Maybe this is just too ambitious to ever pull off, but man… forget anything about 3D, because seeing BATMAN 3 shot entirely in IMAX would be an absolutely stupefying experience. And I mean that in the best way. I saw DARK KNIGHT in IMAX and the select portions shot on the format were so immersive, I actually like I was in Gotham City. Like, if I got out of my seat and hopped over the guard rail, I could actually jump into the screen, Buster Keaton-style (a no prize for whoever gets that reference.) Christopher Nolan’s spoken about how he’s not a fan of 3D, either, and how he’d love to shoot a big chunk of the third BATMAN movie in IMAX, but doubted it would be feasible. The cameras are so bulky and loud that they were very prohibitive when they shot those scenes in movie #2. They even broken one of the cameras, as I recall.
Still Wally Pfister, Nolan’s usual director of photography, recently spoke to MTV while promoting the duo’s latest collaborative effort - - a little movie you might’ve heard of called INCEPTION. The dust hasn’t even settled yet on that “mind heist” flick and the crew’s already talking about what they’re going to do next. And, of course, what they're doing next concerns the Caped Crusader. == TEASER ==
So spoke Mr. Pfister…
"I can't say until I read the [new BATMAN movie] script, but it would certainly be my preferred, amazing goal to shoot the whole movie in IMAX. I must say I'm a huge IMAX fan. I like IMAX more than I like 3-D… Chris' films are so densely layered and have so much going on visually in every way that IMAX helps enhance that because of the scope and the scale of it - - it becomes a much larger canvas to paint on. That's what we found on DARK KNIGHT."
And he also had some choice words for the third dimension…
"I'm not a big fan of 3-D… I liken it to my View-Master I had 40 years ago. Are you really getting more out of the story with 3-D? When you separate those different planes and you're creating artificial depth, it looks phony to me."
Pfister also admits that the style of shooting they used for INCEPTION would've been impossible with IMAX, so this isn't guaranteed. But he has been talking to Nolan and he does really want to one-up what they did on INCEPTION, even if he's not sure exactly what they could do, yet. Still, I'll be crossing my fingers and taking out the old rabbit's foot, because I'd really like to see this.
But how about you Comic Vine maniacs? How would you want to see BATMAN 3? In 3D... or on IMAX?
