What are your thoughts of this new character from Issue #0 of Green Lantern? Honestly I like the character already.
Simon Baz
Character » Simon Baz appears in 427 issues.
Simon Baz is an officer of the Green Lantern Corp's Space Sector 2814 and was a member of Steve Trevor’s Justice League of America. He received the fused power ring of Hal Jordan and Thaal Sinestro after their power rings presumed them both dead during the events of Rise of the Third Army.
Your Thoughts on Baz (Green Lantern)
I liked the brief history they gave us with the racism that he's experienced post 9/11. He seems that he'll be a cool character and that he'll bring something to the table that many heroes haven't been able to.
Bring it on DC. This guy is awesome, and I want to see more of him.
Next I want an Earth Indigo lady.

That would be cool.
In a recent article it was explained that Baz keeps the gun due to an insecurity he has of the ring. Baz feels the ring could stop working at anytime, consequently he choses to keep a gun as a failsafe. Dont know how that gun will hold up against aliens but I suppose its more of a character development tool.why he need a gun

From Japan! Take away the Asian Kung Fu hero stereotype.

Sounds to me like an Abin Sur waiting to happen.
Anyways i'm always happen to see more diverse heroesin the DCU and i'm interested to see where his story goes.
I'm Middle Eastern, I'm also American, so before anyone goes and calls me a racist. I think Baz is dumb and seems to be pandering.
He seems cool. The "secret" interrogation room part put my stomach in knots. But I am just tired of all the duplicate characters. Theres already a bunch of main GL characters, Why keep adding more? I just hope Hal comes back and the GL title book keeps the focus on Hal and Sinestro.
I have no strong feelings for him one way or another just yet. I'd prefer one of the alien Green Lanterns to gain more prominence, or at least have a human woman become a Green Lantern instead. And as an American, I would actually prefer a non-American.
With that said, though, I'm willing to give him a chance. Like I said, I'm mostly neutral about him.
I like him. I'm not sure why exactly. He just sort've works especially with what all is going on with the GL books right now.
The only thing I didn't like was that he was an american. I mean 5 Earth lanterns?!?!?! Ok, that's a bit excessive, but I can deal, but they are all from america?? Just seems a bit screwy no?
@SoA: That would be awesome! They should explore that. Wish we worked at DC instead of whoever is the main GL editor. We would kick so much trash!
I like how DC has gotten more diverse especially now the black doesn't really do for diversity anymore am glad were past that , can wait to see what race they spring out as a gimmick ,

A cool cover would be him tossing the gun to the side when he finally fully embraces his ring
That would be cool.
One of the few interesting earth based GLs to me. Perhaps this is what it'll take to get me into the group. While i've always enjoyed cosmic stuff with The Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Red Lanterns , I've always found the GLs to be boring due to their focus on to me at least boring humans. I read GL #0 and I enjoyed it enough to keep reading ,so hopefully he can remain as interesting as he was in his first appearance.
@TheCrowbar: Honestly, I have to agree. I have hope that the writing on him will actually go somewhere, but all I see right now is a token. I will follow him and give it a chance though.
We don't need more Earth Lanterns.
We already have two unpopular Lanterns from Earth (Stewart and Gardner).
The Green Lantern Corps. is not the Earth UN that we need someone from each demographic in it.
It's just another excuse to put some more forced over representation into our comics.
And as DC tries to make their comics more ethnic and minority-friendly, Amanda Waller had to lose weight and straighten her hair. I'm missing something here.

im kinda iffy on the fact that because he is a minority he has to have a record but otherwise i like to see where his story goes
John Stewart wasn't a criminal.

I agree.
I'm probably most interested in seeing the character that would be chosen by a mix of Sinestro and Hal's rings. Him being a human and his race come after that for me.
Well as most say, he has potential. For the ones that disagree and dislike the character, can you explain why?
I'm kinda from Midlle East, so I automatically like him,but Baz seems angry all the time in the #0.
And how ironic is it that an Arab steals a van that has a bomb in it. Kinda Stupid.
I agree we don't need another GL from Earth, but why is DC( or Marvel) trying to expand and diversIfy their fans a bad thing? We don't need more Earth Lanterns.

Also what exactly is " forced over representation " ?
You all have great points I really would Prefer an alien lantern gaining more prominence because the lanterns are from space so it only makes sense. Plus I am surprised a female green lantern human has not been appointed and instead we get another ethnicity why not do both they could have had a female Arab-American. I like Baz though so in no way am I hating on the character his outfit is awesome and he has interesting origins. Still my favorite new green lantern would be a new male alien who spends most of their time in the main green lantern book.
So far Im not a big fan of the guy his costume with the mask and gun makes him look a bank robber, the guys green lanterns try to catch. Hes steals cars and inlvolve in illegal street racing. Really he carrys a gun cause hes scared of the lantern ring? yeah that sounds like he has courage and willpower
Never read him so I can't hate him. I do think we have too many earth GL's though. If they really wanted to replace Hal, they should have used John and made Baz a blue lantern or something. And he shouldn't be American, we have too many American lanterns.

You know, I live in a town with only 1 muslim family, (I think), yet I have never encountered people harassing them. Course, I live in New England, unlike some uncivilized, racist red area.

Yeah, I've never seen anyone make fun of someone for being Muslim. When I was younger, there were a few people who made fun of the only Jewish kid in my school (who was also ginger, which didn't help him when the kids started to watch South Park), but not any other religion.
I really WANT to like him, but I've found a lot of the writing unbearable...as soon as it seems like the character's finally found his footing/voice, BAM. POORLY DONE JUSTICE LEAGUE BATTLE. >sigh<
At the moment I'm honestly finding his sister a lot more likable, why couldn't she have been the GL? That would have been great, she still would be Arabic, there wouldn't have been the dumb car-thief junk, and there are almost no prominent female GLs.
And I hate Baz's mask. >_<
i like his character and how he outsmarted the justice league but again there are way too many earth lanterns even tho he'll be in the new JLA comic i just dont see how itll work but maybe DC has something up their sleeve

What JL battle ? he ran away, which was the smart thing to do since he just got the ring and can't use it proprely. BAZ would have been trashed in a matter of seconds...
He used constructs very fast, which is a difficult feat if I remembrer correctly (it takes proper training on OA to do proper constructs). and he managed to get away from the League, which isn't something a lot of people can do...
I like the way he is handled : he isn't a punk/idiot who got a ring by mistake. I begin to see why he was chosen.
However the pacing is a bit slow. I understand why introducing a new character takes time. But introducing a new character now, during the build uof a big event was probably a mistake
PS : honestly, I wouldn't be surpised if Muslim got persecuted after 9/11... it is not because you didn't persecuted them (since you have a brain and are not a douchebag) that there isn't any redneck who did it
