    Abouet was born in Abidjan, in 1979. She moved to France with her family when she was little.

    Later, she became a legal assistant, and on the side, tried to write books for children. She quit doing both (the childrens books, because all the publishers she was in contact with, had too strict line about the books that "should" be made for kids). Then she started to write Aya. She`s been doing that ever since.
