Green Lantern #175 Review 2

Dave Gibbons is the perfect GL artist. He gives us classic looking Hal, great anatomy, consistency, expressions, and flare. The man is known for Watchmen fame but you can see his genius pop up in these pages too - which all lead up to a straight up battle issue, old school, and I love it. Gibbons also does the lettering which I found to be comforting. Sometimes the less names you see at the beginning, the better you feel; the more singular the vision and execution of the thing. As far as “singul...

Green Lantern #141 Review 0

Marv Wolfman writes this rather long winded issue, where not a great deal happens. This issue sees Mr. Ferris come back to take over the company and just be an all around jerk, basically. Hal and Carol hit up the Canadian wilderness on a trip and then they run into the Omega Men who decide not to kill them. Essentially that’s the gist, yet this issue took a long time to get through for such little development. The artwork was fine for me but the constant paragraph-long text boxes explaining Acti...

Green Lantern #50 Review 0

There’s no better place in this world than a back issue bin full of excellent condition, well kept comic books. Today I found myself huddled over such a thing, rifling through comics all the way back to the silver age. I combed through, intent on starting my collection again. This time around it’s Green Lantern - an all time favorite of mine. I found a couple low end key issues from the Bronze Age, and in great condition; one of which consisted of the first appearance of the Omega Men (a review ...

Captain America #695 Review 0

Cap has been put through the ringer in recent years. He, along with other icons of the Marvel U, has received no favors from Editorial. Thanks to the Marvel Legacy intiative, and Marvel *hopefully* coming to its senses, it’s way passed time the Sentinel of Liberty makes his triumphant return. And there’s no better person Marvel could have tasked with this effort than Mark Waid - a storied contributor to the character already, Waid shows he still has more to say with Steve Rogers. The artisti...

Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider #10 Review 0

Serviceable story, solid cover and interiors but overall nothing special. As a jumping on point for new readers, I found it to be rather confusing. I’m a new reader to the series, and to SS in general. I didn’t find much here, as an opener to a new story arc, to entice me. Story was a bit jumbled and confusing for a new reader. I didn’t experience a lot of urgency or threat for the main character and found Ben’s characteriZation in this issue to be lacking. I would’ve liked more insights into th...

Demon in a Bottle Review 0

How does this classic Iron Man tale about alcoholism hold up?As it stands this trade, on the whole, is pretty mediocre - save for the high point of issue 128, which is a classic issue that certainly delivers. However, the rest of the trade does little to build up Tony's alcoholism with any sort of dramatic heft. I'm disappointed that Iron Man's famed "greatest story arc" is really a plain one.David Michelinie is a tremendous writer of Iron Man, probably the character's best. He was really on to ...

Armor Wars II Review 0

Do you enjoy that rare sequel that lives up to the original? Then Armor Wars II is for you! When I stumbled across Armor Wars II, I was sure a gimmick was at play. And, the more I think about it, maybe it was. Let me explain... First things first, why this is called Armor Wars II makes zero to no sense. For the uninitiated, Armor Wars was a famous Iron Man story where his foes stole his tech and used it against him. Essentially that's the gist, anyway. That story has been told to death at this po...

Armor Wars Prologue Review 2

The prelude to the classic Armor Wars storyline deserves a read, and here's why...It's an interesting decision on the part of Marvel to title this simply "Armor Wars Prologue". Mostly because even though it's a precursor to the famed Iron Man tale, its title does little in the way of establishing itself as its own worthwhile storyline other than being just a "Prologue". Considering how enjoyable this trade is, it could have benefited from a title like "Armor Wars Prologue: The Ghost and the Mach...

Invincible Iron Man: World's Most Wanted Review 1

In actuality, I am including Part One and Two together here because it's really one story arc. (Comicvine doesn't have the whole arc as one page to review)This is an instant Iron Man classic. World's Most Wanted even sets up an interesting villain for Iron Man, but not who you'd think: Norman Osborn.Turns out the Spidey villain also makes a damn good Iron Man villain. Seeing these two go at it in a battle of wits is a sight to see. It makes me wish for more Osborn-Stark storylines because it's c...

Fantastic Four Vol. 4 by Jonathan Hickman Review 0

I was recently grabbed by an inexplicable desire to explore. Any seasoned comicbook reader knows the feeling - You crave something different to read, something outside your wheelhouse. Sometimes you get tired of your usual haul and want something entirely new.So that's when I, just like the Fantastic Four, realized I had an itch to EXPLORE.I had heard whispers of Jonathan Hickman's run on Fantastic Four. Epic whispers of grand storytelling and world-building. I hadn't read much, if any, Fantasti...

Aquaman #27 2

*Not sure why, but can't find the comicvine page for this particular issue*I'll make this brief. Very nice issue here. Jeff Parker is carrying the Aquaman torch well. I like how he writes these characters, Aquaman in particular, and the almost tug-of-war played between his human and Atlantean kin - more specifically the power plays going on between them with Arthur being caught in the middle. The art is inconsistent in this issue which cost it an even better review from me. But Paul Pelletier's a...

Hellboy Volume 3: The Chained Coffin and Other [Awesome] Stories 2

It was just recently that I opened my first Hellboy book. I wanted to try something different from what I usually read and I just had a gut feeling about Hellboy. So I picked up the first volume. I can't describe how glad I am that I did, because Mike Mignola's Hellboy has filled a comic book void that I didn't know existed - it's gothic and macabre; it's wonderfully dark mythology-building of the highest order; it's historical fiction; it's good and evil; it's a damn good time! And it just keep...

Green Lantern Corps hitting its stride 0

Van Jensen (with plotting help from Mr. Venditti) is really carving out a nice little niche for GL Corps among the GL line of books. It doesn't feel redundant or unnecessary. GL Corps is a great way for GL fans to dive deeper into the GL universe, but in a different way than the main title. To say a book like GL Corps is just "supplemental" would not only be untrue but it would do the book a disservice. It actually feels much different from the main title and plays out more like a detective stor...

Hellboy Volume 1: Seed of Destruction 0

This book was my introduction to Hellboy in the comic medium and I'm about kicking myself now for waiting so long to read it. I thoroughly enjoyed Guillermo Del Toro's film versions of this world, as well as Ron Perlman's (now I can say for sure) expert turn as the titular character. For some reason, though, I haven't gotten around to reading this work until now and man was I missing out! What Mike Mignola has created with Hellboy is something very unique; something very much of its own. A horror...

Part 1: Comedian 0

I wasn't going to bother with any of the Before Watchmen titles, but a friend lent this to me and it added a nice break from my usual stuff. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised. Brian Azzarello has carved out quite a story with Comedian. And I found a new favorite artist in J.G. Jones. His work in these pages is great; his covers, spectacular. This story, quite obviously, takes us through the lives of the members of the Watchmen before Alan Moore's beloved tale. Many fans were opposed to such an ...

All-Star Superman takes flight... Not Quite-ly 5

So after much hype and a long wait, I have finally read the first volume of Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman. I have to say, it was disappointing for me. I have never been a Superman fan, at least not since I got into comics, but I just had to give this praised run a try. I'm not opposed to liking Superman in anyway, he just has yet to appeal to me from anything I've read.As for what Morrison and Quitely have created, I had a similar problem with their collaboration on New ...

The New Face of Evil... Hal Jordan?! 10

Now that Venditti has 7 issues of Green Lantern under his belt (8 if you count Green Lantern Annual #2, the epic conclusion to Lights Out) I think it's fair to evaluate his work as a whole on this series. Usually I like to give a writer at least one story arc before doing so and in this case, considering the nature of a story like Lights Out, I wanted to see where Venditti would take it. I was half expecting these changes to the Green Lantern universe to be undone. These initial feelings have no...

Captain America: Living Legend lives up to the hype 7

This is a story a long time in the making. It was originally meant to be released in 2010, before the release of Marvel Studios' Captain America in theaters. Whether or not the timing of this now 2013 release is meant to coincide with the release of 2014's Captain America: Winter Soldier remains to be confirmed. But who are we kidding, of course it is!Perhaps far more importantly, what we can conclusively take away from this book is that it doesn't matter to me why this book was postponed so lon...

Green Lantern in good hands with Venditti 0

My first ever comic book review! So this will probably be a bit short, and not a very exhaustive one. Anyway, I'll give it my best shot...I'm going to give Green Lantern #21 4 out of a possible 5 stars. Specifically, I give Robert Venditti and his writing in this issue a solid 4/5. Very good job just diving into the action, not letting his debut be weighed down by the conclusion to Johns' run. Many writers might have felt the need to pay service to Johns' epic conclusion last issue, but Venditti...
