Point Blank and Payback are nothing on this.
Donald E. Westlake, or for fans of the "Parker" crime novels, Richard Stark was a great crime writer and one of the most celebrated at that. Parker is one of the most iconic fictional criminals and in both The movie Payback (1999) and Point Blank (1967) the main character was never allowed to use the name "Parker". The stories were based on them, but not truly Parker stories.
Darwyn Cooke did what no one else could do and no one else will do. With the passing of Donald E. Westlake on
December 31, 2008, Darwyn Cooke was the only writer ever given permission to use the well protected name "Parker". When Richard Stark read the script he knew Darwyn would be true to the character. So now Parker lives on once more in comic Form.
This first volume is based on The Hunter. A story of betrayal and getting "Payback". Darwyn Cooke is known mostly for his work at DC. This is a nice change. He is respectful to the medium and does each panel artistically. There is no need to gratuitous violence and sex for him to tell a good story.
This Graphic novel is fairly true to the book, some scenes, Darwyn does his way because of the tastefulness of the scene. The scene I think of must is when Parker has to Mutilate his dead wife so she can't be ID'ed. Very well done, no need to truly show such violence.
I enjoyed the color choices, not full color, this story keeps its Noir feel.
I cannot wait for the next book. With four books contracted and this one in the bag, I have high hopes for this series.
5/5
Cheers!
