Bruce Wayne, who witnessed the murder of his billionaire parents as a child, swore to avenge their deaths. He trained extensively to achieve mental and physical perfection, mastering martial arts, detective skills, and criminal psychology. Costumed as a bat to prey on the fears of criminals, and utilizing a high-tech arsenal, he became the legendary Batman.
I just started to read it around the Scarecrow story arc. I think it's been an OK book.
But why people hate it so much?
Because they think there are too many Batman books and as this book is average at best there should be another book about a character who is not related to Batman but the truth is there are worse books then TDK but because TDK is selling more than those worse books (probably because many people like it) everyone thinks this is the one they need to cancel.

@stronger: I would agree that the first tpb (Knight Terrors) isn't the best Batman book out there, but far from the worst. I found its stories less disapointing than the appraised Batman: Death of the Family. Then the 2nd tpb (Cycle of violance) is very dark. Its's a good read and you learn a lot about scarecrow. The 3rd (Mad) is also very dark. Maybe a little less good than Cycle of Violance. You learn a lot about the Mad hatter in this book. Some won't like it because it revolves a lot around Lewis Carroll. I haven't read the other books yet. If you like dark stories do pick them up.
