For more than seventy years the colors of Superman are blue, red and a little yellow right?

Turns out no, no they aren’t., at least not all the time anyway. Some time back while fixing the color on a faded image of an Action Comic I tried brightening up the blue using GIMP’s Hue Adjustment command, only the blue was not effecting the image of Superman, on checking I found that the “blue” part of his costume was actually cyan, checking on other issues this proved to be pretty common, though sometimes it was a mix of cyan and blue.

Here is a side by side comparison of an old issue of Action with the original on the left and what it looks like if you turn the cyan into blue on the right.

But the series would have (as far as we can tell) been the Batman Mystery Club.

And if it had been put on the air after a while they could have gotten a Bat Van and Alfred and Vicky Vale could have come along and Ace the Bat-Hound could have been introduced early and the only thing Batman would have in his utility belt would have been Ace Snacks.

Along with a brief visit on The Adventures of Superman radio show it seems there was almost a Batman radio series, only this Batman and Robin were nothing like any other version of the dynamic duo.

In the pilot for the radio series that was produced in September of 1950 Bruce Wayne is a kind of condescending pipe smoking dad who holds forth at The Batman Mystery Club where everyone knows he's Batman and he and his pal Robin (not Dick Grayson, this seems to be some guy named Robin) bust fake ghosts and mediums. You can listen to the only one they made below.

Seems there was another crime fighter called the Red Hood, but not from DC, in 1941 there was a very short lived pulp magazine called Red Mask Detective Stories that lasted for two issues and then was changed to Red Hood Detective Stories for one issue.

I have no details about the Red Hood found therein other than “Most of the stories were sluggish trivialities by obscure writers about a two-fisted crime buster names Perry Morgan who sometimes put on a red hood to do that busting.”

The art was pretty bad too.

Lawrence Welk solves a mystery in the pages of Juke Box Comics in 1948.

I don’t know, maybe he was bitten by a radioactive champagne lady and got powers or something.

I always suspected the Lovely Lennon Sisters were mutants.

It just shows ANYONE can be a hero in a comic book.
