This Week's Essential Comics: 12/05/12

Torn over what to buy this week? Let us provide some recommendations!

A lot of comics come out every week. A lot. I mean, just look at the list for this week's new releases. It's daunting and it's not easy trying to choose what titles will fit into your budget. Well, we're here to help.

We're not saying you need to buy these titles, but we do highly recommend them and think they're definitely worthy of your cash. We'll tell you why each title rocks and each provide a preview (when available) so you can get a sneak peek of the issue.

Remember, you can click each image to enlarge them!

Dan Slott has gone all M. Night Shyamalan on us and we can't wait to see how things are going to pan out. Doc Ock and Peter have traded bodies, but Oc hasn't said how yet. Will he reveal his secret? What does he plan on doing now that he's in such a powerful body and has all of Parker's memories? How will Pete make it out of this situation... or will he die in Ock's decaying body?

According to the solicit, we can also expect to see cameos from Lizard, Morbius and more Spidey villains.

Here's a preview.

Marvel NOW! has, for the most part, been fairly awesome. Now it's time to see if the House of Ideas can hit a home run with their biggest title... and according to G-Man's early review, they knock it out of the park. Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opena join forces to deliver this title not once but twice a month. You're not allowed to call yourself a Marvel fan if you don't pick this one up.

Be sure to check out Tony's early review here and go here for our first look at the issue.

Hellboy is dead but that doesn't mean you've seen the last of him. The Dark Horse fan favorite character is back in an all new series illustrated and written by Mike Mignola.

Hellboy will bump into many familiar faces during his time in Hell and a throne awaits him. They also claim this will be the "most bizarre depiction of Hell you've ever seen." Sounds like a healthy portion of family friendly fun. Count me in.

Check out the issue thanks to a preview from Comic Book Resources.

Scott Snyder on this list? It's clearly rigged! Honestly, the writer can do no harm and we're now anticipating part 3 of "Rotworld: The Green Kingdom." We've seen the twisted versions of quite a few characters, but now we get a real treat: Batman! The solicit also claims we'll see quite a few inmates of Arkham Asylum too. But again: Swamp Thing and Batman in the same issue. 'Nuff said, right?

Be sure to check out MTV Geek's exclusive preview.

Brian Michael Bendis is delivering some disturbingly dark goods with this one. After Daredevil's death, we follow Ben Urich and his quest to discover what really happened. The title has been brilliant and shockingly dark so far, so it's tough not to take the cover as a clear indicator that things aren't bright for Elektra... yet again.

Here's a quick preview to get an idea how crazy it is.

There's some other Marvel NOW! titles coming out. You can see reviews for those on the REVIEWS page. Other honorable mentions include ACTION COMICS where it looks like we'll be getting some answers as well as the first trade for X-O MANOWAR, which we're giving away five copies in a contest.

Good stuff this week. Avengers and Swamp Thing definitely. Trade waiting on DD: End of Days.

Posted by xAnimosity

Im grabbing all of these but Hellboy. Pretty awesome week for comics!

Does anyone know if you can just jump into a Hellboy book or is alot of backstory required? The solicits have me interested since I'm a huge fan of different interpretations of Hell and I've always dug Mignolas artwork.

Spider-Man in Doc Ock's body!

Batman and Swamp Thing team up?!

Hellboy in Hell!!!

and Daredevil has finally lost it. Blind man gone rouge!!!

I wish I can get this money, but gotta save for Chrismas presents for the family >_<

Posted by haydenclaireheroes

From this List I am going to be getting The Amazing Spider-man and Avengers

Posted by kid Apollo

the Daily Bugle has really turned to shite lately. Front page Spider-man bashing is all good but 2 feature articles on some nerd named Parker, who cares?

Posted by CombatSpoon86

Animal Man, Avengers, Hawkeye, Punisher War Zone and Swamp Thing. Good week here.

Only two issues for me this week. Which is refreshing since it seems like I've been dumping bucketfuls of money on tie-ins and back-issues of late (mainly precursor stories for Age of Ultron).

  • Deadpool #3 - I've actually enjoyed getting the opening arc on a bi-monthly basis. It reads like a breath of fresh air. I wouldn't call it laugh-out-loud kind of funny, but its light tone and gorgeous art make for a fun deviation from the other books on my pull-list.
  • Detective Comics #15 - Tony Daniel's writing is some of the worst that ever I've seen on a Bat book. Mercifully, his stint is over and the brains behind the hit-comic Chew has taken over writing duties in the form of John Layman. I must also say that I think Jason Fabok is a superstar artist in the making. I love how precise he is in detailing Batman's suit.

@Reignmaker: I've been buying 'Tec since Layman and Fabok came on board. Cool story angle and the art has been great. Hope they knock it out of the park with DotF.

I am looking forward to Invincible this week :D

This is such an expensive week for me...which is strange because there is only one Death of the Family tie-in this week and I'm only getting 2 DC titles overall (I usually get more DC than Marvel.)

  • Avengers #1
  • Amazing Spiderman #699
  • Deadpool #3
  • All New X-Men #3
  • Thunderbolts #1
  • Hawkeye #5
  • Detective Comics #15
  • Worlds's Finest #7 (only pulling this book while Damian is in it)

I really want to start reading Swamp Thing but I've never read any Swamp Thing comics before (no, not even Alan Moore's run...sue me.) The series really has me intrigued because I love Scott Snyder so much though. And now there's a crossover with Batman!? Argh! I need to read the first trade already.

Swamp Thing #15 pls.

More of that Rotworld. Yes!

How is Shadowman #2 not essential?

I'm also checking out this... the preview looks interesting.

Out of this list, I'm really only interested in Spiderman. It's not a very big week for me.

Lots of good comics coming out this week. I'm most eager to read AvengersShadowmanAction Comics and Hellboy.

What if you get 'slightly used' comic books for your family?

@kid Apollo: Look it's all about human interest pieces. You forget about the omnipotent god of all knowing that writes the headlines on the Daily Bugal every once and a while.

Posted by TDK_1997

ASM is the thing that I'm most looking forward to.

Fairly great haul for me this week:

  • Animal Man #15
  • Avengers #1
  • Before Watchmen: Comedian #4

  • Fury Max #7
  • Hawkeye #6

  • Amazing Spider-man #699

I have to admit--the two books 'm looking forward to the most though are Minutemen (this series has been worth ALL of the Before Watchmen bickering) and Avengers (HICKMAN!).

I got my December holds that I'm getting at the end of the month. But what I am getting tomorrow at my LCS before I get in line to meet Brubaker is to get Hellboy in Hell #1 since I am going to a signing at ANOTHER LCS of mine in which Mignola is going to be there. So excited!
