Surfer is too versatile. That doesn't mean however, that they can't give him a good fight.

Beta Ray Bill lost to Silver Surfer when they fought (in Bill's own series, mind you), and Thor is around the same level as Bill. Silver Surfer isn't overrated; he's just finally getting the respect he deserves.

PS: Wrong board. Probably belongs in General Discussion or Silver Surfer board.

Great question. I can tell you that when Thor was first created, he was supposed to be Marvel's be all, end all of of super powerful superheros. In my opinion, he created Thor as Marvel's definitive answer to Superman. In their first meeting (Silver Surfer #4), these two powerhouses first tangoed. Amped by Loki's magic, the Surfer confronted Thor, as he was manipulated by Loki to do. Although there was no clear winner in that match, fans generally agree that was a win for Thor. The two met again in Silver Surfer #86 and this time, amped by unrelenting fury, that fight is generally ruled a win for Thor. However, during the Annihilation event in '05, the Surfer was amped by Galactus to greater levels of power, easily destroying a planet with one blast of the power cosmic, quickly defeating Ravenous, who previously stalemated the Surfer and prompting Ravenous to rhetorically remark, "What are you?" A few years later, Beta Ray Bill met up with the Surfer, who effortlessly defeated Beta Ray Bill bare knuckle style in only a few (three??) blows.

It's a very difficult question. One comic web site indicates the Surfer as a clear winner over Thor because of his level of power coupled with his FTL (faster than light reflexes) reflexes. Another website indicates that between Thor's level of strength, magical prowess (on occasion demonstrated surpass Dr Strange himself) and other powers make Thor the most powerful superhero of all time.

Although I'm a huge Silver Surfer fan, Thor is my second favorite superhero. Nevertheless, Thor written to his potential should be able to beat the Surfer. Just my opinion. With regard to Beta Ray Bill and Thor, the two have fought three times that I'm aware of, the first one went to Beta Ray Bill, the last two went to Beta Ray Bill.

In all the times they fought in the comics Thor has won. On comicvine you have to look at the power sets and theorize a power level. The theoretical powerlevel is the using of the characters max abilities to make an opinion toward the particular battle.

Any character can beat any character. So those characters you mentioned can, and in fact have, beat the one known as the Silver Surfer. Of could question becomes much more complicated when you introduce who should, could, probability and determine other variables. As far as overrating and underrating, well its really just human nature to find where ever you have someone overrating something you usually find others in the vicinity underrating that same thing. Most people suck at maintaining objectivity and so react of other people's opinions to determine their own. Of course even if they don't do that, people when talking about comics are notoriously bias, if not just lacking in critical thinking. My favorite is taking characters dialogue and citing it as objective fact, or some strange conscious decision to think characters only refer to power and strength levels when talking to each other. Oh, and not actually reading comics?

Just reading scans? Like I came to this site and almost every thread pertaining to Thor and Silver Surfer referenced Blood and Thunder explaining how Thor has Warriors Madness when that was just what one character's hypothesis and later disproved, more thoroughly, except dozens and dozens of posters on this site and others seem to have missed that. There are lots of other reasons, incidents, gaps in logic, that could cause mind implosions. The most hilarious probably being when people try and assert some sort of single definition answer.

..Thor has historically done well v Surfer. His power set just happens to be a good counter for the power cosmic. In their first encounter Surfer pretty much admitted it....Surfer generally beats Hulk because he drains the gamma energy out of Hulk and turns him back to Banner, equally Thor can beat Surfer. Its just one particular character's powers being effective against another's.

Because what writer's want to feed us....

And then there is how a proposed battle would actually go down given the character's set of power.

The Surfer and Thor are probably very similar in terms of overall power set. Durability is probably and edge for Surfer, raw strength to Thor.

But the Surfer is much, much faster than Thor. He wouldn't be able to react before Surfer decimates him with multiple planet busting shots. Or BFR's him time.

@captnmcdeadpool: Thor (as everyone says) has at least microsecond reaction, how many planet busting shots do you expect Surfer to be shooting at him then?

Thor (as everyone says) has at least microsecond reaction,

I'm glad you recognize this. Most around here say Thor has no reaction time to speak of.

how many planet busting shots do you expect Surfer to be shooting at him then?

If we consider the fight in light of the battle forum rules? Until the job is done.

Now...if you want to consider in the light of what a comic book writer would do?

*flips coin*

Your guess is as good as mine.

@captnmcdeadpool: but seriously, surfer may be able to produce a planet busting shot but you can't expect him to have one charged up fully every less than a second or so.

The problem with Silver Surfer has always been that he has such an immense power set that could wipe out 98% of the MCU if they really pissed him off. As a result, more than any other character in the MCU, he seems to "forget" his powers and that's how you see characters like Thor and Black Panther beating him. When we look at his powerset, he should beat characters like Beta Ray Bill or Thor but in the comics, for the sake of the narrative, he will lose those fights.
