My Review: Back to the Future (1985)

First and foremost, I have never done a review of any movie before because I never felt the urge to. But when I watched Back to the Future, things changed. And then that's when I decided to do the first review that I have ever done for any movie or television series. It makes me wonder why I chose to watch Back to the Future now, at 19 years old, when friends have been trying to get me to watch the movie since I was in middle school. Looking back at it now, I totally regret having waited this long.

The movie centers on Marty McFly, portrayed very well by actor Michael J. Fox, who is living in a home where he isn't experiencing the happiest of families. His father, George, gets constantly bullied by Biff, his boss. His mom, Lorraine, is depressed and an alcoholic. His siblings aren't exactly bright either. In turn, Marty could be heading in a similar path, but there is one person in his life who could be changing his life for the better.

To escape the family that Marty wishes wasn't, he visits his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, portrayed well by Christoper Lloyd, and underrated actor if you ask me. Dr. Brown has invented a time machine within a DeLorean car. Now that's just cool! Really! So cool!!! A time machine in a modified DeLorean?! I was just amazed at first sight when Dr. Brown introduces the machine. Sadly, Marty witnesses Dr. Brown getting killed by the Libyans, whom he had stolen the plutonium to fuel the time machine. Bad doctor! Marty accidentally goes back in time to 1955 while trying to race away from the Libyans in the modified DeLorean. Things get really interesting from here on out. Trust me! It gets even better and better!

Marty meets his parents, who are only teenagers at the time. Worse, his arrival to the past changes some things that were supposed to stay the same, such as taking the hit from a car that was meant for George. Lorraine has a crush on Marty after taking him to her house following the accident. Wow, it's so weird and cute at the same time that Lorraine likes Marty, who happens to be her son. I think it's so awkward for the both of them, but hey...love is love. You can love anybody, it's just natural and part of our nature.

Marty then tracks down the younger version of Dr. Brown and after explaining the whole situation to him, he realizes that he altered the first meeting between his parents to the point that they never meet since Marty got hit by the car and not George. Oops, that's not good! Dr. Brown informs Marty that he has to find a way to get his parents to meet and fall in love or he and his siblings will cease to exist. Now things have gone from serious to urgent and worth your life serious!!!

The problems don't stop there for Marty as another problem emerges when Dr. Brown states that there is no plutonium from his time and that the only way Marty can go back to the future is a lightning strike that is bound to happen in a few days at the town's courthouse. While Dr. Brown is busy with his plan to get Marty back to the future, Marty has to undertake the complicated process of getting his parents to meet each other and fall in love. Basically Marty has to play the role of Cupid for his own parents. Sounds cool huh? No, not really ;) Matters only get worse when he unintentionally gets into conflict with Biff, who is bullying George, just like in 1985. Biff isn't alone and has a gang to back him up. If I were Marty, I would've been really nervous.

Marty develops a plan to get his parents to meet at the high school play, but Biff ruins the plan when he attacks Lorraine and is drunk in the process. Terrible combo. Being a jerk and a bully equates to troublemaker for life.

However, George comes in to save the day when he punches Biff in the face and knocks him out, saving Lorraine. He must've channeled his inner Mike Tyson for that punch, because it resulted in a KO. Anyway, his parents fall in love and attend the play together. YAY! Now Marty can focus on going back to the future, if ya know what I mean, right? I hope so.

After a serious of misfortunes that almost prevented Marty from returning back to 1985, the awesome duo are successful in the plan and the lightning strike sends Marty and the DeLorean back to 1985. But wait, there's more.

Marty returns to find his family wasn't the depressing and dysfunctional family that he had left to go to the past. George is a successful writer. Lorraine is happy and physically fit. His siblings are successful. They are the happy family that they should've been prior to Marty going back in time. It's a happy ending, which I was so hoping for. Marty and his family deserved better and they got it.

The cool ending hints at Back to the Future II when Doc comes back from 2015 with the DeLorean and takes Marty and Jennifer with him for another round of time traveling adventure!

*SPOILER WARNING! Please do not read unless you already saw the movie!!!*  This movie's one of my all time favorites. It's a combined mesh of sci-fi, romance, comedy and action/adventure, pulled off in the most perfect manner I could possibly fathom. There's no real age restriction on this movie disregarding some brief moments of heavy language and some somewhat suggestive themes (basically most of the scenes with Biff Tannen in them). The plot is pretty simple to connect with even with younger c...
