Thor Odinson is the All-father of Asgard /God of Thunder, offspring of All-Father Odin & Elder-Goddess Gaea. Combining the powers of both realms makes him an elder-god hybrid and a being of no perceivable limits. Armed with his enchanted Uru hammer Mjolnir which helps him to channel his godly energies. The mightiest and the most beloved warrior in all of Asgard, a staunch ally for good and one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse/omniverse. Thor is also a founding member of the Avengers.
Don't know why in the comics, but it probably relates back to its origin norse mythology.
It's a long story involving dwarves and Loki. Loki made a bet with a dwarf that the dwarf couldn't outsmith another dwarf. When Loki realized he was going to lose the bet, he did everything he could to sabotage the dwarfs creations. He was partially successful, resulting in Mjolnir having a shorter hammer. (This is an incredibly shortened version of the story in norse paganism)
Farwind is correct. The hammer was actually supposed to look like the Hammer wielded by The "Thor" of The Heroes Reborn storyarc with the long handle, but Loki wouldn't have none of that.
Loki sabatoged it cause he's a dick. according to some storys :P in others Odin weilds it to kill Loki's father which would mean it was that short long before loki's adoption
I know after Thor had defeated those who sit above, and ended ragnarok he went into some type of deep sleep or something, anyway sometime later he was reborn when Don Blake got the hammer. His costume had changed as well as the hammer's handle length.
