Attempting to return to the Marvel Universe from the Ultraverse, the Black Knight Dane Whitman and Sersi are mistakingly transported to the 12th century where the Black Knight Eobar Garrington and his friend Bennet du Paris are crusaders. Whitman somehow possesses the spirit of Garrington and Paris stumbles upon Apocalypse, who releases Paris' latent mutant powers and dubs him Exodus. Apocalypse orders Exodus to kill the Black Knight as a way of baptizing him as his minion.

    Synopsis

The Black Knight (Dane Whitman) and Sersi are… somewhere. They’ve been trying to get back to their own world despite the danger of splitting themselves in half. Sersi does her best to maintain her composure, knowing their gann josin bond should be strong enough to keep the two together. They make another dimensional jump.

The Black Knight wakes up to a different name. He’s still the Black Knight, only some guy is calling him Eobar Garrington. As Eobar, he slowly recognizes the guy as his best friend, Bennet du Paris. The friends are in the middle of the Crusades. The Black Knight can’t help but think he doesn’t belong, but this feeling quickly leaves him when another man holds his ebony sword. This man is supposed to help lead the Black Knight and du Paris to some tower of power, but his breach of the Black Knight’s sword gets him banished from the two’s journey. The Black Knight is able to feel comfort in his sword, even if he still doesn’t quite feel at ease being in the Middle East.

Sersi is outside the tent and hears the exchange between du Paris and the Black Knight, as well as that between the Black Knight and the man who tried to hold the ebony blade. She realizes that she and the Black Knight have returned to their world, but they are in the past. Her Black Knight, Dane Whitman, inhabits the body of the second Black Knight, Eobar Garrington.

Worried that their bond will be lessened due to the dominance of Garrington’s presence, Sersi tries to think of a way of getting through to Dane Whitman when three men from camp notice her lurking around the Black Knight’s tent. In response to some less-than-kind words, Sersi strikes out with her powers. These, however, backfire on her and knock her out. The men take her for a witch and determine to kill her. The commotion has alerted the Black Knight and du Paris and the men are able to intervene before Sersi can be killed. The Black Knight cannot point to why he spared Sersi, only that he feels as if he should know her. Du Paris ventures that the men may be able to use Sersi’s power in their quest for power. The Black Knight rebuffs this. He also still has the feeling of not belonging, which he somehow credits to Sersi’s presence.

In the Black Knight’s tent, Sersi slowly awakens to find herself looking in the eyes of Eobar Garrington, the man she knows to be Dane Whitman. Without tipping her hand, Sersi is able to discern where and when the two have landed. A man then runs into the tent to inform the Black Knight that du Paris has deserted the camp in search of the tower of power.

In the desert, du Paris’ camel dies. The man’s resolution shows as he continues on foot.

In camp, the Black Knight prepares to go in search of du Paris. Sersi offers to join him. He balks at the notion and she does something to jump-start his mind. He suddenly knows her name and she further reveals that the two share a bond. They begin the hunt for du Paris.

Du Paris struggles with exhaustion, but he is determined; he marches until collapsing. Upon doing so, a voice enters his mind that goads him forward. Further taunting/teasing brings du Paris to his feet in time for a boulder to come soaring off a cliff. Without thinking, du Paris lashes out with an inborn power. He realizes the power he sought was actually within himself. In response to his awakened powers, a creature called the Scarab appears to battle du Paris. His sword useless, du Paris again harnesses the power within himself and disintegrates the creature. Du Paris then disappears, beginning his journey to becoming the Exodus: “the journeyman bridging the chasm between an ancient past and a distant, inevitable future.”

As the Black Knight and Sersi search for du Paris, they finally take the time to sort out their relationship. Sersi explains how she and Dane came to the Crusades and how Eobar is blocking her access to Dane. Eobar releases his hold on the Black Knight persona and Dane is able to shine through. Realizing where he is, the Black Knight determines that he and Sersi cannot stay. Too late, they realize, when the tower they initially sought finds them. The citadel of Apocalypse rises and the two are taken captive by the forever-walker.

Du Paris enters the cell in his new identity: Exodus. He takes the Black Knight before Apocalypse. Apocalypse wants Exodus to prove his loyalty by killing all old ties, starting with the Black Knight. As Exodus attacks, the Black Knight is able to get a few swipes in with his ebony blade. Exodus is bleeding from his forehead. Sersi has escaped from her cell and joins the fray in time to assault Exodus before he can fully unleash against his former friend. The assault doesn’t last long, as there is another backlash against Sersi. The damage, however, has been done. Exodus is no longer willing to kill the Black Knight. In anger, Apocalypse binds the power of Exodus and places him in a deep sleep. Apocalypse then disappears.

The Black Knight takes the body of his old friends and buries it in the Swss Alps. Two knights are given the charge over the body while the Black Knight and Sersi attempt to return home.

This is not a Black Knight comic book. Yes, he is in it. Yes, it is named after him. Throw that out the window. The only Black Knight-ness you get here is that he and Sersi are trying to return home from another dimension. This, my friends, is the origin of Exodus. I've often wondered about this man and his ties to Apocalypse and Switzerland. The answers are here, but you've got to dig. The issue starts out with a little of Sersi and the Black Knight inter-dimensionally traveling to the Crusades...
