Star Wars 2
The story continues and the Rebel Alliance black ops group forms!
The Good
The Star Wars adventure continues! So far Brian Wood has done a great job with the first two issues of this series. He's setup the premise of this series, the fan favorite characters starring in this series, and he's also given readers something to look forward to with this black ops group searching for the Rebel spy. Wood's series has many characteristics that many fans of Star Wars love (action, character development, and a moving story). Things look really interesting in the next issue with Han and Chewbacca in the popular Star Wars site of Coruscant (the imperial center), Leia's black ops group on its first mission, and what plans the empire Colonel Bircher has in store for the crew of The Devastator.
One of the great things about this series is that we get to see another side of our favorite characters. A good example is with Princess Leia. Leia saw her home world destroyed in Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope, though she did feel sad for her home world being destroyed, it was never really expanded upon in the later movies. However, in this series Brian Wood does an outstanding job at focusing on these tiny elements that nod to the original trilogy. It shows that the characters that seem larger than life are just like us, and prone to show emotion. Which is great!
Another good thing is, instead of having the usual A-Team (consisting of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, etc) of the Rebel Alliance join together again to search for the spy, we have Luke and Leia plus a multicultural team of Rebel pilots. Granted we do have Han and Chewbacca in this series, but they are on their own adventure away from the Rebels. It is just great to see Brian Wood add other main supporting characters to this series to create a bond among different characters and learn about other cultures in the Star Wars Universe.
The artwork by Carlos D'Anda and the colors by Gabe Eltaeb is still awesome. D'Anda's artwork fits this series like a glove, even though the characters don't resemble the actors who played them, however other than that he really does the characters justice from the design of a character's hair to the star ship they fly. Eltaeb's colors do help D'Anda's characters come to life. Finally, Alex Ross is still doing an outstanding job with the cover. His lifelike representations of the actors that played the characters is just awesome.
The Bad
No complaints.
The Verdict
The team behind STAR WARS is doing a really good job at this series. So far we've had lots of things to look forward to in the next issue (i.e. Han and Chewbacca's Coruscant adventure) and an overall good interpretation of these classic Star Wars characters. Overall 5 out of 5.
