You have to be willing to branch out if you want to read the best books.

When I first got into comics, my comics were Firestorm, Mr. Miracle, Spider-Man, and Transformers.

I got into Dark Horse comics with Aliens vs Predator, and jumped in with both feet into Ultraverse. (Had 2 on order of each for the first few months, and wound up in the end not paying for comics as local shops really underestimated demand.)

I like comics from all companies. Still need to get into IDW though. They did a Beast Wars comic that I must have.

The last time I can remember doing that was when I started with Valiant last year.

I'll read anything as long as it's good. Sure I like DC characters more since I grew up with them (well maybe not since the New 52) so I'll try and make it through their comics despite crappy writing. But good writing can make almost any character interesting and compelling (e.g. Walking Dead, Invincible, Tank Girl, Maus, Bone, etc).

@darthaznable: IDW's got a bunch of great comics, including Locke and Key by Joe Hill and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which I keep hearing so many good things about. I've just read the original Mirage version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and it's pretty good!

Yep..found some great stuff branching out. Also found some terrible stuff branching away from the Big 2..but that's what nice about comics. When i found out I liked X-O Manowar, I kept buying it. When I found out I disliked "Harbinger" and "Mind the Gap"..I stopped. So, one has very little to lose by branching out..just a few dollars here and there.

If that. Some libraries carry comics, and there are legally free comics online: some first issues on comixology, some creators put their works for free, Golden Age comics and etc.

If someone were to only read dc or marvel they would be cheating themselves out of some real amazing stories.

I mainly stick to Marvel and Image because that's what I grew up with. I don't follow DC too much anymore because every time I find something I like, it gets canceled (except Green Arrow, which is awesome btw). My pull list is dominated by Marvel and Image but I'm also picking up at least one title from every major indy publisher (IDW, Valiant, Oni, Dark Horse, etc). In the end, as long as its a good read and you enjoy it, you should buy it regardless of the publisher.

I'm strictly a DC guy because I've never been interested in the other companies( not including marvel). What are some good companies and what are their best comics?

Well, I own only 2 Marvel books at this point, the other 30+ books are from DC. However, I find that I don't go in search of new characters to read but rather find it by accident. Maybe they served a supporting role in a different book that made me want to know more. I'm a really picky reader.
