Marvel Reveals Who Will Be Joining FIRST X-MEN, What It Will Be About, and More

The creative team for Marvel's upcoming new limited series discuss what readers can expect from the book this August.

Last week Marvel teased their upcoming FIRST X-MEN series, and earlier today the publisher gave us some more information and insight on the upcoming new series from writer Christos Gage and artist Neal Adams. Starting in August, Marvel will launch the limited series that will follow the days before the X-Men became the X-Men; at least that's what we gathered from Neal Adams' pitch for the series.

No Caption Provided
At the beginning, Stan and Jack were experimenting. You had Professor X, bald and in a wheelchair. These strange kids already in costume. It seems to me like this was not the beginning of the story, but the middle…Of all the mutants on Earth, Professor X could easily pass as a human. Why would he want to get involved in this? Maybe all this was going on before Professor X was Professor X...when Professor X was a teenager. Maybe mutant kids were getting abused by the military, by the government. Somebody would have been looking out for them, but maybe that person came to Charles Xavier, realizing he couldn't protect these kids. That was my pitch.

The days before the X-Men were X-Men? Before Xavier was in the wheelchair? When he was just coming to grips with his mutant powers and what they really meant? It sounds interesting enough. The good news is that fans will likely be seeing many familiar faces, too, like Wolverine and Erik Lensherr, for example. Gage and Adams will also be exploring the relationships between these characters and the X-Men team. The book will answer questions like "why was Wolverine's first team a failure?" for example, and much more. Gage also added some background on the series, giving fans the time period (before the "first X-Men" team was created. Gage also evaluated the era and the society the X-Men were living in at the time.

== TEASER ==
It takes place before the original X-Men and at a time when the government was snatching mutants up and doing scary things to them. Logan notices this and thinks somebody needs to look out for them. He recruits Sabretooth, who asks 'Why?' and so he pays him. Professor Xavier is a young man studying at Oxford, who's engaged and wants nothing to do with this…They recruit this guy Erik Lensherr who is out there killing Nazis...

Sounds to us like the script for this series will be borrowing a bit from the most recent X-Men movie, 'X-Men First Class' -- at least where the idea of the "years before the first X-Men team" are concerned. Other things to expect from this new series is: hobo-Submariner, fighting amongst teammates, new characters ("Bombastic Aghast") and much more. In case you're wondering, this series is cannon and will (according to Editor Nick Lowe), "be key to Wolverine's relationships with other characters."

This is firmly set in continuity. This is not a What If. This is canon. This is key to Wolverine's history and his relationships with other characters. This will answer questions that have been out there for decades.

What do you think of the plans for this new series? Are you looking forward to the release of the book this August?

@FinnVarra: the birds of prey were together for years before the team was ever actually referred to as birds of prey. the title doesn't necessarily mean anything.

It's quite clear that this is to be the story of where the X-men originated. It doesn't matter what the team calls themselves, this is being pitched to the reader as the First X-Men team. The implication of the story is that without this team, the original X-Men wouldn't have formed. It completely undermines Prof. X as the founder.

Sounds like a bad idea to me.... Don't like the idea of a X-men before the X-men...

So the pitch doesn't convince me.... also, for what I have seen lately, I'm not a fan of Neal Adams recent work... And seeing these covers it doesn't convince me otherwise... It all feels rushed and out of proportion. Quite a shame... because his original stuff from the old days are amazing...

(and also I have to commit ... his last interview on wordballoon left me a bad taste in my mouth... I call it a "ALL PRAISE NEAL ADAMS BY NEAL ADAMS" interview ;) hehe )

I was scrolling down to say exactly this. I honestly don't understand why Wolverine has to be in EVERYTHING related to the X-men. I get that he's a popular character but it's a little nuts. I liked him too at first. But it's been years since I crossed over from "He's Cool!" to "Oh my God enough with the Wolverine already".

I honestly wish they'd kill him off. But no, they're making a second (or should I say 5th) Wolverine movie.

This X-Men team is something like Avengers 1959.Not that bad writing but the artwork won't be cool and eventually you don't need it.

i really hate how everybody hates on a book before it comes out and they have not even read it. if it doesn't sound like your cup of tea then don't buy it. but don't whine about it.

Dude.. I'm usually the one saying this statement to people after they start wining about this book or that one. However, this is a little different. They are basically attempting to change original story and the legacy of a franchise that some people on here have been following for years, others, even their whole lives. I have been an X-Men fan since I was 6 -- so the past 20 years now. This changes the original story and the timeline of the entire X-Men franchise to a pretty large degree. That's a hell of a hard pill to swallow for most people, myself included. Now, Professor X isn't the originator of the X-Men concept. Cyclops isn't the first X-Man. The first five we've always known, aren't actually the first five. The list could go on for days.

my problem with this is that nobody has even read the story yet. just because these characters get together doesn't mean that they are going to be the x-men. they may just group together and leave after the particular adventure is over. they may not even refer to themselves as the x-men. i do agree it could potentially change some things. but comics are being retconned or plain rebooted all the time. look at the new 52 from dc. seems to be very successful. i have read the x-men since i was nine. so i have read comics a bit longer than you. it doesn't really bother me at all. what if the story turns out to be great? i am not saying i think it will. but i certainly am not going to judge it. we don't know what is going to happen in this story. so far all we know is a few of the characters get together before the start of the x-men. if it bothers people so much then just don't read it. but don't hate on it and not even read a page of it. it is just plain silly to do so.

I think it's pretty clear they are trying to imply that the FIRST X-MEN were Wolverine, Sabretooth, Magneto, an angry woman with a big belt, and a dude wearing a hoodie. Sure comics are being rebooted, but that doesn't mean it's cool with everyone. DC did it because their sales were slipping, and the reboot allowed new fans to get in on the ground floor. That stuff is great for new fans; however, old fans or longtime fans can be easily disgruntled by things of this nature. I am personally annoyed by this series for many reasons, but here is one example... I didn't like Cyclops when I was growing up. In the last decade, writers have been changing his character as the mutant landscape too was changing. Cyclops has since become one of my absolute favorite characters in all of fiction. Blah blah I love Cyclops, but what I'm saying is that Cyclops was the first X-Man and now he has risen to his ultimate potential and not only become leader of the X-men, but practically the mutant race. Those bullet points of his character are important. Stories like this change things like that. Some people don't care. Others get angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Hate to say it but Adams is past his prime. and this looks pretty awfull. Sabretooth, Wolverine and a few nobodies? We already know Wolverine and 'Tooth were on team X or something together before the X-men started. How much more nonsense can Marvel shoe horn into the characters past? And as far as I remember Wolverine never popped his claws in any of the pre X-men stories other than Origin. Team X was all guns and such.

This is gonna suck.

And it's rare I say that without givin' something a fair chance.

Even more evidence that I should drop X-Men. Concentrate on the course of the current direction-less books Marvel, and stop trying to capitalize off of the success of the prequel movie by retconning an already interesting story. Then you'll have to explain why none of these characters ever mentioned it despite meeting each other countless times over the past forty years.

@TheBuck: Nah, man, this is just the tale of the X-Men before the X-Men before the X-Men.

Also, is that Magneto with the weight belt and the slick-diamond haircut? Sheesh, that's a bad look.

However, "Nazi Hunter" Magneto is just screaming to be made into an action figure. Get on it, Hasbro!

Wolverine is my dude and but seriously, just let him be.

He doesn't have to be in EVERY X-men book; just leave him to Wolverine and the X-men and AVX. Yall should focus on bring back his clone/daughter X-23 and her her own series again so we can have her take his place in some storylines to give his character a break.Seeing him so much is starting to be redundant and annoying.

Or maybe, just cool off on X-men for a while (except WATX of course, but with more focus on the students) to think up of better stories.

I understand why everyone considers this to undermine the first team from the 60s. Could it be that Pro. X becomes the first x-men based on the events from this series? That seems to make sense cannon wise as it leads into uncanny x-men.

Not too excited about this...actually not at all. Why all the hate for Charles Xavier? He has been completely forgotten in the X-titles for practically the last decade, (not-with-standing the whole Genesis Shi'ar War debacle) and now - they're saying that it wasn't even him who formed the "First X-men" it was Wolverine, Sabertooth and Magneto...yeah, because they are so much more sympathetic characters. I wonder why "anti-hero's" are such the rage, and Axel Alonso has such a hard on for them...Personally, I'm over Wolverine and Sabertooth's demented, convoluted (one is from a mutated homo-wolf species the other a mutated homo-cat one, yeah right) dead and brought back again - relationship and how they were in EVERYTHING Marvel 80 years ago...The next thing we're going to find out is that Peter Parker is actually one of their sons, (or perhaps he's from a mutated homo-spider species)? Schism didn't make any sense to me, and after AVX there's a good chance I'm done - finding it hard to care when they keep changing the past to fulfill some fan-boy editors idea of what the fan base wants...

It's a completely harmless five issue mini series, they're not retconning anything, Adams got asked will Havok be in it and he said no, because Havok wasn't around then. It's very much in keeping with continuity, just filling in gaps. I understand if you don't like the idea or the whole 2 pages of art we've seen, but that's really no excuse to crap all over it, just like a lot of people are doing with AvX, even though we're only a third of the way through it. The negativity on these forums is pathetic and detrimental to the community.

I don't think honesty is detrimental to the community. Over-exposure and fanservice is worse for the future of this franchise, IMHO.

Other fans are having similar reactions, so it's not just a ComicVine thing. Here are a few reactions from io9 (which doesn't run that much coverage on comics in the first place), just to show that other readers are not too keen on this idea either: http://io9.com/5910255/neal-adams-to-draw-the-first-x+men-a-miniseries-starring-wolverine-and-a-nazi+hunting-magneto

The community is doing fine and doesn't require any hand wringing just because some criticism floats around. While you may want to give this series a chance, other readers in the community (myself included) have a perfectly valid right to voice our opinion in this community-based forum when we smell a potential stinker coming along. That's not bad for the community. What's bad for the community is rewarding lazy stories/crossovers whose creative teams don't care about certain characters and can't write with dollars/card swipes because that indulges cash-grabbing habits that keep churning out bad stories/needless cross overs.

Oh and....

How long before Marvel's gonna have to write out Magneto's WWII origins? He wasn't frozen in ice like Cap so what age exactly are him and Chuck now?

AND!

Put Chuck back in a chair. With Bab's back as Batgirl there're no big name wheel chair bound characters. For me that was the big appeal with Chuck. He was in the chair but had the most powerfull mind in the MU (at the time at least). What's next? Give DD back his sight?

I used to be a huge Marvel fan. Now I have to remind my self to spell the word with a capital "M" :(

I'm with Pheonixguy.

Wolverine with his old memory issues on this team is one thing but 'Tooth with their already confusing history and Magneto who we all thought didn't meet him 'till much later just seem silly to me.

X-stuff pretty much lost me after Wheddons Astonishing. like so much Marvel puts out they've lost their supporting cast and the stories have become too event driven. Bring back some human antagonist and make it about mutants issues again. With out that the whole idea's lost anyway.

And no more changes the past. It only complicates the present.

What can we say? The fan's are angry. They've had enough let downs :(

To be honest my biggest complaint with "the house of ideas" these days is that every new idea involves turnin' a supporting cast member super.

Let's do the list...

Over in HULK General Ross is now RULK, Betty is She-RULK and Rick is A-Bomb.

In Iron Man Pepper is Rescue.

Over in the Spider-verse Flash is Venom.

Who's next? Aunt may or Mr Abrogast as Supergran?

The X-stuff killed off some of their best support. Senator Kelly and moira at the very least and I can't think of any human characters appearing in the X-books anymore.

They're maybe more but I've dropped most of the Marvel books I used to pick up. Even ASM. And I'm a huge Spidey fan :(

20 bucks says Deadpool makes an appearance, but Im with a lot of you in that Wolverine doesnt need to be in every book Marvel puts out. Plus the idea the Xavier got the idea for the X Men from him poos on quite a bit of who Professor X is to me.

Is good for the community? No, it's pathetic and offputting for newcomers who come to talk about comics, not hate on every single title X company publishes or Y artist illustrates.

Here! Here! Thanks for having my back, dude!

Which is perfectly understandable. I wasn't suggesting we purge anyone who voices criticism, criticism is good, but posting things like 'this is f'n s***' (without even reading the material) is ridiculous, but silly me for thinking the community would be a nicer place without it.

In protest, everyone should go buy the crap out of Avengers Academy. That series deserves to last WAY longer than it will, and certainly way longer than another X-Book.

Ido kinda agree with you there. People need to find a better way to express themselves. Not sure if they spelt it out properly of *ed it in the original post but still....

:(
