Farwind is correct. The hammer was actually supposed to look like the Hammer wielded by The "Thor" of The Heroes Reborn storyarc with the long handle, but Loki wouldn't have none of that.
This is a subject that will continue until the end of time. The Bottom line is this: Stan Lee created Thor to be the Strongest Hero in the Marvel Universe, but subsequent writers looking to make a different mark have attempted to change it to fit their own personal(selfish)needs.
I don't think that Galactus will be that far out of reach for Thor if he simply has The Odin Force and Rune magic. If you've been paying attention to what Fraction is doing to Thor, Odin was more than able to stalemate Galactus recently. Also even Tom Brevoort recently said that on any given day Galactus, Odin and The Celestials are all pretty much equals. If Thor is amped up(Odin Force and full Rune knowledge), Galactus doesn't stand a chance. Sorry.
