Who is the Best Flash?

The finest of the family of the fast.

The family that runs together, uh... arrives together.
The family that runs together, uh... arrives together.

Who’s the best Flash? The greatest ever? For a name that brings with it the reputation of fastest man alive, this mantle hasn’t actually experienced that much turnover in all the decades since FLASH COMICS #1 hit spinner racks. Barry Allen has, of course, returned just recently, but Wally West’s total tenure still isn’t actually that much shorter than his. It’s even a bit of trip to get my mind around Barry’s comeback, since he was dead and gone and Wally was the Flash, for sure, since the very year I was born. The scarlet speedsters’ legacy is a little unique amongst the major heroes’ in this respect, because the answer to who’s the best Flash isn’t as clear cut as it is for, say, Green Lantern or Captain America. Actually, once you start comparing and contrasting all the Flashes to figure that out, you’ll also start noticing that this family of the fast is unique in a lot of ways.

Between Johnny Quick, Jesse Quick, Max Mercury and XS, there are too many names to cover all the speedsters, so I'll keep it to the Flashes. Though, maybe I'm then remiss for not including Flash Gordon or Flash Thompson here?  == TEASER ==

JAY GARRICK

(First Appearance: FLASH COMICS #1)

The uniqueness starts with Jay who, between all the retcons he's undergone, has always been more like a local hero than a super one. He first used his super-speed to be a star college football player and, when he did turn to crime fighting, he handled small potato threats like blackmailers and then didn’t even bother trying to keep a secret identity. Look at his costume. Without the flair of the helmet and the winged boots, It’s really not too far from being just a pair of jeans and a long-sleeved shirt. He's thus looked a little out-of-place whenever he's tagged along for the really far-out, metaphysical threats that heroes of later generations have taken on. In a lot of ways, he's almost like a weekend warrior whose hobby would be taken and turned into a profession by his successors.

BARRY ALLEN

(SHOWCASE #4)

Barry's debut marked the dawn of the Silver Age and, out of all the DC heroes who were active then, he's really the most emblematic of the era. Hal Jordan and Ollie Queen may have gone through dark periods, but Barry's noble character has never been compromised. Actually, he’s probably the most well-adjusted hero out of the whole pantheon. Where Superman went through 60 odd years of courtship with Lois Lane before making it official and Batman's had one volatile love affair after another, Barry married Iris West only a few years after his debut and established a family legacy that's repeatedly been shown to survive well into the future. Often stressed to be a simple Midwestern guy doing right for simple reasons, Barry is very much a rock of stability (even as he's moving constantly.)

WALLY WEST

(THE FLASH #110, Vol. 1)

The unusual streak continues with Wally, one of the few major heroes I can think of who's gone through a measurable arc over his career. Like a child actor, he started off as a chipper sidekick, turned into a bit of a jerk as a young man (after he gained the mantle post-CRISIS) and then went on to grow in both power and character as an adult. He was the one who discovered the Speed Force and he was the one who tapped into it to ratchet his abilities up higher than anybody really could've imagined. I was almost going to include him twice on this list by spotlighting the Dark Flash, Wallace West - - his grizzled alternate future doppleganger who briefly replaced him during one of his deaths.

No Caption Provided

BART ALLEN

(THE FLASH #92, Vol. 2)

The theme of acceleration goes hand-and-hand with all of this, so it’s probably appropriate that the fourth Flash’s career would seem very much like a fast-forwarded recreation of the third's. He went from Impulse/Kid Flash to actual Flash rather quickly, by comparison, and had a brief (only 13 issues long!) run with the mantle before, well, running into his own demise. Did he get a fair shake? It’s hard to say. I’ll confess to finding him more appealing as a bratty junior speedster with a short attention span over a more mature adult, but that could've changed with time. Considering we have five Green Lanterns flying around, I'm sure he'll another shot eventually.

No Caption Provided

JOHN FOX

(THE FLASH 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL)

Another Flash to buck convention, John’s a future successor who wasn’t just part of a one-off story - - he’s shown up repeatedly and become an established part of the mythos. What's more, his already-crazy origin in the 27 century got a wilder twist in DC ONE MILLION when he ran ahead to the even-farther future of the 853rd century. While he’s got a cool, spacy costume and a shock of gray that makes him (pun intended) a bit of silver fox, the de facto future Flash is probably the least likable of this bunch (or the one with the biggest personality problems to surmount, at least.) A violator of time travel law, his career actually began out of jealously as he tried to steal Wally’s life.

Who deserves the mantle of being the best Flash and why?

Barry Allen.....  And that includes comparing him to all the other "Flashes" you listed.  He is also better than any other speester in DC or Marvel.  He is better than any of the speedsters in the indys (the ons I know of anyway).

And for those that say Wally found the "Speed Force" remember Barry made the Speed Force by generating the power for it with every step he ran.

I have been around comics for awhile, and when he was written correctly I think Wally West was the best. The first few years after he took over were the best. He seems more contemporary and approachable. More of an every mans hero. Toward the very end of his tenure as the main Flash the writing slacked off. (Twins that were never babies?)
But all in all, I got to go Wally. Plus, I have known him longer having followed him since the Teen Titans.

I think Barry is great character and hero, but the best Flash has got to be Wally for the obvious reasons stated in the article.  The dude took on the Flash mantle and made it his own.  Besides, look where he went thanks to his discovery of the speed force.

I would normally say that Barry Allen is my favorite Flash, but Wally West really did a great job in filling his shoes and coming into his own.
I have to say, now the most deserving should be Wally.

Wally. Introduced us to the Speed Force, and showed us what it could do. Also, overall nice guy.  The "Barry" that they've brought back has been pretty whiny and naggy.

The first is always the best.  They've never really improved on the template laid down by the Golden Age Flash.  Besides, the original Flash spent his formative years putting the beat down on Nazi's. It doesn't get any cooler than that.

I'd be lieing if I said I cared about any of the other Flash's so I won't, Wally West is the Flash I grew to know and while Jay & Barry may be to the liking of other Wally is the only one I care about and Barry return and takeover all of sudden just sorta feels forced on me and I won;t have none of that

It comes down to Barry Allen and Wally West.

Even D.C comics can't figure out what do to with the two. Wally is awesome...but has a family now and I believe they retired him. Barry is back and doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Its like will Wonder Woman die or retire and give it to Donna or Cassie.

I like Wally!!

@Demas:
I hadn't read Rebirth to be honest, but yeah, his actions in there definitely seem to be... questionable, almost un-Barry-like.  I suppose one could chalk it up to poor writing and characterization, but yes these things are now part of the character's mythos and can't be ignored.

I do maintain though that Barry doesn't have the same penchant for using the Speed Force for time-travelling as other speedsters have, and therefore it makes sense that he's not only reluctant, but afraid to screw with the timeline that much, even if it means his family has had to endure multiple hardships.

I don't think Jordan's return was necessary, but of course I'm partial to Kyle. I think Rebirth was done just because John's loves Jordan and wanted to write him. He was doing fine as the Specter IMO. The Corps Wars, etc. all could've been done with minor adjustments without him being back. I've enjoyed the stories thus far, but I still gotta admit I don't like that they stemmed from his rebirth.

I do agree that it was more vital to current GL tales than Barry's rebirth. I still feel that his resurrection was Johns fan fiction, folk. I'm an 80's baby and I love Barry, but Wally's had the better writers/stores as many before me have said. I'm disheartened that he's been shafted to bring back Barry. That being said I'm loving the current Flash run, BUT I can't help but wish Wally was back on the scene. Hopefully he'll play a role in Flash Point.

Not just some, even Barry himself isn't sure if he killed Thawne out of bloodlust (that he wanted Thawne dead as opposed to just stopped), see the image I posted.

The Secret of Barry Allen is also another mistake Barry admits.  He had Zatanna brainwash The Top (who in turn brainwashed many of the Rogues) and instead of correcting it during his lifetime, he left the task to Wally.

In Rebirth, Barry kills two people and doesn't blink.  He then seeks to commit suicide by running into the Speed Force despite everyone wanting to help him.  Finally, despite finding out all this heavy stuff about the Speed Force and knowing it's something that can be studied, manipulated, and mastered (the way Savitar or Thawne or Wally did) and that he's responsible for putting this reality-altering power out there into the universe, Barry more or less ignores this revelation and takes no steps towards taking responsibility for the awesome power he's giving to time traveling mad men like Zoom.

Two time travel related issues which are probably more a reflection of unintentional bad writing than morality (inspired by a post by someone on another forum), but: 1) If we take the characterization of Barry in Rebirth seriously, then he spent his whole adult life obsessed with the murder of his mother spending years pouring over her cold case, but he never thought to use his powers to just see who killed his mom? 2) Why should Barry stay in this time?  Just because that's when Zoom resurrected him?  Barry's personal timeline ended after COIE, why wouldn't he go back to his young wife and raise his two kids rather than leaving her a widow for 20+ years, letting his kids grow up fatherless and dying leaving their families, and returning to a timeline where he's been absent for years?  Subjecting his family to all that at Zoom's whim seems to be rather immoral.

Preach brother, I'll admit I'm partial to wally because I grew up with him. BUT he is the best Flash for all the reasons you said. I really Wish Geoff Johns left well enough alone and kept Wally as the Flash, the only reason he brought him back was because he's partial to Barry. Same reason he replaced the much more interesting Kyle with Hal.

Barry for me.  He does seem, as Pinchuk says, to be the most uncompromisingly "good" Flash out there.  That's something I find reassuring and refreshing in an age where every character has to have such huge dark arcs and personality flaws.  Barry's flaw seems to be the fact that he WANTS to be everywhere at once, to do EVERYTHING, but despite his speed he just can't.

Some might question his killing of Eobard Thawne, but I think that's the only time he's really made a morally qustionable action.

I guess what I'm saying is... Barry's my favorite, and I think he is the best Flash.

Barry was a better Flash in a superhero way but Wally West in some ways is more entertaining to read as you see his character develop from a rude teenager to a responsible adult. Barry's character hasn't been developed as much because un the silver age everyone has the same personality but what Geoff johns has done with him so far defines his character already and he is very likable as soon as you read him. Barry Allen is better because he created the speed force. I'd say their equals as heroes by now which barry even admits. Wally West is going to go on to be better than him because when Barry was Wally's age he had no big story arcs to look back on.
