    The Other Bat-Redhead

So last week was Batgirl and this week is Batwoman.  She's been around since the Golden or Silver age, but my only experience with her is a cameo in Batman, Inc.  So I don't know anything about her and haven't looked her up on ComicVine.  So, for this book, I am what DC wanted - a new reader.  So what do I know about her after reading this issue?

She's a lesbian and had a relationship with Renee Montoya (one of the named cops I now from Batman: TAS) Like Lois Lane, she has a father in the military.  And he gave her the tech for her base.  And her sidekick is her cousin.  Her cousin was in the Teen Titans.  (So continuity remains - as is more or less the case for all the Gotham residents) That's about it.

So while I know Bruce can't exactly trademark the Bat- moniker, I wonder why she's called Batwoman.  What is her relationship to the other Bat-people?  As a new reader I have no idea.  But it's not really crucial, so no big deal.

I am curious why she's so darn pale.  She is almost drawn as though she's meant to be a goth hero or something.

I found it quite interesting that her hair is part of her costume which puts her in the best plausible deniability when it comes to people trying to figure out her secret identity.  Although, if you're going to do that, why not choose a different hair colour?

So let's get to the meat of the issue - some ghost or something is stealing kids souls or kidnapping them - or both.  Which brings me to my biggest issue with this issue - is Batwoman in an episode of Scooby Doo?  Because either it IS a ghost which means this book has gone towards the supernatural and then I'm not sure what any Bat-person can do about that OR it's someone in a ghost costume who is just an unmasking away from "I would've gotten away from it if it wasn't for those pesky Bat-folks!"  So I'm really, really not into this enemy.  I'll probably give Batwoman until the end of this story arc.

Other things: Batman appears!  I was asking for this in Batgirl so it's nice to see it here.  I don't want Batman to hijack these books, but in Gotham Batman is never far away so I'd like to see him here and there in the Gotham books.

Finally, and this is a nitpick for 80% of the US population - the Spanish in this issue is atrocious.  I KNOW there are spanish-speaking people working at DC - I see their names as artists on various books. Williams III could have run his script by one of them rather than running it through Google Translate (which is what it looks like he's done).  There really is no excuse for that.  I don't take issue with the Isabella having two Ls - maybe she's second or third generation and her parents wanted to spell it english style.  But get the spanish right or don't have it at all.

Overall, the issue is OK.  It sets up a genuine mystery, although I'm not a fan of the villain.  You probably want to pick it up plus the next issue before deciding whether or not Ms Kane does it for you.  Personally, I'm giving it one arc.

The Story:Someone is abducting children which doesn't go unnoticed by Batwoman who begins to investigate. Batwoman is also still dealing with the loss of her sister, betrayal of her father and the training of her cousin Bette Kane.My Thoughts:I was very disappointed when Greg Rucka left DC knowing he would be absent from this new Batwoman series. His work on Detective Comics that involved Batwoman was nothing short of groundbreaking. At least one half of that team is still on this series. J.H. W...

Blood Really Is Thicker Than Water 0

I will qualify this statement by saying that I haven’t actually read all of DC’s releases so far and I probably won’t either, but Batwoman is, hands-down, the most beautiful book I’ve read this month. We’re talking legit art beautiful. I never heard of J.H. Williams III before, but you can guarantee I’ll remember him from here on out.In the entire book there are only three pages of conventional comic book paneling. Every other page is dynamically done. Nested panels, watery boundaries, action fr...
