A cross-publisher event of a series of titles put out by both Marvel Comics and DC Comics under the name Amalgam Comics, it blended elements from the two publishers' catalogs.
The 90s gave us a lot of crazy things in comics. Not all of them were bad. In a time when comic book crossovers happened frequently, we saw the ultimate crossover between Marvel and DC Comics. It was more than just a crossover, the two publishers made a new comic imprint.
Twelve issues (one-shots) were released with a second round the following year. The Amalgam Universe gave us characters that were a combination of existing Marvel and DC characters. The entire universes were combined or mashed together. Some of them were a little silly but a lot ended up being pretty cool. (You can check out the list of comics released HERE).
The chances of a return to the Amalgam Universe might be pretty slim these days but we can't help but think about the other possibilities. At Emerald City Comicon, several comic book creators were asked what Marvel and DC characters would they like to see or write an Amalgam of.
Who knows if we'll ever see another Amalgam comic. Perhaps someday it could happen. If creators and fans are interested, seems like a no-brainer. What other possible Amalgams are there, yet to be seen?
Having lived thru that event, read all the Amalgam books, and owning the Marvel vs DC TPB, I'd like to see some of the newer characters, like Avengers Academy/Jean Grey School students. Or Runaways/Captain Marvel family.
It just occurred to me the other day that the way Sue Storm is being written lately, her powers are closely related to a Lantern's constructs. Sue Storm/Carol Ferris would make sense.
I keep thinking Ironbat amalgam of ironman n batman, sounds so familiar though has it been done before?? Rorschach and Deadpool is a must!! Itsjustsomerandomguy should write that :)
I would love to suggest something with the Question (Vic Sage) who is my favorite character of all time but I'm such a DC guy I don't know enough Marvel characters to make a proper suggestion.
Wonder Woman and Wonder Man... but, there would be a name problem... and a sex problem.
So, Captain America and Wonder Woman... "American Woman" or "Captain Wonder"... crap, this has already been done.
Power Girl and Storm, because they have/had that round hole in their costume that showed that they were female... and just call her "Powerstorm"! (Kinda sucks.) So does "Stormgirl"!
uhhhh Agent Jason Barnes, the Winter Hood errr the Red Soldier errr the Red Winter. after being declared dead at the end of WW2 he was resurrected in a Lazarus Pit by Sin al Ghul to fight his orphan mentor from WW2 the brooding yet patriotic Captain Knight
Iron Fist and Arsenal would be cool, have him use his chi to power up various projectile weapons
Kid Flash and Thunderstrike (Kevin), Thunderflash- smashing people in the face with a hammer at super speed... YUP
Angelfire (Archangel and Firestorm)- guy with giant flaming wings and dark blue skin
the Star Smasher (Starlord and Atom Smasher)
Starchild (Cable and Superboy)- the future displaced son of Wonder Witch (WW and Goblin Queen) and Ironsights (Cyclops and Steel) hes got black hair with a white tuft at the front, one metal arm, his eye glows red when he uses his super strength, speed or t.p.
@Death_By_Smoke Lobo and Ghost Rider, space vengeance and dirty dealings on a motorbikeman
My local comic store said that because one movie studio owns Marvel and another owns DC that its unlikely we will even see reprints of those existing Amalgam books. But I LOVE Amalgams, love them and love to make them. I wish Marvel and DC would bring it back. they are so much fun to come up with. Here are just a small, so small, sample of what I have come up with. I have also merged Superman and the Hulk, She-Hulk and Powergirl, Batman and Iron Man, Spider-Man and Batman, Doc Ock and Mr. Freeze, Legion of Superheroes + the X-Men = Legion of X-Men, New Gods + Inhumans, etc. I came up with merging the Doom Patrol with the FF and the Chief with Dr. Doom. I also have back stories, origins, and stuff that goes with each. If you want to know any of them just ask.
AND, and, I did come up with Batman + Spider-Man = Spiderman. His story is that his mother and father were killed by Joe Chill (who becomes the Kingpin) and he traveled the world training, when he returned home he lives with his Uncle Alfred, who is a former FBI, CIA, everything, agent, and helps him in his war on crime. He wears the Black Spider-Man costume, but has no powers. He his skills like Batman does. His enemies include Clay man (Clayface + Sandman), Nightmare (Mysterio + Scarecrow), the Vulture (Penguin + Vulture), Bane the Hunter (Bane + Kraven), Lightning Bug (Fire Fly + Electro), Poison Queen (that Spider Queen character + Poison Ivy), Black Cat + Catwoman, etc. And there is this whole thing about Norman Osborn becoming the Joker Goblin, Harry becoming the Two-Face Goblin because of his father, and Dr. Quinzel becoming Harlyquin Gobin. Etc. Lots of and lots of stuff, like they said, its fun to merge those worlds.
GREAT video, fun ideas. I would like to see some of those.
I want to post more, but don't want to take up too much space. There are more on my Deviantart page here: http://artistneedham.deviantart.com/gallery/39846483
I'd love to see characters with the same name (or similar ones) amalgamated.... the Captain Marvels come to mind... as does Wonder Man and Wonder Woman....
I'd like to see Jonah Hex and Cable. Imagine a time traveling bounty hunter who is both good and evil. There are some combinations I'd like to see purely on an ability level. Sunspot and Superman could be an unbeatable combination. The Thing and Swamp Thing would become the apex of earth elementals. Honestly I'm fine with the characters we have now. I'd much rather we alter existing powers and origins to create cooler versions of super heroes. Even if Vibe crossed with Avalanche they both pail in comparison to Whitebeard. Awesome video feature!
If the two were ever united I would prefer DC characters to move into the Marvel Universe. Green Lantern in Guardians of the Galaxy would be pretty cool, if a little confusing given the creators of the corps. Batman already seems like a Marvel character anyway, but he'd have to be worked into the Illuminati and be an enterprise rival to Tony Stark. Superman would have to be depowered a little which wouldn't be a bad thing. The dynamic between Wonder Woman and Thor would be interesting! Green Arrow could have been stranded in the Savage Land, which would be the creation of Ra's al gul's and the location of the Lazarus pit. The metahuman category can be scrapped altogether and simply be referred to as Mutants. Batwing could operate as a Batman Inc. operative in Wakanda. Lex Luthor could be the head of the Hellfire Club, with the wider target of all super-powered heroes; maybe he's using kryptonite to craft a cure to the mutant problem? Worlds' Finest can incorporate Captain Marvel, and I would love to see Dr. Strange act as a mentor to Shazam. The Flash can be left alone, its just a case of getting him more pally with Spider-Man and Daredevil; maybe move to New York? He could be their inside guy at NYPD forensics. I wouldn't mind Cyborg leading the Avengers. Aquaman and Namor would be a problem but I'm sure there would be some interesting history.
There's so many valid options that it makes me a little sad this hasn't happened yet. :(
