Painkiller Jane: The Price of Freedom #1If you read my reviews, you know that I am a huge fan of this creative team. Jimmy et al. always deliver more value per issue than most any comic on the market today. This book is no exception. What do you get in this issue? Two stories! The ongoing, and one called, "From The Beginning", a short, yet complete story to catch up the n00bs and refresh the established fans. This is reminiscent of one of my favorite comics of all time from Jimmy and team: Creato...

Redefining F = ma one issue at a time… 2

Recommendation: YES!The Top 5 Reasons you should pick up this awesome new series:It will make you smarter… or at least you will start to get a small grasp on what is going on in the story that makes you feel stupid. The creative team on this is fantastic. If you are not following them yet, you should be: @topcowmatt and @RahsanEkedalThe story is unique, officially classified as non-superhero, but as you will see, there are some pretty super things about the main character. As the first story arc c...

You think you have problems… 1

Recommended! For some reason, I never found time to sit down and read this book - until this weekend. I decided to make time - given all my unfettered support for Jimmy and team, I found myself bewildered by the fact that I hadn’t yet read and reviewed this book…As you can see, I enjoyed it - very much so.This will actually be more of an advertisement than a review, as I am not going to spoil anything… in fact, the “top N reasons” thing seems to work pretty well for this type of thing, so here go...

Some things should be left alone… 0

Recommended! Some things should be left alone…So, by now you know I am quite biased towards the work of Jimmy and Justin. This is for good reason - they are my favorite storytellers. Now, with that out of the way, why should YOU pick up this book tomorrow (November 21st, 2012)?Here is a list of the top 5 reasons I would pick this book up, if I were you:The Story - Jimmy and Justin are well known for their prolific storytelling. This book adds to their wonderful library of work. It is a bit differe...

Old Squatchy 6

Recommendation: "Absolutely Not!"I just finished this issue.I needed to see the train wreck for myself.I needed to finish this.INCREDIBLE CRAP! The monkey had the right idea.I have NEVER rated a book this low before. I am so disappointed. I did enjoy the vast majority of the art, but it could not make up for the bill of goods we were sold here with the story.Sure, he found a way to tie everything back in. Big deal. It doesn't save it. Not even close.I have to assume Aaron didn't care about this ...

Flying High! 0

Recommendation: “The best one yet!”Carol’s trip through time continues… wait until you see the end of this issue!I thought it was only fitting to review this book Live! during the Women of Wonder Day event on Sunday, October 21st, 2012 - so I did. If you are interested, you can find that review as part of Stacks of Comics - Episode 015 - Women of Wonder Day 2012!NOTE: The review starts at time stamp: 00:43:55 in that episode.I really cannot say much more about this book than I already have, othe...

A Golem by any other name… 2

Recommendation: “Yes, this is a wonderful abridged collection of the 2004 DC Comics Series, bound in a beautiful over-sized 96 page hard cover.”There is really nothing more I can say to promote this book than what is already written in Jim Steranko’s introduction. He covers it 100%. But as you may not have that introduction handy, I will do my best to (concisely) encourage you to get your hands on this HC and add it to your collection. The original series, published in 2004 by DC spanned 12 issue...

Worth Thwipping Up 0

Recommendation: "Yep, definitely worth thwipping up!"The Minimum Carnage mini-event continues here!Last week we were introduced to this story arc with Minimum Carnage Alpha, the beginning, as it were. Now we will get a few weeks of crossovers in the Scarlet Spider and Venom titles. It is a pretty neat idea, and a nice way to tie these two Spidey Thwip-Off series together. The mini-event will end with Minimum Carnage Omega, seems fitting. It will all take place within two months, October-November...

Putting the WOW in Wonder Woman! 0

Recommendation: "Yes, Indeed!"I have to be honest - This was my first Wonder Woman comic book. Ever.I am impressed. As a quick side note, it should be stated that this is the print version of the digital-first comics published earlier this year. Here is the "Story Arc" as recorded on Comic Vine: http://www.comicvine.com/ame-comi-girls/39-56800/I picked it up because it was produced by my favorite creative team... so at least I knew it was going to be good, regardless of the subject matter. Some p...

Not. Quite. Zombies. Right? 0

Recommendation: "If you are into the 'Marvel Universe vs...' story line, sure."I am not familiar with the "Marvel Universe vs..." story line... and maybe that would have helped. Heck, I didn't even notice the "infected" look of the characters on the cover until I actually picked it up to read it. I guess this is a good indication that I buy too many monthly books. Now, if I had seen that this was an "infection" / zombie Avengers book, would I have left it on the rack? Great question. This week, hm...

Consequences, Indeed. 0

Recommendation: “Yikes, not really, unless you want some filler tie-in related to AvX and Uncanny Avengers…”Another AvX title, another Variant Cover. Sigh. And this one isn’t even “special”. Sure, it is Cyclops, but that is a pretty generic cover for a variant. I guess they will get better from issue to issue because their incentive ratio is increasing? Let’s hope. You may wonder why I am concentrating on a “collection” aspect of this book, instead of the content… well that is just it - I am not ...

To Harvest an Empire 0

Recommendation: “Yeah, you are not gonna want to miss the foundation started here.”First off. How many variant covers do we need? Seriously.AND, a 1:300? Come on. AND a variant of a variant only eligible if your story throws a party? I get the Deadpool thing, but, “Call Me, Maybe?” - NOOOOOO!This is quite some initiation we have going on here. All for a book that didn’t blow me away. Sure. I gave it a 4.0 / 5.0 - seems to be the average for this book based on other ratings, but still, I was EXPE...

Let it Burn. 0

Recommendation: For sure. It was amusingly odd and thorough. The last issue in this fun 4-issue mini-series is here. I realize that it is getting mixed reviews. Well it takes a mixed kind of person to really appreciate what Frank and Mark have created here.It is a good thing that I am such a person. Because I have to say, after I finished looking at the last page, I sat back and though, "how delightful."Now, that is not the reaction that everyone will give. Hardly, I am sure. But I think we need ...

Kicked off with a mini-slaugher-SLLLSH! 0

Recommendation: Yes!Another Venom mini-event, this time with the Scarlet Spider… and Carnage! Why wouldn’t I give Carnage first billing in that list? Well this is really kinda a Venom story, and Kaine and Cletus just happen to be in it… at least that is the way this first issue of the mini-event THWIPped!… err.. unraveled.I have been a big fan of the Carnage mini-series over the past couple years. They always prove to be entertaining, full of gratuitous violence, and beautifully illustrated. We d...

End of Days... but for whom? 0

Recommendation: Yes!I had no idea what to expect going into this mini-series. I saw the cover, and though, "Hey, maybe they are alluding to something that doesn't actually happen?" I mean how can there be an 8-issue mini-series if Matt dies in the first issue?Well whatever is actually going on, it seems like the pacing is dead on (no pun intended), and it has captured my attention, at least for the next couple issues...The art is very gritty. It is certainly not "main stream", but it fits the bo...

Wrapped Up with a Fiery Bow... 0

Recommendation: Yeah, it is almost obligatory, if you have come this far, right?Over-sized issue. Great. $4.99 price tag. Ouch. But you have come this far. Maybe you have come this far and collected the $1000.00 + in variants and tie-ins? Again, Ouch. When you sit back, reflect on what the story has had to offer, you realize that yes, it was a pretty decent story - but was it worth the price you paid? In both time and money? It makes you re-evalutate the meaning of variants. At least it did for me...

Blue as the day is long... 5

Recommendation: Yes!This is one blue comic. And that is not just based on the feathers floating down on the cover, though that is a nice touch. Adult themes, language, violence, etc. abound. So, as you can imagine, it is not for the faint of heart. It is for me though. I loved it.It is perfectly gritty. The art is fantastic. The writing, is well, as you would expect. I mean, they don’t have a comic convention called MorrisonCon for nothing. So, from the perspective of someone who mostly reads super...

Equal Parts Vegetable and Transmission Fluid 3

Recommendation: Sigh, I guess, but be warned...Man, I really thought after the last issue, this would have been better. My expectations were super high, because Issue 13 felt like the come back needed to save this series from the disastrous Stay Angry! arc.So, my expectations were smashed - and not in a good way. Sigh.It does feel like Jason Aaron is not taking this book seriously. The characterization of the Doom Bots seemed WAY off. If they are all replicas of Doom, how could they possibly wor...

You Rang? 0

Recommendation: “YES!”This is another fun installment of the awesome mini-series where we see a different side of the Marvel Multiverse… a weird violent side… the side where you really don’t know what to expect - well except death. And lots of it.This may even be more violent than Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe. It is certainly in the same category. Entertaining. Fun. Gratuitous. I loved it.Though we are far from the 616, Frank Castle is on his same quest. Punishment. This time the people be...

...We Call This Tuesday. 0

Recommendation: “YES!”Again, I am always excited the week this book comes out. I know it is going to be well written and have some amazing art.Are people still not liking Dexter Soy's art? Really? I certainly hope not. Because it is still some of the best art for a comic I have ever seen... I do realize it is a specific style, that is not for everyone, but still, people have to be accepting it at least by now.I know at some point we will have an artist switch, but until then I will enjoy every p...

Code Names and Origins 0

Phantom Lady and Doll Man #2 (of 4)Recommendation: YES!This was my most anticipated comic of the week. Yeah, that may sound weird, a little ole' mini-series about the re-imagining of a classic DC character - why so excited?Well that is simple. The creative team. They are a solid group of folks, on any book. They also did a great job of captivating me during the first issue. So I was back, ready to be impressed.I was. In fact, I knew I was going to be based on the preview that was released yester...

Lethal Force Authorized 0

Recommendation: YES!Much like All-Star Western and Creator-Owned Heroes, Sword Of Sorcery offers two stories in one book. This is a wonderful model. Most books cost $3.99 now, so two stories for that one price makes it a great value. This is especially the case when both stories are well worth reading - and, as you have seen from my rating, both stories are, in fact, worth reading.I didn’t have any background on the Amethyst character… but of course, we all have some knowledge of the Beowulf stor...

A strange eulogy, to be sure. 0

Recommendation: Yes, Indeed.This is five comics in one. I have averaged the individual story scores to come up with the overall 4.5 / 5.0 rating. The following are the individual scores:O.M.A.C ( 3.0 / 5.0 )Mister Terrific ( 5.0 / 5.0 )Hawk & Dove ( 4.5 / 5.0 )Blackhawks ( 5.0 / 5.0 )Deadman ( 5.0 / 5.0 )Now a bit on each story...O.M.A.C. Reality isn't what it used to be. 2

Recommendation: Yes!This is perfection in 24 pages. Each page is a work of art, stitched together by a wonderfully spun yarn. You may have already read this story, if you keep up with the publication, Dark Horse Presents. It was split up into three parts, spread over Issues #13, #14, and #15.We even got an awesome Phil Noto cover for Issue 13:Anyway, Dark Horse Presents is not why I am writing here today… well partially, but still, you get what I am saying. More Hell Than Haven 2

This series ends, as it began, in the past. This issue takes us to the first part of "Family Ties", the explanation of The Shade, before he was The Shade - his hastened life as Richard Swift. We know something horrible had to happen for him to become the Master of Darkness. We just didn't know what it was. This is the story we have all been waiting for, especially if you listened to the Comic Vine Podcasts where James would talk about the book and tease this very fact. So, here we are, 1838. We se...

And That Was That 0

It was an amazing perspective to have on the “spectacle” - As London is burning, being destroyed by the “Egyptian” Monoliths, all the heroes of the city attempt to fight and save the innocent people caught in the grasp of its destruction - and then there is The Shade… watching, waiting, calculating what it is going to take to end the madness. Knowing full well he is the only solution to the problem sprung by his kin.If he thought he had to muster all of his power in the days leading up to this b...

Hubris 0

So this is your standard issue where the protagonist is held against his will and the antagonist tells him about all the great plans they have because soon it will no longer matter... or is it?I loved the fact that James started the entire issue out with an explanation of how the "Gods" "fell" and happened to be under the control of The Shade's villainous kin and company (Dudley and Miles St. Aubrey) - all from their POV, mind you. They may have well as been speaking of their very own undoing. E...

A Greater Good 0

And now for the meat of this 12-part maxi-series. Up until now, it has all been about tracking clues to the ends of the earth - this issue starts to unveil the background of why the globetrotting began in the first place.Watch closely as this book sets up a foundation for the next three and final issues - there were even a couple things I didn’t catch until I re-read the series. The art is great. It perfectly depicts the action and violence. I will never get tired of seeing The Shade leverage Sha...

A Mind-Blowing Final Issue! 0

Recommendation: Yes!A Mind-Blowing Final Issue of the 3-part posthumous publication honoring Steve Gerber’s Man-Thing Legacy!I knew this issue was going to be interesting. The whole mini-series has been interesting. You do have to be in a very specific state of mind to read and consume the work though… it is not something you can read distracted. It is madness. It portrays madness. It is madness.I feel that it does so quite eloquently. How else would you portray such a thing? The Art - lets see… i...

Gone Dark. 0

Recommendation: Yes!So much was spoiled about this issue (by Marvel on Facebook, the day of its release, by publishing an interview with the creator’s about their choices. You know someone dies.I will not put that person’s name in this review. In fact, I am not 100% that this person is dead. I wouldn’t have guessed that is what happened - but I have to assume that is what happened based on what the creators have stated publicly. There was more illustrative evidence of what happened to Wolverine tha...

Thanos Rules! 2

Recommendation: Yes! Yes! Yes!I was very much looking forward to this issue. It was advertised in many marvel books, with my online namesake (read blog post here), as “Thanos Rules!”. I couldn’t have been more excited. lol.The cover is a bit misleading, as if you have been reading this book, it is not about the Infinity Gauntlet, and more about a Cosmic Cube, of sorts. But hey, it catches the eye and gets you in the Thanos reading mood. FWIW, I also picked up the full size poster of this cover w...

"...Keep the Chainsaw." 3

Recommendation: Yes! (Yeah, really, wow, I am surprised too!)So, needless to say, I am pleasantly surprised by the turn of events in this series. Sure, it will be ending soon, but I am glad to see that it will not be ending on a "sour" note.As you know (if you read my reviews), I was not impressed with the "Stay Angry" arc. It had so much potential and a wonderful idea, yet fell flat on execution (and the art looked a bit weird for my liking). This arc, "Hulk: United", has smashed all my expectat...

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!NOTE: The review title is a quote by @crazymorseIf you have been following this book, you have been anticipating this issue. The issue where both of the short stories come to a conclusion... at least for now.As you may know, I am HUGE fan of Trigger Girl 6. Love it. I love the action, the concept, the story, and I especially LOVE the continually unbelievable Phil Noto art. Every page he illustrates belongs in an art gallery. That said, while I am biased, I will be fair to all p...

As Human As You... 0

Recommendation: “YES!”Back in time - In the midst of battle - An unexpected destiny calls...As you may have expected, I am still very excited about this series! The art - I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this art. As kellysue stated during a recent Q&A Panel, "Dex's work just keeps getting more and more Epic." - I agree. Each page is a portrait. I also like it because it is so different. It is certainly not main stream... but I certainly wouldn't mind it if it was. :)The McGuinness covers o...

Captivating 1st Issue! 0

Recommended!First of all, let me say… I have no background in these characters. I saw that Jimmy and Justin were the writers, so I picked it up. I knew at the very least, I would get a great story, and from a quick flip through the pages, some really nice art.I was pleased to see that my hunch based on the creators paid off… well at least was well worth the money. :)I was also drawn to this book because it was a mini-series. I have come to trust Jimmy and Justin’s work. Period. But their mini-se...

Recommendation: “YES!”First, I have to say - I am really excited about this series.J. Howard Miller's "We Can Do It!" poster from 1943I love the art! The cover, the interior, all up - I love it. The cover offers a throw-back to J. Howard Miller’s “We Can Do It” poster from 1943 - which is exactly what you get once flip through the pages… an issue full of stylistic art depicting a story that is rooted in the past.Even though the story starts out in the current Earth-616 present, the theme is all ...

Clint between missions: Paying Rent. Rescuing Dogs. BBQs. 0

Recommendation: “YES!”With this series Matt Fraction takes the Hawkeye out of hero and replaces him with Clint, the guy. The “regular guy” who has to go to work everyday with Gods, Mutants, men of Iron, geniuses, etc. What is like like for Clint on a daily basis? Well here we get to find out.You may think, “Oh, that isn’t going to be interesting.” Well, don’t be short-sighted. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!NOTE: Portions of this have been taken from this blog post.American Muscle - Part 3This has been and continues to be a great post-apocalyptic story. The art (Kevin Mellon) fits the mood and tone of the story PERFECTLY.The writing is BANG! on.It has great story progression - there has been enough revealed in each issue to keep you interested but not too much to spoil the pace.I love the gratuitous violence (as might be expected). One of the best aspects of the story is that you a...

More deaths for your comic dollar! 2

Recommendation: "YES!"I was eagerly looking forward to this issue. I don't know what it is about these highly violent, "lots of main characters are dying" issues that I am drawn to lately. Between this series and Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, we are getting more deaths per comic dollar than we have in a long time. I obviously love the gratuitous violence. You never know who is going to die when, that is one of the main reasons I like these omniverse issues...The art (by Mark Texeira) fits ...
