The Green has chosen Alec Holland to be its new avatar to defend the Earth from those who would bring about the decay of the Rot.

Alec Holland was working for the Sunderland Corporation in discovering potential floral specimens in Louisiana that could become very profitable for their pharmaceutical division. Unfortunately, Holland's academic rival Jason Woodrue made it appear that Holland had gone rogue and intended to expose the Sunderland Corporation for its illegal experimentations. Sunderland's political pull forced Waller to take immediate action and had Holland's laboratory torched. Holland's mutated corpse was discovered by Killer Croc and brought to Belle Reve where Waller intended to salvage something from Holland. Woodrue and his assistant Dr. Isley experimented on Holland's corpse in the hopes of providing Waller with a biological agent that she could use to keep her operatives more compliant. When Holland awoke as the Swamp-Thing he went into mad craze and began to destroy Belle Reve. The entire prison and many doomed souls were engulfed by the swamplands and the creature that Holland had become vanished into the Green.

Dr. Jason Woodrue has always believed in a supernatural realm known only as the Green despite his academic background but he could never prove it. When Alec Holland's mutated corpse was recovered from the burning devastation that was once his lab, Woodrue knew he had found his connection to the Green. Waller allowed Woodrue and his assistant Dr. Isley to experiment on Holland's corpse at Belle Reve in the hopes of creating a biological agent that would make her Task Force X operatives more obedient. During his experimentations, Woodrue would often curse or scoff at Holland's corpse because the Green had chosen a lifeless husk to be their vessel rather than him. When Holland awoke, he went on a rampage that infected Dr. Isley, destroyed Belle Reve and caused a chain reaction of destruction that killed thousands along the Louisiana coast. Woodrue and Waller managed to escape before Belle Reve was swallowed by the swamplands. When Isley destroys Gotham with an earthquake, Waller strongarms Woodrue to create a herbicide that will kill Isley.
