Venom's Favorite Super Hero
SIEGE: Spiderman
This is the Spiderman that I have been waiting to see again. Reed did an excellent job capturing the essence of the character in this issue. I was glad to see the Peter Parker was at the same stage as I was questioning his role with the Avengers. I never thought he really fit into the team, and didn’t care much for the way his character was handled through much of the New Avengers title. I know he is sticking around, but I hope they can give us more moments like we had in this book, instead of having his personality set to roam most of the time. Maybe all of that was just part of the backlash from Brand New Day and his own internal struggles. Bottom line though introverted Spider Man is boring.
This Siege tie-in is right up there with the Loki book in my eyes. The issue has a good deal of character development as well as some plot points. This was the book that brought us one of the battles many were hoping for Spider Man vs. Venom. I’m glad to see that the fallout from Sinister Spider Man is covered in this book, but am also glad to see Pete be pissed off about Gargan’s Spidey impersonating escapades.
Spidey gets an assist from Ms Marvel as she was came to bring the wall-crawler back to Asgard for the fight. Being all of the Ms Marvel that she is her quick solution to end the battle is an awesome panel where she reaches into the mouth of the beast and pulls Gargan right out of the suit. Of coarse, fight is not over though, the symbiote does not like to be alone and he selects his new favorite super hero to serve as a new host. Being all the Ms Marvel that she is, she is able to break free with a charge of power. Not before something revealing is mentioned by Venom. He mentions a hole in her psyche. This makes me wonder if I missed something major when I dropped Ms. Marvel out of my pull list. But the symbiote also mentions that Ms. Danvers has some strong feelings towards Pete.
There is a brief one pitch batting practice section and Carol scoops up her Spidey trophy and moves on to Asgard. This leaves us questioning their relationship and how it’s going to play out. Especially when her response to Pete is that her thoughts were complicated. Makes me wonder if we are going to see her in some of the Amazing Spiderman books sooner than later.
I thought the art was pretty sharp through the whole book and the story flowed nicely. I think it could have been a tad bit longer but it was only $2.99. This is a must read if you are a Spider Man Fan, but not much important to the Siege plot from what I saw.
