@Timandm: I've been hearing about how good the recent issues of X-Factor have been, though i read their TPB's of Heart of Ice and The Many Lives Of Madrox and frankely enjoyed them but not enough for me to start collecting them, unless a character that i really liked and has been shifted into Comic Book Limbo went and joined their team.

@ReVamp: Yeah, i thought the same thing when i heard of the idea but still, so far IMO it's been really good, just the art in the "Meanwhile" Story-arc is seriously OFF PUTTING.
I've been reading the original 1960's X men comics and they are pretty dull, theres nothing too them, is there a point in reading them? or should i move to the 70's ?
Wow, that's going back a ways... I'm sure it would be fun to read all of the X-Men comics but... You'll find that much of what you learn about the characters gets radically changed or undone... Are you wanting to catch up with the current X-Men?
I'd suggest starting with Uncanny X-Men 444 (July 2004) .
Many stories were tied up at that point, and new ones began... Issue 444 starts AFTER the thing with Xorn (really Magneto) demolished the school, wrecked Manhattan, and killed Jean... Also, you should simultaneously ready, New X-Men #1, (July 2004) Also, X-men #157 which becomes X-men legacy on issue 208...
So... Uncanny X-men 444 New X-men #1 X-men #157 Which all came out July of 2004... That's a good starting point and will take you much less time to catch up... Good luck with it..
@ReVamp: Oh Ok, its the same line up but with a twist.....Storm leads a team consisting of Kitty Pryde,Colossus and Lockheed, currently Beast and his girlfriend Abigail Brand are on the team too (well maybe not Brand considering her current situation) but i don't think they're staying for long because Beast only came for a favour, Cyclops is leading a team consisting of Emma Frost, Wolverine and Armour, so its generally the same characters but in 2 separate teams featuring in 2 separate Story-arcs, so the teams currently have never met in a single Story-arc nor has anyone from either teams featured in the opposite team if you get what i mean, although they reference each other. (im hoping they do meet in the near future for a big event in Astonishing)
