee. Gambit and Wolverine intervene to calm X-23's rage. Wolverine takes the full impact of her blows stating that he is not going to give up on her. Gambit manages to get X-23 to remember who really cares about her. X-23's rage disappears and she apologizes to the group. They then get attacked by civilians exposed to the Trigger Scent but manage to keep the damage to a minimum. Laura then comes across the woman she had been tracking and she parts ways saying that they will discuss Laura's future the next time they meet.

Afterwards Laura recounts that the woman seemed familiar to her but she can't remember how. Gambit says he'll put the word out to his contacts and he'll find out the woman's identity. Jubilee then takes Laura away to the Eiffel Tower where the two solidify their friendship. They end with Jubilee jumping down and Laura following after her, smiling.

Chaos Theory

While having a dream of a mysterious symbol, Laura wakes up in a cab as she and Gambit are in New York. The two later meet with Cecilia Reyes, as Gambit was bleeding from his groin, and X-23 left him in Cecilia's care while she went to search Alex Cimini for information. As she finds him in a lab on the University Physics Department, she instead leaves him alone and departs. Unknown to her, a bright light appears in the lab Alex was in. While walking on the street, Laura sees the same symbol from her dream in the sky and on a man, as an earthquake starts and the building near her collapses. As Laura is helping an elderly woman from a few stories floor, Spider-Man appears and helps bring them down. Laura and Spider-Man later see the symbol appearing in the sky, and both realize that they have been dreaming the same symbol. After the two help save civilians from the collapsed building, Laura and Spider-Man are approached by Reed Richards, Susan Storm, and Ben Grimm. The Future Foundation then bring Laura back to the Baxter Building to run some tests and discover her emitting energy signatures were responsible for the earthquake. Later, a device shows Reed and Valeria that Laura, Spider-Man and Sue are all emitting the same energy signature. Spider-Man realizes that the energy emanating from them is involved with the Uni-Power that changes beings into Captain Universe. While discussing even further, Valeria activates the device and Laura, Spider-Man and Sue are transported to an alien world, where they are confronted by monstrous warriors.

After being killed, it turns out that they only witnessed their deaths. They are confronted by the Enigma Force which all three of them had previously been a host to. The Enigma Force then tells the story of how once he was Prince Wayfinder, and millions of years ago he sealed away the Whirldemons in the Microverse, but became the Enigma Force in the process. Afterwards Sue and Peter disappear but Laura remains, the Enigma Force mentions that she is different from his other hosts and remarks that it is because she learned the power of choice.

When Laura comes to, she sees the Future Foundation in combat with the man she saw earlier but he reveals himself to be the Whirldemon king. Laura aids in attacking him and seemingly defeats him, but the King has moved to possessing Valeria who is looking to open a portal to the Microverse. Laura then bargains with the King to be his host, which he accepts. At first it seems the King is in control but Laura leaps through the portal and traps the king in the Microverse. Humiliated, the King promises that he will keep torturing Laura for the rest of eternity but notices the mark on Laura's hand. He recognizes it as the Mark of the Star Sword, indicating the Enigma Force has plans for Laura. Laura then somehow accesses the power of Captain Universe and manages to defeat the Whirldemons and return to Earth.

Misadventures in Babysitting

X-23 is allowed to babysit the Richards' children. The children go behind X-23's back and accidentally unleash a dragon, which X-23 attempts to defeat. Hellion arrives to speak to X-23, but all four(X-23, Hellion and the children) are teleported to a space junkyard where they are confronted by the Collector, who wishes to add X-23's claws to his collection. She and Hellion are able to rescue the children and defeat the Collector and arrive back at the Baxter Building before the Richards' notice anything is amiss. After leaving, Hellion tries to rekindle their relationship and then kisses her, but Laura rejects him, saying she no longer wants him. Later on Laura talks things over with Gambit, she admits that Hellion still means something to her, but she doesn't have the same feelings for him that she used to. Gambit says people change, sometimes relationships get stronger for it and sometimes they die and you just have to let go. She spends the night at one of Gambit's apartments to find Jubilee, who tells her she must choose a side of the Schism.

X-Men Regenesis

Wolverine asks X-23 to join him; she replies by asking if there is any other choice. While she thinks about what choice she will make, X-23 goes for a walk with Jubilee and asks her why she chose Cyclops's side. Jubilee tells her she chose to stay with Cyclops because, as a vampire, she can hear the heartbeat of everyone around her, and it makes her hungry and wants to eat them. X-23 tells her that she will not hurt them but Jubilee tells her that the urge is there and that she needs to fight as much she needs blood. She cannot be with Wolverine because she is afraid to violate his new philosophy: if you are a kid you do not fight, and he still sees her as a kid. X tells her that Logan sees her the same way, they both agree that it sucks. X-23's phone rings as the others need an answer, but they ignore it and Jubilee tells X-23 to go and have some fun and dance. X-23 explains that she cannot dance, but Jubilee tells her it does not matter because she is hot. X-23 tells her she is not hot.

However, as they go, someone follows them. While Jubilee dances, X-23 becomes distracted by looking at someone and recognized him as the person who took over Zebra Daddy's operation. She and Jubilee attack him and his men and take the girl who was with him. She knows where the other girls are and how to free them. As they think about what to do with the girls, because they cannot just call the police, the Black Widow and some S.H.I.E.L.D. agents appear and take the girls to help them. Natasha offers X to come to the Avengers Academy and she accepts. The next day she tells Logan what happened, and Wolverine tells her he is going to miss her and he is sorry he could not do better by her. She tells him she is going to miss him too, then she takes a motorcycle and drives to the Academy.

Avengers Academy

Following Fear Itself, X-23 appears as one of the students at the new Avengers Academy. The Academy sees she does not need any combat training after she fights Tigra. After she introduces herself to the other students, she explains to Mettle the difference between killing an innocent and killing to protect an innocent, telling him that he is not a psycho killer, and that they can talk more about it another time. This makes Hazmat feel jealous. Finesse becomes friends with X-23 due to their lack of emotion. Finesse also stands by X-23 when she opposes the X-Men locking their students on the Academy grounds during Avengers vs. X-Men. However, their friendship takes a turn for the worse when Jeremy Briggs tries to release a superhuman cure. With X-23 being exposed to the cure, she loses her healing factor as a result and is slowly dying of adamantium poisoning. After Briggs knocks out X-23, he tries to burn her with acid, but Finesse grabs X-23's arms and fatally stabs Briggs in the radial and femoral arteries, making him bleed to death. X-23 at first thinks she is responsible, but when she finds out it was Finesse, she is furious. X-23 says she has always been forced what to do and constantly used as a weapon, and by Finesse doing what she did, she was no better. X-23 agrees to keep Finesse's secret of murdering Jeremy Briggs, but declares they are no longer friends, upsetting Finesse.

Venom: Circle of Four

X-23 comes to Las Vegas hunting someone who purchased a vial of her blood, which later turns out to be Blackheart. She then discovers that more clones of her have been made, but these ones have symbiotes. They break out and attack her. X-23 then "joins" Venom, Red Hulk, and Ghost Rider but Blackheart - using a magic mirror - makes them face their own personal antithesis, which for X is a demonic blonde peppy cheerleader called X-666. X-666 tells Laura that unlike Laura she's nuanced, having two sides to her personality, something Laura does not due to her upbringing. Bleeding from injuries she's sustained, Laura makes her way to Blackheart's throne room and attempts to kill him, but Blackheart offers to tell her whether or not she has a soul. Laura accepts the offer and Blackheart says that she can't be suffering in Hell if she doesn't have a soul and kills her. Thanks to Mephisto, Laura gets put into a dream where Wolverine comes to her rescue and she manages to defeat Blackheart.

She then happily tells Wolverine she's found out she has a soul, to which Logan responds he could have told her that. Logan then reveals that Blackheart was behind the Weapon X program and Laura enthusiastically suggests destroying it. Then Mephisto turns the dream into a nightmare by having Wolverine get exposed to the Trigger Scent and causing Laura to kill him, but he reveals that was a ruse. Mephisto then makes Venom, X-23, Red Hulk, and Ghost Rider an offer. If they perform a service for him the future, he'll give them another chance to stop Blackheart, which they all accept. Upon returning to Earth, X-23 goes to assist Johnny Blaze, but gets ambushed by Gari Oyle who turns her claws to dust and critically injures her. But thanks to an assist from Flash they manage to beat Gari Oyle and reverse the mechanism opening the portal to Hell. In the aftermath Daimon Hellstrom notices pentagrams on Venom, Red-Hulk, and X-23 which he later reveals to Venom mean that they have been marked as heirs of Mephisto.

Avengers Arena

X-23 was amongst 16 teenage superheroes, alongside fellow Avengers Academy students Hazmat, Juston Seyfert, Mettle, and Reptil, who were kidnapped by Arcade and subjected to a 30-day long deathmatch with only one survivor. When some of the teens attack Arcade, Laura is one of the few who stand back and watch Arcade defeat them, with the help of new powers. After Arcade kills Mettle to start the games, Laura, along with Reptil, are seen to be consoling Hazmat.

When the night attacks start three days into the game, Cammi notes that the attacker purposefully sits out Laura's watch. Laura's footprints are one of the three pairs seen by Darkhawk after the night attack hits the Academy camp. Cammi follows her footprints out into the snow quadrant and ambushes her, but lets her go when she realize that Cammi was not responsible for the attack on Juston and his Sentinel Mark IV.

After Runaways Chase Stein and Nico Minoru join the Academy camp, Laura is seen gorging herself on the fruit from Nico's enchanted tree. However, the alliance is shattered when Reptil is badly burned in a fire. Laura is one of the first on the scene and blames Chase, whose Fistigons are capable of projecting flames and he was in the woods when Reptil was attacked. The two groups ultimately go their separate ways, but not before Hazmat destroys Nico's food tree.

Later on, when Arcade announces that he's placed a supply crate with food, medicine and weapons in the desert section of Murder World, Laura and Hazmat attempt to carry the injured Reptil there via a sling. When he wakes up, Reptil tells the two that it wasn't Chase who attacked him, but rather Death Locket. The trio continued slowly towards the supply crate, but were separated when Hazmat stepped on a land mine that flooded the area with Trigger Scent. This sent Laura into a frenzied state and she attacked her friends, who managed to escape when Reptil transformed into a pterodactyl and carried Hazmat away to another safe zone.

After this Laura decides to search the desert quadrant for Juston, who was still missing at this point. Searching Sentinel's wreckage, Laura finds Juston still alive, albeit crippled from the waist down. She then helps him to repair his sentinel into a massive battlesuit, and follows him as he searches for those responsible for the death of his sentinel and his paralysis: Death Locket and Apex, a Braddock Academy student who possessed the power of technopathy and the culprit behind the nightly attacks. When Juston finds the two, he attacks them and chases them into another group of survivors, consisting of Nico, Chase, Cammi, and Braddock Academy students Nara, Bloodstone, and Anachronism. Apex, whose body was now under the control of Katy's twin brother Tim, stopped the assault. The group tied him up and listened as he explained his powers and shared body with Katy. When a vote was called over whether they should kill Tim, and thereby save themselves Katy, or let him live, Laura was one of five teens who voted not to kill him.

However, Katy managed to escape from the group, killing Juston and taking Death Locket and his sentinel with her as she fled into the snow quadrant. When Nico, who had been keeping watch over her, woke up from a blow to the head, Laura was the person she went to. Believing a quick assault could end the threat before Katy had a chance to regroup and come after them, Laura tore off into the snow after her. Unfortunately, Katy saw her coming and used her new sentinel to defeat and nearly kill her. Katy then went after the others, who were only able to escape after Nico opened a portal to somewhere else. This heroic act cost Nico her life, but allowed, Aiden, Cammi, Cullen, Laura, and Nara to escape to the same safe zone as Hazmat and Reptil.

Once she regained consciousness, Laura noted that the trigger scent that had doused Jenny and Humberto had worn off, which prompted Jenny to hug her. Perplexed by her overwhelmingly cheerful attitude, Laura questioned Humberto about what happened. He replied that she had given up after the combined trauma of Mettle's death, his own injuries, Laura's attack, and two weeks of waiting for something else bad to happened to her. After Cammi convinced Humberto to talk Jenny, she asked who would join her in returning to Murder World and helping Nico defeat Kety, who should have followed them through the portal but didn't. Laura was the second person to agree with her in going back.

Unfortunately, when the group arrived on mainland, things went from bad to worse as the group fragmented. Reptil took to the skies to scout out their terrain but never came back down, Hazmat ran off into the woods claiming to see Mettle, Laura followed Hazmat while Cammi, Aiden, Nara, and Cullen wandered in a big circle. When Jenny and Laura caught up with Mettle, it turned out to be a robot built by Arcade which doused Jenny in trigger scent a second time and prompting another attack from Laura. She was later seen with bloody claws on the beach where she attacked the Cammi and the surviving Braddock kids, leaving Jenny's fate unclear.

Nara and Aiden ran from her, but Nara tripped on the sand and fell. Aiden stayed back to help her, but was almost killed by Laura. Realizing that his crush was about to die, Cullen removed his Bloodstone Ring, which kept his parasitic monster side in check, and transformed into a Glartrox, a mystical parasite which bonds with a human host. The monster then attacked Laura, nearly killing her and sending her deep into the woods and away from the beach. The timely arrival of Reptil, Chase, wielding the Darkhawk Amulet, and Nico, reborn and powered up after her battle with Apex, Death Locket, and a controlled Chase, prevented Cullen's monster half from completely killing her.

Jenny, suit broken, radiation and blood leaking, crawled through the forests and stumbled onto Laura's unconscious body. The presence of a trigger scent-doused target woke Laura up and sent her after Jenny. The two fought, with it looking like Jenny was about to be killed. Luckily for her, Aiden, blaming Laura for Nara's death at the hands of the Glartrox, attacked Laura. He brutally attacked her with his axe and knocked her off of Jenny. Laura was kept alive only by the timely interruption of Reptil, who headbutted Aiden in his triceratops form. Laura, meanwhile, was last seen lying prone on the ground, healing from the damage dealt to her by Aiden's axe swings and Jenny's radiation blasts.

Laura remained this way while the finale of Murder World played out on the nearby beach. When the adults arrived, after Death Locket killed Apex with Tim in control, Laura was seen being loaded onto a stretcher by S.H.I.E.L.D., watched over by Wolverine.

Rejoining the X-Men

An unspecified time after the events of Murder World took place, Kitty Pryde, now teaching the time-displaced original five X-Men at the New Charles Xavier School for Mutants, encountered Laura being attacked by the militant Purifiers. However, Laura had no memory of Kitty, or even of her own status as a mutant. She tried fleeing from both Kitty and the Purifiers, but the former gave chase. When she caught up to Laura, Kitty phased her into the sewers in order to escape arrest by the police, at which point Laura's sweater and hat fell off, revealing that she was bald, and she unsheathed her claws.

She was next seen awakening at the New Xavier School, housed in an old Weapon X facility. Confused she ran outside in order to get her bearings, followed by the young Cyclops. The two discuss where they are and how Cyclops appears to be so young. While talking, Jean Grey reads her mind and learns about the events of Murder World and she also learns that Scott has a crush on Laura. She tells him that she can track the Purifiers who attacked them and is seemingly about to cry after being reminded of Professor X's recent death when Scott suddenly hugs her. This unsettles Laura, and she pushed him off but seems to appreciate the gesture.

Kitty, Laura, and the original X-Men then track the Purifiers to a church in Ocala, Florida and learn that this particular group is being lead by the son of William Stryker. The X-Men attack the Purifiers and things seem to be going well until Jean senses that Stryker's son is going to do something, but the warning comes too late. He unleashes a mysterious wave of energy which knocks out Kitty, Laura, Jean, Scott, Bobby, and Henry. Angel is unaffected by the blast, as he had fallen through one of the churches stained glass windows. The Purifiers capture the unconscious mutants, as Stryker's son praises God.

Powers and Abilities

As a clone of Wolverine, X-23 possesses most of his mutant abilities at strength levels rivaling, or occasionally exceeding, his own. Notably, she possesses an accelerated healing factor that allows her to regenerate damaged tissue and has allowed her to regrow limbs in the past. This healing factor is believed to be superior to that of Wolverine's, due to the fact that, apart from her claws, the rest of her skeleton has not been coated in adamantium. Though theoretically mortal, her healing factor renders her exceptionally difficult to kill. It also renders her immune to most diseases and chemicals. A side-effect is her superhuman durability and endurance, as well as her longevity, which is expected to mirror that of Wolverine. She also possesses superhuman senses, which are sensitive to ranges much greater than those of baseline humans. Notable are her senses of vision, audition and olfaction. She is also superhumanly agile and has above average reflexes. Like Wolverine she has retractable bone claws which have been coated in adamantium. Unlike him she has two in each arm and one in each foot.

X-23 has received extensive training in armed and unarmed combat, and is an expert in a number of martial arts, as well as in the performance of black ops missions. She is an expert assassin, and has had espionage training. She possesses a facility for languages, and has displayed the ability to speak English, French, Japanese and Arabic with some degree of fluency. It is possible that she speaks other languages that have not yet been displayed. X-23 is also very intelligent, and presumably has a detailed knowledge base in anatomy and torture.

Despite being incredibly hard to kill, X-23 does have her weaknesses. The Facility created a specific chemical called the Trigger Scent in order to make her kill targets she was unwilling to kill. The Trigger Scent sends X-23 into berserker rage, in which she can't distinguish friend of foe and kills everyone she sees. She is weak to powerful energy blasts as well She shares some common weaknesses with Wolverine due to her nature as a clone. Due to the lack of an adamantium skeleton, X-23 is more susceptible to decapitation than Wolverine. Her healing factor can be bypassed a few ways; it can be overtaxed, making it harder for her to heal; Carbonadium introduced into the system is poisonous and can stop healing factors if not hinder them to a near useless level; also, the Muramasa blade is a weapon forged from a portion of Wolverine's soul, and it slows down healing factors.

Alternate Versions

GeNEXT

X-23 appears in this alternate future as Professor Kinney, who is responsible for training the next generation of X-Men. She is shown to be capable of overpowering them despite her size and the fact that there's only one of her. She appears relatively youthful, indicating that her aging has been slowed by her healing factor.

X-Men: The End

In the future presented in the X-Men: The End series of books, X-23 is an adult, and a prominent member of the X-Men and the X-Treme Sanctions Executive (XSE) X-23, M, and Iceman are sent to Hong Kong to locate and capture the renegade XSE member, Sage. However, Sage uses her considerable espionage skills to ambush X-23, attaching a mysterious collar to her neck that temporarily overwhelms X-23. Sage removes the collar and attempts to flee just as Iceman arrives and freezes her in ice, allowing the group to safely take her into custody.

X-23, Marvel Girl, M, and Wolverine are sent by Cyclops to locate the whereabouts of Mister Sinister, Gambit, and the missing Summers and LeBeau children. The group finds Sinister's hidden base but are immediately immobilized by an attack from the Ladies Mastermind. The team members live out fantasy existences until Wolverine breaks them free of the mind control. Charging deeper into the base, the group fights against Sinister's Marauders to save the children. Later, X-23 and the X-Men travel to Shi'ar space, and a massive battle ensues. She is one of the very few X-Men who survive and is seen attending to Kitty Pryde's speech at the end of the story.

In this reality, it is shown that she is in love with Fantomex, and it is revealed during an illusion caused by the Ladies Mastermind that her dream is for them to be married as a normal suburban couple with a daughter.

She-Vengers

In the New Amazonia Universe, X-23 is part of a female-only Avengers, where she uses the name "Wolverine" and fights alongside Ms. Fantastic, Spider-Woman, and the White Phoenix.

League of Losers

X-23 features in an arc of Robert Kirkman's Marvel Team-Up (vol. 3), featuring a group of C-list heroes dubbed "The League of Losers". A group of heroes including X-23, Darkhawk, Dagger, Spider-Girl, Gravity, Sleepwalker, Speedball, and Terror Inc. (although Araña dies along the way) go to the future to prevent the villain Chronok from stealing Reed Richards' time machine; Chronok came to the present after already having killed all of Marvel's major heroes.

It's revealed Chronok is from the same time period as Kirkman's Mutant 2099; the group stays with him and his mentor Reed Richards to wait for Chronok, and during this time X-23 sparks a relationship with Gravity. They defeat Chronok, but at the end of the story, Richards reveals they cannot go back to their present, due to time travel and alternate timelines. The group decides to stay in the future, satisfied with the impact they made, however unnoticed. Mutant 2099 suggests reforming the Avengers or the "Fantastic Nine".

Due to the Marvel Universe's method for resolving time travel paradoxes, this story occurred in an alternate universe.

Age of Apocalypse

In the 2005 miniseries X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, a version of X-23 was revealed to exist in the Age of Apocalypse, going by the name Kirika. She was found in one of Mister Sinister's labs after it was liberated by Magneto. At the end of the miniseries, it was revealed that she was the daughter of Weapon X (Wolverine) and Mariko Yashida. Unlike her Earth-616 counterpart, she has three claws on her hands; the metal was grafted on by Magneto, and he did so on her request.

She is killed during the events of "The Dark Angel Saga" by the now crazed AOA version of Wolverine as her team and X-Force from Earth 616 try to free Gateway.

This version is considered X-23 in name only and is really more of an amalgamation of Laura and her foster sister Amiko Kobayashi.
