Should we boycott the Sochi Winter Olympics to protest homophobic Russian government policies?

Should we boycott the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics in order to protest the rising tide of homophobic policies by Vladimir Putin's government?(Full disclosure: I am straight)

My view is basically YES- we most definitely should! To argue otherwise is to argue that sport should be separated from politics- an argument so hackneyed and specious that it can apply for its own free pass and Social Security payments- as we saw with the Berlin and Moscow Olympics( 1936 and 1980) and even with the Los Angeles and London ones(1984 and 2012), the host government almost invariably (whether it be dictatorship or democracy) uses the very fact of hosting the world's most prestigious sporting event to promote itself propaganda wise, never mind the "Black Power salute" by African American athletes at the Mexico City Olympics and apartheid era South Africa's long standing exclusion from international sport until the downfall of the white minority government.

It may very well be that even a boycott of the Sochi Olympics will not compel Putin's government to "see reason" on this matter of LGBT rights and political freedom( shades of Pussy Riot) as it is notoriously difficult to get Russian governments( Czarist, Soviet and post-Soviet) to back off on what it terms internal affairs, but at the very least, said boycott will remind Putin( whether he personally subscribes to such bigoted sentiments or cynically panders to his supporters prejudices is unclear and in a sense misses the wider point- which is arguably worse - genuinme bigotry or wilful pandering to prejudice)that the "price tag" for such policies is prohibitively high- as former US Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton said a few years back "Gay rights are human rights!"

Anybody else think as I do?

The only way Putin would get the point is if America pulls its teams and if a couple other countries also follow. But that wouldn't happen in a bajillion years. Other than that I'm not doing anything, I gotta find me a job.

2) We should have any say in another countries policies

Since when did boycotts have an effect on this world? Boycott this. Boycott that. In the ends, it changes nothing. The effort should have gone to a much more significant methodology to achieve change.

I say yes but that would hardly deter the Russian government. It doesn't affect the situation as much as it should do.

If the USA boycotts (i.e., doesn't send any participants) the winter Olympics it will be over Russia granting Edward Snowden temporary asylum for one year.

No offense, but that's a pretty stupid concept. So no.

I am 100% supportive of two consenting adults marrying each other, regardless of race, religion, or gender. That being said, the Olympics ARE a politic-free event. That's why the North Korean team can get away with calling themselves the People's Democratic Republic of North Korea. It's not about that. And for us to boycott the olympics just because we disagree with one of Russia's policies (albeit a very important one; civil rights), that's no reason to completely pull out. It's a reason to enter the olympics, train really hard, and win more medals than they do.

The thing is their are gay people who compete in the Olympics. Which means that either this year they won't be able to preform this year.... And like the OP said, this wouldnt be the first time injustices have fought against at the olmpics.

And for thosse complaining about the " gay agenda" what exactly do you think our agenda is? Our agenda is simply to be happy in society and have equal rights as everybody else. We arent the ones locking people up for love. Thats straight people doing that. We aren't trying to force people into being a sexuality they don't want to be, thats STRAIGHT people. Our agenda is wanting to be happy as who we are.

Once again, I am all for boycotting the russian olympics.

Yes although there has been other countries who hosted the Olympics and shouldn't have.

China hosted the Olympics and no one boycotted that yet the country holds one of the worst track records in human rights infractions.

I couldn't care less about the spectacle. Everything the Olympics supposedly stands for hasn't been there for a very long time and it should be abolished.

I don't believe individual governments should stand against it. If they do it should be a united front of all countries, not a fractured one where one does go and one doesn't. I do believe however it's up to the people. Athletes can choose themselves not to go, people in the stands can choose not to go. Even channels can choose not to broadcast. And you can choose not to watch it.

My Prime Minister David Cameron has expressly ruled out the idea of a boycott of the Sochi Winter Olympics- arguing in effect that "constructive engagement" with Putin is preferable to"megaphone diplomacy". With all due respect to Mr Cameron, I believe that this argument is specious- attendance at the Winter olympics by Western athletes will be taken by the authorities as a sign of moral approbation of the regime's policies. The Russian Federation, true, is NOT the Third Reich any more than it is the Soviet Union during Stalinism, but its policies vis a vis the LGBT community are sufficiently illiberal to make the call for a boycott ethically defensible

(Question for the"sport should be kept separate from politics" line of argument: if Saudi Arabia was hosting the Olympics- presumably Summer- would you say "we must not be critical of domestic policies of our hosts lest we offend their religious sensibilities!"???. Even if the Russian Orthodox Church is expressly homophobic- whaetever happened to the concept of separation of Church and State( a concept even traditionally Catholic countries such as Italy, France, the Republic Of Ireland, Spain and Poland observe)???

All these. Russia has the right to their own policies even if the U.S. doesn't agree with it. The U.S. really needs to mind their own business and laws unless it affects us in a major way.

It's so annoying how the U.S. can't mind their own business.

This is what I think:

1. It's none of the U.S. business

2. All because the U.S. has an opinion does not make it right.

3. It's the Olympics, not a time for political speech.

4. Russia can do what they want.

5. Boycotting wont change them.

6. Everyone who thinks we should boycott needs to mind their own business and be glad we live in the U.S.

As a Jew who would be promptly persecuted just for entering parts of Saudi Arabia, I would have no opposition to the Olympics were they to be hosted in Saudi Arabia. Rather than for us to completely stay out of them, I think it's a better, more healthy plan to just go even harder and kick their asses! :-D

@supernategames: @616vulture:

Who said it was the United States? The OP didn't mention the States, and further to that, he resides in the United Kingdom (and I live in Canada).

Also, the Olympics is an international event so it's not the host country's business solely -- but everyone's (supposedly).

Having said that, again I will state -- the Olympics are ridiculous and have been for a long, long time.

@mrdecepticonleader:

It's over run with bureaucrats -- mostly corrupt -- with too many controversies with judges and even in awarding which country gets to host -- another cog in the political world to wield with no regard to what it was meant for, which was to remind the world we are all human beings with beautiful differences which we should get to showcase every four years with joined pride and sense of camaraderie while celebrating the best of human athleticism and ONLY that.

If that can come back (or achieved since it can be argued it's never been a reality) then I will change my mind.

This is coming from someone who has experienced two cities in her country bend over backwards, go severely into debt just to TRY getting the chance to be Olympic hosts. When countries like China and now Russia are chosen, it's disgusting. Yes, disgusting and pathetic and reveals the dirty underpants under all those glitzy opening and ending extravaganzas.

Maybe if there is proof the Olympics actually helped the people of the countries who hosted them, and the word in unity I could be persuaded to change my mind but all I see is money wasted which would have been put to better use within the countries themselves or better yet (yes, bleeding heart socialist that I am) put to creating infrastructure in third world countries so they can "fish" for themselves in time rather than be dependent on NGO's who their governments lean heavily on so they can keep the creme to themselves and keep their people oppressed.

Phew. Sorry -- lol. I kind of barfed all that out. It's one of my triggers -- waste and directionless money-spending. Much like rich people partaking in thousand dollar a plate banquets while on the most expensive ship and the most amazing entertainment for a "worthy" cause when barely a profit is generated for the charity supposedly being supported. All flash and show and marketing and amusement for them.

(love Bill Gates and all the other billionaires who intend to give their money over to charity -- just wanted to throw that in.)

No. Granted what Russia is doing is incredibly wrong there is no doubt about that. But it's unfair to the athletes in our country that have worked their assess off to become Olympic level athletes and yet not get a chance to participate in what is the greatest and biggest sporting event/competition in the world and it happens once every four years and by skipping one it leaves a lot of athletes that are in their prime at the point when the Olympics are held to not have the opportunity to participate in another one. I have a relative that was in that very situation in the 1980's Olympics that the US boycotted because of Russia invading Afghanistan.
