Daredevil: Dark Nights #1 - Angels Unaware Part One: Whiteout Review

5

A blizzard cripples New York and the fate of a child is in Daredevil's hands.

The Good

Lee Weeks' brand new limited-series staring the Man Without Fear steps out of the traditional superhero ring. You won't see Daredevil flipping across the rooftops as he battles the latest themed villain. You won't see someone like Stilt-Man screaming, "You haven't seen the last of me!" as he waddles off into the distance. Instead, it's far more grounded, dives super deep into Murdock's head, and puts a bright light on the every day people who are often overlooked as the heroes swing past them. And you know what? It's glorious.

Weeks is presenting a truly captivating and emotional down to Earth tale surrounding Daredevil. The pacing and use of captions is brilliant, keeping a tight grip on my focus the entire time. Weeks jumps between stories as he into devotes our affection to ordinary people Daredevil will encounter and does it extraordinarily well. There's an overwhelming sensation that the hero will save the day, but when it comes to a tale like this, you simply don't know when he could indeed fail and the consequences will be dire. It's that sense of uncertainty and realism which helps this issue stand out from the crowd.

Weeks also full immerses us in Daredevil's mind, painting the picture for everything the man with superhuman senses is experiencing. The writer goes into great detail helping us see what a difficult day in the life of Murdock is like, even when it's something as simple as laying down in a hospital bed and being overwhelming by the conversations taking place throughout the building.

Also helping this series stand out: the ridiculously good visuals by Weeks and colorist Lee Loughridge. The panels of an injured Daredevil laying in the snow or a blizzard covered New York is dark yet disturbingly gorgeous and detailed. But it's not just scenery where the art excels -- the duo delivers big time on the few moments of action. There's a great sense of motion behind the combat and they pack one helluva punch when they do manage to connect. Simply put, it's a stellar looking issue.

The Bad

Considering Daredevil's crazy history of encounters with superhuman foes and withstanding hits from characters who can lift multiple tons, it's a tad difficult to believe he'd be in such terrible condition after that strike. I imagine that's something certain fans won't be able to overlook and if so, it'll ruin the experience for them. But if you can appreciate the fact this is a much more grounded approach, I think you'll soak it in and be just fine with the development.

The Verdict

This issue was an unexpected delight for me. I had no idea what to expect going into Murdock's latest limited-series, but after reading it I can only describe it as beautiful, engrossing, and heartfelt. I already can't wait to get my hands on the second chapter. This more "realistic" approach may not be for everyone, but I highly recommend it for everyone else. Do yourself a favor and give this issue an honest chance.

Now this is a proper Daredevil story, at least we have End of Days and Dark Nights to get are fill of the real DD until Waid is done with the ongoing.

:( I really like Mark Waid's Daredevil and I really do think its a great and logical change for DD. Anyways, I loved this issue and I cannot wait for #2. Its a great tail and great art. I felt like I was looking at a comic from the 80s and 90s and that is not a bad thing here. Just a great story being woven here.

I was thinking about checking this out. I need an introduction to the character, maybe this could be it

First, I didn't read this review because i dont want it to spoil anything. This book looks interesting but i dont know if i should pick it up because i didn't read End of Days. Is this connected to End of Days or is it a separate story that i can read without reading End of Days?

So glad I picked this up over Action Comics! Can't wait to read it!

I was torn over whether or not to get this. It was a light week but I'm trying to cut down on minis. Either way it was a really good looking book.

I agree. I'm a Waid fan, but with what he's doing with MY Daredevil. People love that crap tho. End of Days was awsome. Looking forward to reading this.

Hell Yeah it is.It was much more better than the snow storm issue Waid did as well

Why was that guy in the hospital asking his co-worker out to a Knicks-Celtics game? Dont they know the NBA season ended for the those two teams weeks ago? He should have asked her to a Yankees-Red Sox game instead. Would have made more sense.

If Waid had a story where Daredevil got knocked out so easily whilst leaving his identity in a locked briefcase, you'd want him crucified. Stop being contrarian for the sake of it. You and your boy above me literally just hate on Waid's run for the absolute sake. I've NEVER seen a legit criticism from either of you. At least 211 actually buys the comic still. He has the right to complain, nonsensical as it is, because he's paying. He could just stop paying, stop reading and stop complaining, but at least he's paying.

If Waid committed some of the nonsensical garbage in this issue, you'd be all over him.

@jamdamage: YOUR Daredevil? Waid has contributed more to the character than you ever have. He is more Waid's than he is any of ours.

Report me to a mod for what? Replying to your comment? I'm doing so publicly. I'm not privately insulting nor harrassing you.

I'm replying to you civilly and on topic. There's nothing you can threaten me with. If you don't wanna talk, ignore me. You don't have to reply, but you cannot stop me from posting what I want. I'm not following you around the site or whatever. You can't report me just because you dislike what I'm saying. You were happy to go back and forth with me before until the argument got too tricky for you to justify. Mods aren't there to save you in debates, dude.

No review of the last issue of End of Days? I was all set to discuss that ending!

Awesome issue. Can't wait for the next one. Even though Daredevil doesn't get much recognition, at least they always have stellar teams to write him great stories. One of my favorite pictures of Daredevil ever is actually the last page of this issue. I actually took a picture and made it my phone background. Matt had an amazing week with this and the conclusion to End of Days.

I wasn't impressed with this one. The narration seemed fractured and repetitive, and nothing really happened. I do enjoy the art though.

@jonny_anonymous: Meh, Daredevil deserved to have a less dark series after all the terrible events he went through. Daredevil can't just be in the same old noir stories all the time. Waid's DD is great

Well said man, Waid has done a fantastic continuing series. I am a very big fan of his work and I believe he's done DD proud!

The problem with Waid haters is that they are like insecure religious folk. They wanna convert everyone so they force themselves and their Waid hate into every single Daredevil thread or post.

They're not comfortable enough just ignoring the series and not reading it. They have to keep shouting it and telling others not to read it, too.

Thanks, I see it now.

Now I want a review of Age of Ultron 9 so I can complain about that motherfu@#**&^*&^!!!!!!!! :)

This issue was amazing. I am simply overjoyed with how well End Of Days turned out and that just as soon as it ended we have another mini-series starting right up. And while, like I said, this issue was really great, it's going to be awesome getting three separate Daredevil stories featured in this series in the next 8 months. Can't wait to see Lapham's return to Daredevil since his Daredevil vs Punisher: Means and Ends story!

I have to be honest here, some of these purist Daredevil fans here have an extremely annoying elitist attitude, and need to get off of their damn high horses. Why is a different take on daredevil considered to be "bad". It could be just as good or better quality wise, but simply be following a different formula.

Also STOP with the whole "they made this like every other marvel book". You're definitely over exaggerating. I have read every single issue in this series, and there is still a slight dark tone to it. Its just not COMPLETELY dark and emo as some of you would prefer. One would think real DD fans would be happy about how good the storytelling has been. But nooo, not these guys.

These issues have received critical scores that DD hasn't been receiving in years. You would think real DD fans would be happy about that. Some of you would rather have it tell HORRIBLE stories and get bad reviews as long as it stays dark and dreary, rather than what we're seeing right now with waid. Yet you call yourselves real DD fans. Please, spare me.

Someone said it earlier, I don't remember who. But I definitely agree. There's an elitist stench on comicvine and i'm seeing it here in this thread.

Sorry for the rant, but i've been standing by watching the same people comment on DD articles and reviews simply to express their displeasure with waid over his entire run. And it has gotten extremely annoying.

This was a great issue along with DD End of Days. But I must say Waids DD is also great. Haters gonna hate. Its a great time to be a DD fan.

Totally overlooked this at my comic shop. I didn't know Lee Weeks was on this title! :-(

I would've picked it up. Too bad. Then again, I might trade-wait. It'd look nice as a hardcover on my bookshelf instead of buried in a long-box.

@novi_homines: The only sad remark I have on Waids run is mentioned below.

I agree with j_a, although the current DD main book is good (minus the reveal in the last issue). So far, after only the first issue, this looks like a great "starting" point for DD speculators. I.M.O.

I enjoyed this story and can't wait for the rest.
