Who writes Gambit the best?

  1. Chris Claremont
  2. Fabian Nicieza
  3. Marjorie Liu

I've always like Fabian Nicieza's portrayal of Gambit, but all three of those have done well with him. I think Mike Carey could do a lot with him if he wanted to. What little he has done with the character has been pretty good. Also, the main character in his novels reminds me of Gambit in many ways, so I'm sure he could manage it.

@Mechanical_Ape:
I agree that Mike Carey could do a lot more with Gambit but the problem is that its all about Rogue when it comes to him.

I dunno. Too many writers.

Who's portrayal of him do you like the best?

I'd say that currently Marjorie Liu is easily his best writer. He's the fun Remy, who's not caught up in Rogue buisiness and her old lover.

Then possibly Victor Gischler as it's good to seem him in a team environment,

............ and way at the back is Mike Carey.

Yep. You post on Marvel.com all the time, right?

Yep, but not for a long time tho.

Milligan was the worst.

I can't say that I've read too much Gambit. I read some of Carey's X-Men run (Golgotha and Bizarre Love Triangle) and didn't care for all the Rogue/Gambit drama (I've made my feelings on the two of them known before). I didn't like how Rogue-centric he was in that run, I absolutely adore the camaraderie that he has with X-23 and the way that Marjorie Liu writes him.

@The Dark Huntress:
Marjorie Liu's portrayal of Gambit has gotten an overwhelmingly positive reaction from Gambit fans (at least the ones I talk to). Carey, unfortunately, always portrays him as Rogue-centric; much to the dismay of many readers. Even in Age of X, he was fawning over Rogue. Above all else, Carey bringing back the "Death" thing is what really put him in my dog house.

@jrock85: I finally got around to reading the first trade the other day. I have to say that it may be one of my top three-five books right now. It's really really good and is making me love Gambit. Why does the Death powers thing put him in the dog house? (Not asking to spark an argument, more out of ignorance than anything else).

these three are the best in writintg him

i think it goes in this order

Chris made Gambit, Fab the Man Nicieza continued the awesomeness. Liu could either totally f#ck em or make him look absolutely awesome an continue it for years. Im giving it another year before i make my decision on Liu

@The Dark Huntress:
Gambit becoming a Horseman of Apocalypse should have never happened in the first place, which is why Milligan is universally reviled by Gambit fans. Carey bringing it back was not a good way to endear himself to us. Its basically just a rehash of Angel's story and it wasn't needed for Gambit.

@Darkchild:
I'm fairly confident in Liu right now. She and Chuck Kim are the only writers who have done him any real justice since CC in X-treme X-Men.

I think something good could have been done with Gambit's Death persona, unfortunately the story has been left to linger far too long. At this point, I'd prefer to see a quick and simple solution to deal with it, since it doesn't seem like it's leading anywhere significant.

Its become a cancer to the character.

I think once Carey sorts out the Gambit/death thing, then other writers can utilize it in their stories properly.

 It might work out well for him.

If Carey actually does make "Deathbit" compelling, it will surprise the hell out of me.

@jrock85

 I bet we'll see how Rogue and Magneto react to the Deathbit situation.

With Gambit not even having an opinion.

  Here's a couple of  Q&A's from a recent Mike Carey interview:

You've got an interesting dynamic with this team in that each character has a connection with at least one other character. Xavier and Magneto have been both best friends and arch-enemies, Legion is Xavier's son, Gambit and Rogue were in a romantic relationship and we understand that Frenzy and Gambit also have a past relationship?

Yes. They've fought each other in the past, but they've shown interest in each other, too. Fabian Nicieza, back in the day, was certainly sowing seeds for a romantic entanglement and we've gotten the occasional glimpse here and there. So the team dynamic is a complicated one.

There are a lot of tensions and conflicting agendas. Just like my first X-Men team, you could argue that this will be a group that contains the seeds of its own destruction. It's fairly unstable and there are people pulling in different directions. As we'll see in the first arc, the people that have the most at stake in this team are Frenzy and Legion. There's a sense in which Legion's presence is crucial to everything that happens. At least, it's fairly crucial to how the first two arcs play out and what the goals are.

Rogue is no longer the leader of the new team in "Legacy." Is that because she's reluctant to lead a team again after her experiences in your "X-Men" run?

What we'll see in issues #250-251 is that Professor X is the guy who proposes this team and sets up its parameters. But yes, there are tensions. At least one person in the group is working slightly at cross purposes to the others. The other area of tension, of course, is that we've got Rogue, Gambit and Magneto working and fighting side by side. So there's the potential for some edgy interactions there.

I really hope he consulted Nicieza before addressing this Gambit/Frenzy relationship. Also, Am I the only one who's tired of the love triangles?

I'm amazed nobody mentioned Jeph Loeb, Howard Mackie, or at least Fabian Nicieza.

@spikevalentine
I actually did mention Nicieza in the OP.

Chris Claremont

I'd like to see what Mark Waid could do with him.

Can't believe I didn't mention Scott Lobdell.

My input for this thread - I'm still new to comics and Marjorie Liu's work in X-23 turned me into a Gambit fan. I've read some of Chris Claremont's work on him, including his introduction. Where did Fabian write Gambit?

#33 Posted by Purgy (419 posts) - - Show Bio

Fabian did the Gambit solo series. I belive it was the 1st and 2nd one that Fabian wrote.
