Anthony Hopkins As Odin In Thor Movie?
Here comes more Thor news. This time it sounds more legit. The Hollywood Reporter has mentioned that Sir Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to play Thor's daddy, Odin, in the Thor movie.
I was under the impression that Brian Blessed had been cast (as reported HERE back in June). Maybe that was just never finalized. So could the man known for liking "fava beans and a nice chianti" be the one to control the Odin Force? I have a great deal of respect for Anthony Hopkins but I don't know if I see him as Odin. He's a great actor but I see someone more...barbaric?
The addition of Hopkins will add to the star power of the movie directed by Kenneth Branagh. We already have Chris Hemsworth as Thor along with Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston appearing. I don't think we've heard firm denial over the Jude Law/Rober DeNiro rumors either. There's also the chance of Samuel L. Jackson popping in as Nick Fury.
Do you think Anthony Hopkins would do Odin justice? Can you picture the former Hannibal Lector as Thor's daddy?
I think he can carry the attitude and speech. I just don't know about him physically. This is the image of Brian Blessed I posted back in June:
Now that image is from a while back but this is more who I'd see as Odin.

Exactly, didnt know the guy but he screamed Odin
@War Killer: I agree, let's get this movie started already!
Yes, other actors look more barbaric, but can they act without making me laugh? i want somebody who can act and make me feel like he is a norse god. Tell me Anthony Hopkins with a beard staring straight at you and telling you in no uncertain terms to not mess with him wouldnt put you in your place!
" @Darkchild:
"
I'm gonna have to agree with you that Brian Blessed is just perfect for Odin & has the right presence as well displayed in Flash Gordon.
But with that beard and his size he could also pass for Volstagg no problem.
I'm so glad that stupid rumour Anthony Johnston started has been put to rest. Brian Blessed is fantastic, but among a cast of renowned oscar winners & Shakespearean actors?? Anthony Hopkins would be amazing. Not sure if he's large enough to play Odin, but that's where wardrobe, make-up & special effects come in ;)
Awww. I thought Brian Blessed was a definite. It seemed right that he was going to be Odin in a film directed by his chum Kenneth Brannagh. And as for those who say he would be out of place in a film full of high calibre actors and shakesperian thesps, the man's a damn good actor... he just tends to overact (same could be said for Anthony Hopkins; compare his performance as hannibal lector with that of brian cox in the earlier Manhunter. Cox was far more understated and subtle compared to Hopkin's later take on the role).
And as for Robert De Niro being in it, maybe that rumour started because he was in Frankenstien with Brannagh? (who starred and directed) Sorry to repeat if this point has already been raised.
If anyone seen "Legend of the fall" (yes I've seen it my mom watched it and i was young...)
you might be impressed about how well he fits when he's old in that movie
From what I've read, it sounds like Hopkins is pretty definite. The thing with the Brian Blessed 'rumor' is apparently even he was telling people he was playing Odin, on more than one occasion.
"For anyone that's seen Beowulf I actually think Anthony Hopkins will be a great Odin. I can't wait. "
i agree, he did well in that movie and pulled off the look too. im sure he can do it.
I would prefer Brian but Hopkins do it only if hits a more somber tone. The problem with Hopkins lately is he has been doing the Jack-Nickelsonn-hammy-play-for-laughs-lazy acting.
Please, for the love of God, can we keep that hack of an actor out of this movie? It's already bad enough that we've got Kenneth Branaugh, who HONESTLY thought Wild Wild West was a great movie, directing Thor. We don't need a guy that was good in, what, TWO film roles to play himself playing Odin.
Ok I was a firm believer in Blessed for the role from his days on Black Adder as a murderous medieval nobleman. However, Hopkins is intriguing and can also look the part
I also like Connery for the role, but Hopkins will do a good job. The bottom line is that all three of those men are known for overacting, and the character of Odin is loud and brash so it's a good fit all around.
I think he would make a Great Odin!!! He's got so much potential for any part he plays... He's just such a versatile actor, that can portray any character he plays very well without seeming like he's detached from the movie.. I vote Yes for Anthony Hopkins as Odin. He may not have all the muscle that an Asgardian should have. But he sure has the acting skills and that eye drawing intensity characteristic that not many other actors have. You want Odin to look strong, but more importantly. You want him to be a Strong well developed character, and I think Anthony Hopkins can very well pull that off...
" bigger question is who should play Thor, Personally I think Triple H, of WWE fame would make for an awesome Thor. and while we are on it. I think Jim Carrey should play Loki, he can be funny and menacing. just watch "23" "The part of Thor was cast months ago. He will be played by Chris Hemsworth, as G-Man states in the opening post. Tom Hiddleston is playing Loki.
As for Hopkins - awesome. Brian Blessed's physique and his personality fit much better with Volstagg, as others have said. I don't know that I could take him completely seriously as Odin.
