Top Ten Villains I would Have Preferred to be in the Man of Steel

With Zod having been revealed as the villain in the new Superman movie, I kinda of yawned and ask why retread the same old ground again and again. Don't get me wrong, I have high hopes for the actor portraying Zod, he was great in Boardwalk Empire. But here're some villains I would've rather seen make it:

1. Brainiac

2. Darkseid

3. Parasite

4. Bizarro
5. Toyman

6. Mr.Myxlplyx

7. Mongul

8. Doomsday

9. Metallo

10. Battle suit/Evil businessman Lex Luthor

How about you fellow Comic Viners? Who would you have rather seen make the cut?

10. Battle suit/Evil businessman Lex Luthor: Lex Luthor... in a Superman movie...and you're talking about retreading the same old groound?

We have seen wacky or mad scientist Lex Luthor. We've never seen him with the power and influence his businessman personae brings, such as in Superman: The Animted Series. He could ave a hand in creating one of the villains I mentioned, such as Metallo or Parasite. Nor have we ever seen Lex able go toe to toe with the Man of Steel. I think these are all notable changes that would qualify Lex Luthor for another chance at the big screen, while keeping it interesting and at least a tad familier for audience members, at least as far as familier characters go (somene speculated they used Zod so audience members would recognize the villain).

I think it's pretty much inevitable that Luthor will show up for the sequel (just like the Joker showed up in TDK). However Braniac should definitely be the villain for the third film, that guy is long overdue for a movie appearance.

@Black_Claw: I don't know....Lex Luthor should be benched or at least not put as the main villain. Its only acceptable if Metallo, Parasite or Bizarro are the main villain.

Lex Luthor? No. Hes been used too many times in the superman films. With man of steel we get to see a more darker General Zod like the Zod from Smallville, the Zod in superman 2 was too comical and cant be taken seriously. And at last they got the female associate of Zod right Faora... not Ursa, Ursa is a crap rip off of Faora, a very bad character. Since Zod is in the movie, i suppose they focus on the more kryptonian nature of the supes rather than the overused human nature.

I never understood why people always say they want Brainiac, but complain about a lack of action in Superman movies. Unless it is Gary Frank's Brainiac, he has no action cred to really speak of and it would be more of a battle of wits anyway. Even Gary Frank's Brainiac who totally outclassed Supes physically spent the majority of the arc PLUGGED INTO HIS SHIP IN A COCOON I love Brainiac, but he seems to be the opposite of what the Superman Returns haters were looking for.

Zod and/or Brainiac do work in the sense they both have ties to Krypton, so just by introducing them you can cover a lot of exposition for Superman's own origin, which is obviously important in a pseudo reboot.

Personally, if I was doing the movies, i would have thought in terms of a trilogy.

  • First Movie: Id glaze over Supermans origin which is familiar to everyone at this point, id use either Bizarro + Lex or my personal favorite choice Metallo + Lex. Now you can introduce Lex, and show him being maniacal and ominous, while still giving Superman an epic brawl.
  • Second Movie: Doomsday, I think I may put someone behind him as well, pulling the strings. Maybe Brainiac could be here, and the origin could be adjusted so that Brainiac found out about DD (who was a Kryptonian experiment) when stealing Kandor, and unleashed him on Superman when his plot to bottle Metropolis initially fails?
  • Darkseid, this could even lead into a JLA extravaganza when Superman wins a Pyrrhic, and temporary victory.

Brainiac is basically the most popular choice...in all the sites I seen...

Hopefully WB won't be stupid again and will put Brainiac as the villain for the sequel..if there is any..which most likely there will be.

@tomofukuoka: irrelevant to the topic, but I agree. Well, kinda. Snyder did a good job, it was Goyer's screenplay that ruined the movie.

I think brainiac should be saved for JL so that MOS/BvS could have Metallo and Lex Luthor

I'm not here to discuss the contents of the movie (even if it was flipping awesome), so I won't respond to the fans' criticisms, but to the post.

I initially agreed with many that Zod is a bit of a tiresome villain due to the fact that we have already seen him in live-action. But given the story of the film, it pretty much makes sense. It is an origin story for Superman and Zod, being Kryptonian like Superman, is tied to his origin. They wanted to get his heritage and the villains most synonymous with his heritage out of the way before focusing on, possibly, Metallo, Parasite, and maybe even Brainiac.

I also don't know why people are complaining about the "Kneel Before Zod" line not being included. That started with the Reeve movies, NOT the comics. Man of Steel is its own bag.
