California's "scary clown" craze

British readers may be aware of the "scary clown" craze in California in which various individuals (usually men presumably) dressed as clowns( usually reminiscent of "Pennywise" in the Stephen King novel and TV series "It" and other "scary" clowns) have seen in various small towns, acting in vaguely menacing fashions. Although several people(presumably coulrophobes- a medical condition meaning a morbid fear of clowns) have professed distress at this craze, they do not seem to doing anything demonstratably criminal far less anti-social.

Due to the Internet and social media sites, it now seems the craze is spreading to Britain.

I must confess to a certain bemusement as to the reason for this sudden "scary clown" craze, but hey, the Friday after next is Halloween- and there's always a lot of weird stuff going in the run up to October 31( Halloween of course is based on the ancient Celtic feast of Samhain, whereby the barriers between life and death, reality and fantasy are traditionally at their most permeable)- my advice to coulrophobes( whether in the US or UK) is to "chill out"- it's probably just a fad-like hula hoops or Rubik's Cubes!

Anybody think as I do?

Terry
