the rarest substance
How is adamantium rare?
it was supposed to be but every time some writer makes something that they want to sound tough they make it out of Adamantium so it's just about everywhere now

This is why there's now different "types" of adamantium isn't it? So that "pure" adamantium is still rare, while the stuff everyone else seems to use is like a secondary grade version?

Well then Adamantium in general isn't rare, unless the OP specifies "true" or "pure" Adamantium.

Agreed.
@pr0metheus: Are we talking Minecraft rules here? Because yeah, after a while it certainly feels that way.

If we are talking about minecraft,I believe moss stone is the rarest since its the only one that depends on luck getting it.
@pr0metheus: Nope, sponges are rarer.
@squares: Sponges arent rare, They are non existent without creative.
There is a difference!
Unobtanium isn't it?
Hence the name.
vibranium....isn't there only one or two sources... (black panthers kingdom.....what were they mining in the Savage Land?

Isn't that artificial scarcity? I always had the sense there is a lot of it in Wakanda but the Wakanda gov't just keeps it very tightly controlled.
@bierschneeman: this is actually true. Lol

I could swear it was explained at some point that adamantium isn't actually a natural occurring substance, it's a man-made alloy. It's just that only a few people know the formula, even if you do know it it's crazy hard and expensive to make, and if you do manage to make something out of it you can never melt it down for anything else. It's not exactly rare, so much as it's so cost-inefficient that only mad scientists and rich assholes would even bother with it.
@colonelrunaway: I read that it was a synthetic alloy too. That the formula is out of existence. Makes it the most OP'd, and overrated metal in fiction.
@monsterstomp: @colonelrunaway: this is actually correct yes. Technically speaking it's an epoxy, not a metal and yes it is created. From memory it was created in an attempt to recreate the original Captain America shield (as originally it was some special thing and the guy who made it didn't actually know how to make it - fell asleep and some unknown element entered the mix). In attempting to do so he ended up creating adamantium instead, but yes it's very expensive and difficult to use so is generally considered not worthwhile. Cheaper versions that aren't as durable then came about for plot purposes, hence the varying types of adamantium. The OP however just says "substance" which as I recall doesn't have to strictly be a naturally occurring element. Technically speaking a "substance" is able to be broken down into base elements, which can not be broken down. For example water is a substance as it is made up of hydrogen and oxygen which are elements, but this is a strictly scientific usage of the terms. I read the OP to mean any type of material (not in the sense of textiles though) which could be found or created. From the examples though, Adamantium seems to be the only one that is artificially created, I'm not sure about nth metal.
