JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED Launches in April

JUSTICE LEAGUE CANADA gets a new name, but it's still the same book.

Mike McKone variant cover
Mike McKone variant cover

Writer Jeff Lemire announced on his blog today that his new book, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED will be hitting store shelves this April. Lemire, along with artist Mike McKone, were originally slated to turn JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA into JUSTICE LEAGUE CANADA, but after some talk with DC, they all agreed that just changing the title to "Canada" may be a little limiting, so they're starting a whole new series instead This still means that JLA will be ending in April.

As a result, JLA will be ending in April and my book will become a brand new ongoing series called JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED! Justice League United will launch in April with an extra-sized Zero Issue followed by #1 in May. And the first storyline will be titled: Justice League Canada. The team will still be based in Canada and the book will still introduce a brand new First Nations Canadian superhero to the DC Universe. More details on this new character, her origin and her powers, will be released in the weeks to come.

The team will have their headquarters in Moosonee, Ontario and will be made up of these members: Animal Man, Green Arrow, Stargirl, Martian Manhunter, Alanna Strange, and Hawkman.

So make sure, this April, to check out the newest DC on-going series, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED!

What do you guys think about this new series and the name change?

@the_tree: seriously, where the hell is Baz? They made such a big deal about him, then wrote him off to the background.

He's Geoff Johns creation and once he left the Green Lantern family no one else has decided to tackle him.

@jonny_anonymous: Definitely. He had a great introductory arc and I'd like to see more of him. He was severely underutilized in JLA.

Maybe Jones didn't want to share?

There's been a DC announcement pretty much every day this week, I wonder if there saving something big for Friday.

@jonny_anonymous: I remember reading about a leak of DC's post-Forever Evil plans, which included a new female Nightwing (Higgins recently announced his departure), a 52 issue weekly series (Futures End), and a new Young Justice series featuring Aqualad and Miss Martian (Teen Titans announced to be ending). There was also a rumor of an Outlaw Justice series with Dick leading a team in which heroes are banned in a post-Forever Evil America, which could explain why JLA moved north of the border.

Maybe, just maybe Baz is in this Outlaw Justice series, and DC is soon to announce it.

like the line up, seems like the Strange's will have a feel like Hawkman and Hawkgirl did in the earlier appearances. Seems like DC is slapping Justice League on all their books like Marvel and The Avengers franchise lol

This roster is FREAKING AWESOME!!! Admittedly, I really liked the JLC name but JLU seems alright too. Not sure what they're uniting but it sounds elite. Now if only the JL will rightfully change their name to JLA all will be well in the world!

Hahahahaha I would buy the s**t out of a Justice League Canada book! Please for the love of all that is comics, make them have their meetings at a Tim Horton's.

So is Manhunter ditching the JL of A or is he splitting his time? Anyone hear anything about that.

JLA?

The Justice League of America. He's in the other book too. The one with Catwoman and Hawkman. Actually Stargirl is in that too.

It's going to be cancelled and replaced with Justice League United

It's sarcasm.

I just don't get why does it have to be in Canada? Especially seeing how Stargirl & Green Arrow are in the team, they have nothing to do with Canada.

Because why not? There is like a thousand superhero teams in the US so why not have at least one in Canada?

This looks like DC is trying to replicate Marvel's success with "Guardians of the Galaxy."

Isn't that what the Lantern titles & Storm Watch are for?

@the_tree: seriously, where the hell is Baz? They made such a big deal about him, then wrote him off to the background.

They should just kill him off and give the ring to a teenager & then out that teenager & a not yet introduced aqualad in a book with kid flash ( who should seriously change his name ) red robin, wonder girl, superboy & the rest.

I find it clever how Lemire incorporates characters he's writing solo series for into this, like GA and AM.

@2cool4fun: DC could do with some Canadian heroes it took them like 70 years to have one Superhero from Canada and they just changed Booster Gold. Some people like to have a character or a team be from their country.

@perfect_10: by one issue you mean 28-30? + GL 28 & RL 28 & 29, but yeah i know what you mean, I wish it would last a bit longer, if they spent all this time since issue one of her comic on her rage, they could have let her rage as a red lantern a bit more before letting Lemire calm her down.

Well, this is better. But I think the creation of Justice League of America was sort of unnecessary in this case. I don't like when titles end after a few issues just for the sake of ending them.

The Justice League books are going to get very interesting. This is a hell of a character line-up for a League. I also like the name a lot better. Manhunter in control of his own League is going to be wonderful. Hopefully this will lead to his own stand-alone with his own rouges gallery.

I'm going to buy this book for two reasons only:1. Lemire is writing it and so far everything from him has been brilliant in my opinion and 2. He is adding Animal Man to the team which means he is continuing his adventures in this book and we will be seeing more awesomeness from the combination of Jeff Lemire and Animal Man.

So what we have here is

  • A brilliant roster comprised of 3 of my favourite superheroes - Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow and Supergirl - along with other heroes like Hawkman, Animal Man and Stargirl who I like
  • A much better team/series name for the book encompassing an international as well as alien members thus setting the scene for their adventures and tone of the book much better.
  • A unique setting in Canada away from other heroes whilst expanding the scope of the DC Universe in its heroes and its sci fi direction seeming soooo good!
  • The incredible trustworthy, credible and talented writer of 3 of DC's best series known as Jeff Lemire writing the storyline and promising to bring character interactions that won't be overshadowed by the zany superhero plots and adventure? And an awesome artist too?

Yeah I think I might just be sold on buying this book. It has everything I could want for a team book and it uses lesser known B tier heroes getting their time in the sun. I was tempted to buy Booch and Manapul's Detective Comics but this series is more likely to go under if readers don't support it. Besides, with a set up like this, I'm definitely on board for buying it! :D
