    Venom

    Character » Venom appears in 2798 issues.

    The Venom symbiote originally bonded with Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man, during his adventure in the first Secret Wars on the Beyonder's planet called Battleworld. Initially, he thought the symbiote was just an attire. However, upon his discovery, he rejected it because he realized that it was sentient. Since then, the symbiote has bonded with several other hosts, including Eddie Brock, Angelo Fortunato, Flash Thompson, Ann Weying, and even Carol Danvers. Currently, its host is Eddie Brock.

    Filmmakers may be taking the character in a completely new direction...

     Does this look like the face of a
     Does this look like the face of a "hero"?

    We reported on the upcoming 'Venom' film earlier today; but can you believe there is more news? Traditionally, it is rather difficult to base an entire film around an antagonist. Hollywood seems to have something against telling a story from the "bad guy's" perspective. It could be because, traditionally, stories where the antagonist comes out on top don't do very well at the box office. This very philosophy may have influenced the upcoming 'Venom' movie! According to a more recent and in depth report by Variety, fans of the infamous comic book character may be seeing a whole new side to him once he makes it to the big screen.

     The Venom, an arch enemy of the web-slinger in the Marvel Comics series, will be transformed into an anti-hero who becomes a defender of the innocent.

    That's right 'Venom' will get to be the hero. Additionally, the report seems to indicate that the spin-off will have little to do with it's predecessor ('Spider-Man 3)  and the story will more than likely start from scratch.

     Topher Grace--who just signed on to star in “Robert Rodriguez’s Predators” at Fox--played the villain and his human alter ego--Eddie Brock- but he is not considered a shoo-in to reprise, as the spinoff will start from the drawing board.

    With news indicating that we may not be seeing Topher reprise the role, how do you feel about 'Venom' playing the role of the "good guy"? Do you think it has the potential to be successful?

    I'm not feeling very good about this movie, but I'm feeling better knowing that he isn't going to be a straight villain. Unless it's about Hannibal Lector or Norman Bates or something, I don't see a movie with a villain as the protagonist being very good (IMO). What really shocked me, though, was Topher being in Predators.

    Venom has always been a sort of lesser of evils. Unlike everyone on the planet, i didnt hate Topher Grace as venom. He was just smarmy enough to make it work. For spider man 4 i hope they do the Goblin killing Gwen Stacy thing, but with Mary Jane instead of the new Gwen Stacy who is smoking hot so much!!

    sorry, i kind of spazzed out there.

    Well he's been the good guy before. So it's nothing new, really. The Venom "Lethal Protector" 6 issue mini series back in the early 90s done it. Was actually the first comics I ever "collected".

    At the time I loved it. When I read it now don't hate it. I probably feel nostalgia towards it more than anything. It's not great, but it wasn't horrible for me. It was okay as a six issue mini series, but not as a movie.

    I don't think they should waste a venom movie on making him a defender. They should keep Venom the way he's supposed to be. There's alot of potential for a good Venom movie and they just seem so intent on f&*%king it up.

    Well, he was the "Lethal Enforcer" for a while in his own series, though the fact that series didn't last might also say something. lol

    I think they screwed up Venom's character with the movie. The idea was given so little time. It would of been more interesting if the third movie had been about Peter overcoming the black suit and have that lead the fourth movie into Venom.

    Hollyweird is too hung up on outdated concepts and when you change something basic about a character you lose what makes that character special. I don't like Venom much so I could care less what they do to him. But the approach they are taking makes me glad that "they" never got their hands on Lobo.

    Actually Anti-hero's used to do very big money for Hollywood at one time.  Dirty Harry was considered an Anti-hero, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were nominated for Oscars.  The Deathwish franchise, The God Father movies are about organized crime.  Casino, Good Fellas.  The are all against the norm or traditional hero's and in noway good guys but scum bags.  There are film classes based off of these type of movies.  A super-hero anit-hero is another case, but there is a whole new gereration that is loving the villian as the head roll.  Mostly portraid in shows, and not movies.  All the vampire shows are examples.  Remember vampires have to kill people to live which reminds me of the Twilight series.  Dexter is about a serial killer.  Brotherhood is about the Irish mob and it's dirty politician relatives, and Sons of Anarchy (one or my favorites) is based off of a motor cycle gang.  We remember Sopranos don't we.

    I have a feeling since he is a anti-hero for this movie, then at the end of the movie he should turn into a full-on villain and in the sequel, face off against Spider-Man.

    Well Eddie never stole or robbed banks or anything he just wanted Spider-Man dead. If he had killed Spider-Man he probably would have went on to be a hero as Venom. Now if they were doing Gargan Venom I would so be raving MAD!!!!!!. But Eddie I'll judge after I see the movie.

    well, he's always had the twisted idea that he is a protector of the innocent, I've always thought that the only thing that made him a villain was the fact that he wanted to kill spidey, and in order to do that he sometimes killed people, but he always regretted it. Besides, every time he fought carnage (in his first appearances which were the best ones) he claimed it was because he abused the symbiote's power to kill innocents. He is an anti-hero, end of the story

    Theyve had pleny of anti-heroes succeed well I take that back only Blade succeeded Spawn failed, Punisher  & Punisher Warzone failed, Ghost Rider failed, Elektra failed, & DD was decent but it might work bc Venom has a huge cult following & plus Spiderman fans will be in theatres so even if its crappy it might do well my biggest thing is they need to get Eddies build right & Venom needs to beefier.

    1.  I never liked Venom at all, so it's somewhat irrelevent what I think.  2.  It just ticks me off the deep end when Hollywood cares so little about the source material (movie, book, history, tv)  that they just muck it up like this, totally change the entire direction of the character (or storie).  The worst part is when they smile at you and go " Yah, we know you're a fan, we know you love this stuff and it means something special to you, but we don't give a @#$%.  We think the original actor/artist/creator/author was stupid and his/her take on their own creation was crud, so we're going to totaly ruin it for all time by reinventing it for 12 year old retards.

    The Anti-Hero is how you can have a good guy do morally questionable things and still have it be alright. Like the Red Hood, Punisher, or anyone Clint Eastwood has ever played. Notice how everyone in that list is awesome.

    You people obviously don't know the way Venom plays "hero"...  He does it really good..

    Quote from one of his comics as a hero? Here goes:

    Eddie Brock had just learn that he had been protecting the wrong people all this time. The people he protected put Beck in danger just because the homeless they were bulling had gotten a hero for hire to protect them. Venom finally knows and was headed toward Sam the leader. Beck ask him to please just banish them, not to hurt them and Eddie responds with a: "Yes Beck. We promise to just banish the culprits."

    Sam: Lets go make a living

    {Venom appears out of nowhere from behind showing his fangs while screaming at his soon to be victims]

    Venom: "Not Likely. YOU'RE DEAD!"

    {Venom impales his claws into the gut of his victims who while being lift in the air by the strength of the symbiotic horror he sobs]

    Sam: "But Beck said you would only banish us!"

    {Venom grabs Sam by the neck as the man's life seem to begin fading away and responds to the man with his dark voice}

    Venom: "We are..! We are banishing you from this life!"          -- LMAO Sorry can't help it xD --

    {With his large grin of sharp fangs, his white long narrow eyes looking at his victim the dark symbiotic demon then continues..}

    Venom: "After deposing of your bodies, Beck will never know."

    {Concluded the evil force before death finally reaches his victim.}

    I love that part of the Venom comic. XD

    That's how Venom plays hero. A lethal Protector.

    I'm really not judging, I don't think they are stupid enough to make Venom a full (All by justice) hero.. They know the symbiote is evil

    Speaking personally, I've always prefered Venom and the other symbiotes to Spiderman. Guess its just my evil nature and all. Same way I always thought Doctor Doom far cooler than Mr. Fantastic.
    As for no Topher Grace in this Venom flick... yay! Venom was crap (personal opinion, no freaking out) in the equally crap-tastic Spider-Man 3 (as before, personal opinion) so I would like to see the character done better (if not exactly true to its comic book origins)

    What I like is that the creator schooled the writers and movie makers on how Venom is suppose to be, so that's why I'm confident they wont mess him up :)

    Could be excellent with some cool cameo's from the Marvel Universe - the Lethal Protector series in the early 90's was good, an anti hero doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be a traditional 'Good Guy'

    No way that this movie would be a success.  Venom was poorly portrayed in Spider-Man 3 and if they did this I imagine it'd be similar to what they did by making the Catwoman movie which bombed.  This is a character that probably could not carry a movie on his own.  There are so many other good movies with better characters that could be done...why waste time and money on this one?

    He's been a good guy / anti-hero before when he had his Lethal Protector series when he was based in San Francisco. I personally loved his series. Also, be a nice way to introduce Carnage as well.

    I personally don't trust Columbia. I'm not a fan of what they've done with the Spider-Man franchise. Except for a few things, I hate the Spider-Man trilogy. So, off the gate, I don't trust them with Venom.

    Of course, like other comics films I hated, I'm still willing to go watch them because you just never know if it will come out nice (especially when they say a relaunch, reboot, or taking it in a new direction).

    Maybe it's contradictory on my part to hate these films because I still pay to go watch them and still pay to buy the DVD when it's out. So, as far as the film studio is concerned, I'm a fan even if I hate the movie.

    I think they will give him the same type of persona they gave Sabretooth when he became a "by any means necessary" type anti here, not a vigilante Batman type one. I like this switch in the story line, he did have the whole lethal protector story and he did always have that hint of a hero but no one would let him.
