You Butter Believe It! 4

Highly Recommended!Al Bundy makes a cameo appearance in this, the fourth part of the current CHEW arc, "Major League Chew". Okay, so it isn't actually a cameo, but he is one of the main background subtleties that makes this series great. In fact, THIS is why the series is so fantastic. For me anyway. This level of detail, combined with the already scrumptious stories being told by my favorite creative team, make it the best ongoing series I am reading today. Maybe ever. I am constantly blown awa...

In Hell 0

Highly Recommended! (but be sure to read 13 and 13.1!)The look on Alejandra's face says it all. Seriously. Wow. This was the best issue of the Circle of Four arc yet - hell, of the Venom series to date. I realize it has less to do with Venom than the issues prior to this current arc, but he works great as a supporting character as much as he does the main focus.Either the Circle of Four was an excellent way to put an odd-quartet together or it is where B and C Marvel Character Series come to die...

To Hell 0

Highly Recommended!A giant protective bubble surrouds the city of Las Vegas - all hinging on a single magical amulet. Hokey? Meh, it serves its purpose... and it is not like you don't get into the hokey realm when you have guest appearances from Doctor Strange and Daimon Hellstrom! Who else would you call for a situation like this? I am pretty sure Bill Murray is busy nowadays. ;)With the outside world protected (for now) the rest and vast majority of the issue focuses on the battle between the ...

From Hell 0

Highly Recommended! This new arc, well the refinement of the last arc into this new more dedicated arc is off to a fantastic start! The "Circle of Four" has all the makings of a great mini-event - on the heels of Spider Island, we arrive in Hell City! :)Anyway, there is a certain amount of disbelief that you have to suspend to really enjoy this issue, but it should take too much of a toll. The convergence of these four characters in Sin City seems a bit forced, but works great with the story bein...

Off the Wagon 0

Recommended! There are some pretty epic battle scenes in this issue. Definitely worth it just for that... but lucky for us, this issue also moves the plot along in a big way...I realize that Flash doesn't really have legs - but him fighting and kicking people in flip-flops still made me squirm a bit. I do love how the symbiote can take any shape, size, color, density, etc. It is really an asset the exploit very well in this series.Every aspect of the Jack O'Lantern / Crime-Master portions of this...

Haunting Revelations 0

Recommended! (but not for the faint at heart)OK, I haven't said anything about the cover mis-matching at all for the first 10 issues in this series. I realize that in this day and age, the cover doesn't have to match the interior, but seriously - have read the issues that come after this, and this cover is much better, almost perfectly, suited for Issue 13. I get it. Issue 13 is really less about what is depicted here than it is about Hell on Earth, but still. All this is not to say that this iss...

Never Meet Your Heroes 0

Recommended!Guess who is back to haunt Flash and his family. Yeah, you got it, old pumpkin face. Actually, I would prefer he had the pumpkin on his head - he would look a lot less like a shriveled old Red Skull. Anyway, many pages of this book are dedicated to the fact that Crime-Master and Jack-O will not only be a major part of this next arc, but also blatantly disrespectful - seriously, it was made well know that interrupting a funeral was not following proper etiquette - yet another thing we...

Justice through Ven(geance)om 0

Recommended!Wow. This was a fantastic issue. Just because the Spider Island event is over, doesn't mean the action has subsided. This issue is all about letting your inner-venom out. It is a nice filler piece where we finally get to see Venom in action - not necessarily as a hero, but certainly as a semi-guided vengeful vigilante. Gritty doesn't begin to describe this story. Violent? Yes. Shocking? Yes. Satisfying? Double, Yes.This is exactly how I envisioned the Venom series to be - no holds ba...

Venom Team-Up! 0

Recommended!Between this and the last issue, we really see the true colors of the Queen - and they are not just Black and Yellow. She is VERY powerful and very vindictive - a cold blooded killer. Then again, as the primary antagonist for Spider Island, she should be able to hold her own in the top villain spot, even for a little while. In the past couple issues, as Spider Island has taken the limelight, Flash's personal woes have taken a back seat. The end of the last issue we see Flash deal with...

A Cure For What Ails You 0

Recommended!Another great self-contained (mostly) story as we get to see Venom play another huge part in Spider Island. In the last issue, he worked with Gravity to apprehend a Spider King - this issue he has a similar charge, but now he is after someone that is helping the city?!? Indeed, it is true, Venom is after Anti-Venom! All in an effort to get the "magic cure" Anti-Venom is offering to the masses, in the hands of Reed Richards at Horizon Labs. Easy task right? Well at least he doesn't ha...

I, Spider 0

Recommended!I have to admit, I have not read Spider Island yet, so I had to work a bit harder to wrap my brain around this issue. I am happy to say, it wasn't too much of a stretch, as this did not stray very far from the types of stories we have seen in the first five issues. In fact, it gave the story a much needed direction, as I felt it started to flail a bit, with so many semi-jointed stories each feeling like a bit of a filler.During this tie-in we do see that the troubles with Jack O'Lant...

Calories to Burn 0

Recommended!Though this felt like another filler, as the plot did not progress much, it was filled with some great background information on Flash and his personal life. Before it dives into solid drama though, there are a good six pages of action - somewhat gritty action. They certainly do not spend any time making the "Human Fly" a likable character - heck, even a character with a little more depth would have been nice. Not that he has to be "deep", but because he is not, I didn't care what hap...

Secrets in the Shadows 0

Recommended! As much as I love to see Spider-Man in this part of the story, it did feel like another filler issue - one that was meant to demoralize Flash even further than before. On top of this, we get assailed with more relationship and loss of control issues. It is obvious that the suit can be removed after 48 hours of exposure - something that may have been a temporary plot device (just like the number of missions Flash was allowed). Since the series was a success, these "temporary plot devi...

Symbiote For Hire 0

Recommended! It doesn't get much better than this! In fact, this is the story I was hoping for the previous issue. I completely understand why the Kraven bit was necessary, but this issue was just so much better. It had everything a comic fan would want - action, adventure, violence, blackmail and drama. There is just so much to this part of the arc - Venom gets to kill some bad guys, the trip to the Savage Land is concluded, and we learn more about who is pulling Jack O'Lantern's and eventually ...

The Mad Hunter 0

Recommended! At first I thought the Kraven bit was a huge distraction. But I guess that is what you get when you enter the Savage Land looking for Antarctic Vibranium - sidetracked (Thor found himself in a similar situation in Thor: Deviants Saga #4).Anyway, though it seemed like it dragged on for a while, the interaction with Kraven made sense by the end of the issue. It would actually be the root cause for much of Flash's personal struggles in the series to come. Whether this was the true inten...

Big Shoes To Fill 0

Recommended!Pretty great start to a new stand-alone series for the unexpected hero, Venom. My only background on this title was from the Point One issue collected as part of the Amazing Spider-Man: Matters of Life and Death TPB. I have to say, after reading that trade, I wondered why I didn't read ASM. Either way, the story carried over nicely from that trade, and gave me enough information to start reading this great new series. It was a lot more "gritty" than I expected. I guess I always though...

Sux to be Chu! 0

Highly Recommended!John and Rob take a daring bet with this "future" issue. It makes complete sense knowing how good these guys are with their storytelling. The thrill for me will be "verifying" that this issue actually fits within the overall perfect continuity that they have had so far. I did find it interesting that they thought they would be at Issue 27 in April 2012, which will likely not be the case, given that it is late February 2012 and we are waiting on Issue 24. :) But hey, anything i...

Bad Juju 4

Highly Recommended! We are now into a full fledged story of espionage and villainy. If there were any questions posed in the last issue, they were answered here. It is like being presented with the usually untold aspects of a spy story as they unfold. This reader perspective is a nice change to a lot of books that just keep piling on mysterious cliffhangers. There are a lot of things going on in this issue. There are many global destinations with many different characters being introduced or appea...

Long Time No Snikt! 0

Highly Recommended! Really, Really, Highly Recommended!I realize I arrived really late to the game, but wow. This is an amazing read. If you like Wolverine, Hawkeye, and Mad Max, you will love this collection of Wolverine stories. The creative team cannot be beat and is guaranteed to wow and amaze you. As you would expect from this team, it is gritty and full of no-holds-barred action/violence.In this set of stories, we see a tortured Logan, trying to forget the past - trying to forget what he d...

What's Up, Buttercup? 0

Highly Recommended!Another home run! I am not sure if I will ever find fault with this series. Seriously. It is amazing. It is as if they have the entire thing written and drawn, and all they have to do is split it up into edible bits for us and the publisher... hmm... There is so much going on, so much hinging on the continuity of the series, everything means something. The attention to detail and subtlety still astonishes me. Do not miss one bit of the background art - or you may miss some gre...

Chew Got A Deal 0

Highly Recommended!Things just keep getting better and better. Well, not for Tony, but the content of the story still keeps bringing a lot to the table - and just when you think you know everything about the CHEWniverse, you start to really understand you have only peeled back the first few layers of the onion. More powers. More talents. More violence. More death. More unsettling appetites. Sixths Please! In this isschew, we see a lot less Tony and a lot more supporting characters. Which is great...

All Chewed Up 0

Highly Recommended! The next, and fifth story arc has started: Major League Chew. Clever. But then again, the entire damn series is one giant ball of clever. I cannot say enough about this series. Interesting, because I just got hooked a couple weeks ago. I consumed the first four volumes in one bite. Now I have to wait for single issues like everyone else. In fact, I couldn't wait for the next trade, so I went out and bought the individual issues... If you are interested, my reviews of the first...

This is just wonderful. 0

Highly Recommended!I certainly do not want to take away from any thunder L'il G-Girl has earned for her very excellent review, but I did want to second, third and fourth the recommendation for this book!It doesn't matter how old you are, there is so much to this book, everyone can enjoy it! The story is filled with wit, humor and a lot of class. The art, as expected, exceeds expectations - the creative team really knocked this out of the park. It is just like watching the animated series. Which ...

Who You Gonna Call? 0

Highly Recommended!A great continuation and addition to the mini-series. We are past the half-way point in this 5-issue mini, which always begs the question, "Will this feel like a complete series, or rushed near the end?". From what I can tell, the story as a whole was well thought out, with mini-climaxes set for each issue. This issue in particular transitions nicely from the previous issue's cliffhangers and still has a lot of great elements from the first issue. The art is great as expected, ...

I'll Be Back For That Monkey 0

Highly Recommended! This was a fantastic issue. We finally get the answers to the questions we have had since the start of this series! Who was behind the Banner/Hulk split? How did it happen? What were the repercussions? The way they went about telling the back-story was perfect. The creative team mixed it perfectly with the ongoing and current story-line. It was easy to follow and did not distract from the main story. The use of different colored dialog boxes which tie the conversations from pas...

Just Five More Minutes 0

Highly Recommended!I cannot say enough about this new series! It is fantastic. I love that it is in a new setting, and not afraid to call it out or even make light of the fact. This time there was no "Texas heat" humor, but that didn't mean it wasn't on fire! (pun intended) Kaine's struggle continues... should he stay, or should he go. Find out in this issue! While I feel that the Salamander's appearance was somewhat fleeting, it did prove its point - Kaine has to willfully decide how "good" or "...

Dirty Deeds 0

Recommended! The ongoing villain on villain violence continues. There is no mention of Paladin's fate in this issue, but then again, there are far too many other things going on. Caught in the cross-hairs, Misty finds herself on the defensive - but does this mean she is not in control? It appears she has her act together, but even her strong calculating mind and bionic arm are no match for all these villains. It is no wonder the "highest bidder" argument didn't come up before now, but as this is ...

Thunder in the Jungle 0

Recommended!Picking up where the last issue left off, Thor and Phastos head off to find Antarctic vibranium as part of their promise to repair the resurrection chamber for the Deviants, who in turn promise to release Karkas and Ransak. Not to enter the action/adventure too soon, the story begins with a flashback which includes information on Phastos' background, ongoing torment, and his time as a human. This part of the story seemed a little out of place, other than as some character development...

In the Right Place, At the Right Time 0

Highly Recommended!I really enjoyed this book! It was a great jumping on point to a great new series. It reads like a spy novel and looks like a video game, the likes of MW3.I thought the concept and plot were fantastic. The story has been setup for an exciting arc that should take us through a great number of issues. Not only do we see Bucky and Natasha's primary mission (search and destroy sleeper agents), we see his target's primary mission (take out Doctor Doom - which may not be all that ba...

Family Reunion 0

Recommended (but only if you are collecting the series or like what has been going on)Falcon, Captain America, Iron Man, and now the Red Hulk? Wow, Cable must have his act together. Granted they each attacked in sequence and he was prepared with future tech, but still. Could Red Hulk make the difference? Well as things have been going for the Avengers, likely not...He does give Cable one hell of a beating, but like another comic this week, the Hulks are having a hard time - actually feeling pain...

One Brain Short 0

Recommended! The much anticipated follow-up to Issue 21 finally arrived. In the last issue, we were left with not one, not two, but three separate cliffhangers. Each one, and its respective part of the story were moved forward in this issue. We see the interesting and well written battle scene follow-up, where we learn the new fate of Wolverine, AoA-Nightcrawler and Deadpool. Suffice to say, Wolverine has had better days - I would say the same about Deadpool, but he is just such a ham, no matter ...

Reality Bites 2

Recommended (not highly, but you will want to read this to keep up with the story)The way Nul was dealt with was extremely anti-climactic. It felt rushed and not worthy of a three issue arc. All the "impeding doom" that was meant to be felt, was instead dissolved in an instant by fancy ancient super-powers.I guess it could have only resolved itself in this way, though. Nul was obviously more powerful than the team, especially with the Silver Surfer preoccupied. The escape of Prester John and the...

EL POYO LOCO 0

Highly Recommended!I am just going to come out and say it... I couldn't decide which would win my "Subtlety of the Collection Award" for this book: "Charlie Sheen is a Cylon" or "Storm, J." - so I declared it a tie. As I have stated repededly, this attention to detail is what keeps me coming back for more. It is incing on the cake, where the cake is perfect writing and ideal art.Again, FANTASTIC work. This collection continues the ongoing saga of our favorite "detective-turned-agent-turned-hero-...

Olive For These Moments 0

Highly Recommended!Another fantastic addition to the menu. This savory collection takes our relationship with the "detective-turned-agent-turned-hero-anti-hero" to the next level. Now, armed with a girlfriend, Tony takes an even bigger bite out of crime. Things are going better, but not everything is beets and saboscribnery. His relationship with Amelia, his partner Colby and his job are in a constant state of peristalsis.Obviously the art and the writing are superb. This is fantastic work. It i...

You've Got Some Gallsaberry! 0

Highly Recommended! If you haven't sunken your teeth into this series yet, you haven't tasted the pure genius that is John Layman and Rob Guillory. As I am pretty sure they prefer to remain un-tasted, take it from their near-saboscribner ability to help you experience this delicious work of art.The story of our favorite "detective-turned-agent-turned-hero-anti-hero" continues - this time it takes him to a remote island with one cluck of a secret!Along with the fantastic continuation of story, "ar...

Beets The Rest 0

Highly Recommended! This has got to be one of the best series I have ever read. There are no super-heroes, no cosmic heroics, and no non-sense. It is pure entertainment. It takes place in a universe where millions have perished at the hands of a "bird flu epidemic" (or so they say), some people have special food related abilities, and at one time life existed outside the milky way. Oh, and yeah, there is cannibalism - but it is not the, "fava beans" kind of cannibalism you may be imagining - it i...

Twenty-Eight Minutes 0

Highly Recommended!Things finally came together for me on this issue. While I enjoyed the previous issues, I didn't quite fully embrace all the various plot streams until this part of the arc. It was one simple drawing, one simple explanation in the book that did it for me - the flashback where Val and Nathaniel work on the "end of the world timing issue" together. The art still feels strange, but I am getting use to it. It doesn't distract me from the story any longer - which is good, because th...

How Ominous. 2

Highly Recommended!I will start with the art - I am not a fan, but I agree with djotaku, the children actually do like children. In previous issues, I have always felt they looked like awkward miniature teens. I do still like that the android is not wearing glasses... and while he does look more like a dragon, it isn't the look I would have picked out for him.As everyone is stating, the story does indeed move on with this issue. There is a lot of action and a lot of character development. It is ...

Translocated 0

Recommended (less than the rest, but still a good story)If Fantastic Four #600 was the "battle issue", FF #12 is the new branch off story-line for the children of the Future Foundation. The art in this issue takes a DRASTIC turn from what we have been used to up until this point in the series. While some of it is better (the android loses his need for glasses in the interior and the kids look more like kids), some of it is really strange looking. In fact, it is so strange that it really distract...

Assimilation 0

Recommended! While this is another setup, "rally the troops" issue, it certainly is not boring. It is full of interesting twists and turns - and one shocking reveal that left me speechless. One thing about this issue, as compared the last few, is the increased amount of time spent with "the children" at the Baxter building. In retrospect, I understand the need for their class project, it just seemed too coincidental - I guess maybe it was just foreshadowing.Even more foreshadowing for the impendin...
