Original Star Wars Trilogy vs The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Lord of the Rings trilogy has won seventeen Academy Awards, and Return of the King is the most awarded film in Oscar history; the Star Wars trilogy is wholly inferior.
Art isn't purely subjective, and the existence of this thread is proof of that.

Not seeing how awards in the end all be all.
Art isn't purely subjective.
Explain in layman's terms how it isn't, pls.
Lord of the Rings is the better trilogy. Better ensemble cast, better acting and better writing across all three films.
Art isn't purely subjective.
How do you figure?
I love both trilogies to death, but to me it's undeniable that LotR is the better film trilogy. It's better received critically and each movie improved upon the former, while SW had a significant dip in quality from ESB to RotJ. I think Star Wars has a more interesting mythology, though.
Ok so a bunch of pussywankers like giant slugs, teddy bears and the a bunch of plastic dressed troopers who cant aim . I'll respect their opinion. Ok fine there's a 10000 minute scene where two droids WALK -(see what I did there) whilst boring the crap out of us with incest appearing in the next film. Still highly respectable. But when someone says they find a fucking singing toad more entertaining than watching 6000 horseback warriors who can actually kill someone with a epic speech in the beginning, I unfortunately have to reveal to the nerds that the prequels were 300000 times better than the original crap fest with paedo old emperors.. At least there were decent battles rather than weirdos disappearing. The only thing good about star wars is lightsabres and the soundtrack which lotr still beats. Anyone who hates Lotr probably likes twilight or hunger games or some shit like that.
I would take Lord of the Rings personally.
I'm just curious as to why you don't debate LotR on the boards, because whenever we talk you hint about your knowledge of the LotR universe, and if you like it in a comparable way to SW, I'm going to say that you read some of the LOTR EU as well (TheSilmarillion, etc).
@shootingnova: As a collective lore, I've dedicated far more time and reading to SW but not because I consider it better written necessarily, just with more material in it; as a composite world, I think the LotR-universe is probably better constructed because it was written as more of an epic mythology and was written over several decades.
Regarding LotR's EU, I never finished The Unfinished Tales when I was younger, though I still have it lying around. I actually haven't read through a Tolkien novel in a long time, and I forgot about many of the precise details of the universe, which prevents me from debating it in threads very much. The last Tokien novel I touched was The Hobbit some months ago, just skimming; I read it twice (IIRC) when I was younger. Overall, no, I don't know much about LotR's larger history, just about the most well-known stories (Hobbit, Fellowship, Towers, King). Most of my exposure to the legendarium is limited to those, even though the rest of the books have caught my attention in book stores more than once.
As far as how much I like it, I actually like it a lot. LotR's lore is just as or more fascinating to me as SW's is, but somehow, I got too lost in SW's EU and never made the time for extra-LotR lore pieces, which is regretful. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. Some of Tolkien's lesser known works are on my list of classic literature that I need to read at some point and have been for a long while.
@silver2467: Fair enough.
They're both superb movie trilogies. This is like comparing spots and stripes.
As a whole(movies and Lore material), which do I enjoy more? It all comes down to which genre I prefer the most-- fantasy or science fantasy?
Growing up as a kid, I was heavily influenced by medieval-esque fantasies like LOTR, Dungeons & Dragons, Dragonlance, The Neverending Story, Willow, The Chronicles of Narnia, Secret of Nim, Dark Crystal(lol), Warhammer, The Elder Scrolls games, etc.
