Old school reveiw: Venom Style!
Hailing from the early 90's is my first ever comic, and one of my favorites, Venom: Lethal Protector #1, Gold Edition. While both the normal and gold edition are both awesome, the gold edition has bonus pinups and a gold foil cover. I must say, I received this issue at the tender age of nine and from then on was hooked to the world of Marvel. Being the first of many Venom spin-offs, this was probably one of Eddie Brocks best.
After the events of the Amazing spider-man in which Spider-man saves Ann Weying, Venom decides to make a truce, and swing into San Francisco. Once there, he does the usual Venom thing, save innocents, try to build a hero rep, all that good stuff. While back home in New York, Peter contemplates if letting Venom go rogue to save his own skin was really the right thing to do. After Heading to San-Fran sporting his Spider-suit, he makes his way around town to see if he can catch Venom. After a while he then runs into Brock who's punishing trouble makers and protecting homeless in the park. A fight insues between the two as Brock tries to tell Spider-man what he was doing, when he is suddenly wisked away to a secret underground city where the homeless live.
This issue gets a 4.5 in my book. The artwork by Mark Bagley is fanominal for that time period, and his front back cover featuring Eddie morphing into Venom on the back is astounding! The story by David Michelinie throughout the Lethal Protector arc is one of the best Venom story lines ever. Featuring letters from both Stan Lee and editor Danny Fingeroth really makes this issue feel special, and holding the limited gold edition is just great! Hopefully if you want to partake in this issue, go look through the back issues of your local comicbook shop, and as always, nice readings and enjoy.
