Green Lantern #175 Review
Dave Gibbons is the perfect GL artist. He gives us classic looking Hal, great anatomy, consistency, expressions, and flare. The man is known for Watchmen fame but you can see his genius pop up in these pages too - which all lead up to a straight up battle issue, old school, and I love it. Gibbons also does the lettering which I found to be comforting. Sometimes the less names you see at the beginning, the better you feel; the more singular the vision and execution of the thing. As far as “singular” goes, it ends there, as this is a stellar team up. Len Wein and him make a great pairing and this felt like wholesome comic book entertainment at its best, through and through. Hal does great with a balance between earth and intergalactic missions and this issue focuses on the earth-Hal for the time being. We see the friendship of Hal and Barry Allen in action, and a little bit of a team up there as well. Then, as I’ve noted, we get a badass fight at the end between GL and a more obscure character The Shark. Wein and Gibbons look like they had fun telling this story and from reading their take on GL once before, fair to say it’s one of the more underrated runs in all of DC. 5/5
